A dessert that tastes like Jeju

Every time I finish a trip, I buy a gift to bring home, and this time I picked a dol hareubang (stone grandfather statue)-shaped dessert that really captures the feel of Jeju. It's the Harubangne 8-flavor gift set from Today Jeju, inside the Jeju Shilla Duty Free shop — the cute shapes and range of flavors made it perfect as a gift. How to get to Today Jeju

Today Jeju sits on the 1st floor of the Jeju Shilla Duty Free building, right next to Mochiron. It's 13 minutes by car from Jeju International Airport, and walkable from city hotels including the Grand Hyatt, so it was easy to stop by on the last day of the trip. Even though it's inside the duty-free building, it's actually a non-duty-free shop, so Korean residents can buy here too — a Jeju dessert shop anyone can drop into comfortably.

Inside the small, tidy Today Jeju shop

Walking in, the whole shop was decorated in orange. In the center display, the hareubang-shaped desserts were arranged among volcanic rock and moss, with the order and pickup counter tucked in the back. With dol hareubang figures and a tangerine tree added in, the space really leaned into Jeju's atmosphere, and it was fun just to look around.

On the shelves inside, the hareubang-shaped madeleines were lined up by color. Yellow hallabong, purple cactus fruit, green matcha, brown chocolate — all the different-colored hareubang standing side by side made for a bright display. Since they're molded directly from the dol hareubang statue, it felt like a Jeju souvenir you could only get here.

In the middle of the shop, desserts were displayed in gold baskets. Tangerine tree and dol hareubang figures placed here and there made it feel almost like a little exhibit, and with each flavor sorted separately, it was easy to pick out just the ones you wanted.

A three-tier gold basket held the Harubangne sorted by flavor, each individually wrapped with a name tag, so it was fun checking each flavor while picking out what to buy.

Which Harubangne gift sets can you choose?

Today Jeju's gift sets were displayed by composition. The 4-flavor set gathered the most popular flavors — carrot, cactus fruit, matcha and hallabong — and had a 'best' label, so you could tell it's the one people pick most often as a gift. A set looked cleaner and neater to gift than loose pieces.

What we chose was the Harubangne 8-flavor gift set, with all eight flavors included. Chocolate, cactus fruit, matcha, Earl Grey, carrot, black sesame, fig and hallabong — eight flavors in one box, fun to pick through. Being able to taste several flavors at once, plus the neat packaging, made it a perfect Jeju souvenir gift.

There was also a Harubangne chocolate set with a chocolate coating. Matcha, cactus fruit, Earl Grey and chocolate flavors are coated so you can enjoy them as smooth chocolate desserts.

There was also an 8-flavor half-and-half set, mixing chocolate-coated and plain madeleines. The top tier held chocolate-coated Harubangne, and the bottom held the plain baked ones, letting you enjoy both at once. Whoever receives it as a gift can pick whichever style they prefer.

Angbutter and Harubang Sand were also on display. Angbutter has sweet red bean and butter inside, and the Harubang Sand comes in two flavors — Udo peanut and tangerine. Even within the same hareubang family, there's enough variety to make picking fun as a Jeju gift.

Individual pieces were also wrapped separately, so you could buy just the flavor you wanted — handy if a full set feels like too much. Each flavor had its own price tag, making it easy to pick exactly what you needed.

From yellow hallabong to green matcha to pink cactus fruit, each flavor had its own color, and seeing them all together was bright and appetizing. Adding the Harubang Sand made it look like a little gathering of tiny hareubang — just looking at it felt like Jeju.

Today Jeju merch: postcards, keyrings and t-shirts

While waiting for our order to be wrapped, I looked around the shop and found Today Jeju merchandise on a shelf along one wall. Postcards, keyrings and stickers decorated with the brand logo made for fun browsing alongside buying dessert. It was nice that there was more to look at than just food — items worth keeping too.

On the wall beside the register, t-shirts and tote bags were hanging, in sizes for both adults and kids — the kind of thing worth buying as a travel keepsake. A dessert shop that also carries merch made it easy to pick out all your souvenirs in one place.

Packaging and how to store the madeleines

The gift set came in an orange shopping bag printed with the brand character, so it looked fresh right from the outside and was easy to hand over as a gift just as it was. Even the bag matched the brand's look, showing care put into the packaging.

Inside was an orange gift box stamped with the Today Jeju logo. The dol hareubang logo gave it a strong local feel, and the clean exterior made it perfect for gifting.

Inside the box, storage instructions and ingredients were printed in detail. Since the product has no preservatives or additives, it noted the madeleines keep for 5 days at room temperature and up to 1 month frozen — good to know for bringing them home as a souvenir. It felt reassuring that they're made without additives, and I liked that the storage info was so clearly explained.

The Harubangne 8-flavor madeleine set

Inside the box, eight Harubangne were arranged in two rows. Each was individually wrapped, making it easy to pull one out at a time and to share with others.

A leaflet introducing the product was tucked inside the box as well. It explained that good ingredients come first, and described how hallabong, matcha, carrot and cactus fruit are all local ingredients. It also noted that part of the proceeds go to support a children's welfare center, which made the whole thing feel even warmer.

Matcha Harubangne

First I took out the green matcha Harubangne. Made with 100% Jeju matcha and chlorella, the color was deep and rich, and the dol hareubang shape was so well preserved it almost felt like a shame to eat it. One bite in, the matcha's distinct aroma spread gently, and it wasn't too sweet, so it was easy to eat without feeling heavy.

Turning it to the side, even the hareubang's hat and facial expression were stamped in fine detail. The surface had puffed up nicely, keeping the madeleine's texture intact, and the matcha's slight bitterness balanced well with a gentle sweetness. From color to aroma, the matcha came through fully — you could feel the care put into a single dessert.

Black sesame Harubangne

The black sesame Harubangne had black sesame seeds dotted through a yellow batter, giving it a nutty aroma, and domestic black sesame gave it a deeper flavor with each bite. The nuttiness of the black sesame paired with the soft madeleine made this a flavor adults especially seemed to love.

Splitting it in half, the black sesame seeds were packed densely inside. Just from the cross-section, you could tell the ingredients weren't skimped on — an easy-to-eat Jeju dessert.

The free tangerine Harubang Sand

I also tried the tangerine-flavor Harubang Sand that came free with the 8-flavor set — marshmallow cream, tangerine jam and tangerine chips sandwiched between yellow cookies gave a tangy-sweet flavor that spread through the mouth. The crisp cookie, soft cream and bright tangerine came together for a texture completely different from the madeleines.

Shaped like dol hareubang and made with local ingredients like hallabong, matcha, black sesame and Gujwa carrots, these preservative-free madeleines weren't too sweet, making them easy for both adults and kids to enjoy — and with their cute shapes and range of flavors, they made a great gift to bring home.
