Jongno 5-ga bakery: 6-flavor discount tasting set, Ssuk's Choco Pie

In short

Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul is a chilled fresh-cream dessert bakery on Jongno 32-gil, beside Gwangjang Market near Jongno 5-ga Station in Seoul. Visiting alone, the writer bought the 6-piece gift set at the discounted price of 24,800 won and cut one of each open to compare: mugwort with whole red bean, Geomundo sea-breeze mugwort, mugwort injeolmi (chewy rice cake), Udo peanut, Nonsan strawberry and Gwangju real chocolate. Geomundo sea-breeze mugwort was the best of the basics, while injeolmi and Udo peanut were the personal favorites.

Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul (쑥스초코파이 서울, also styled 'Sooks') is a chilled fresh-cream dessert bakery on Jongno 32-gil, right next to Gwangjang Market and an easy walk from Jongno 5-ga Station. This time I had a good chance to go on my own and take my time — I'd been seeing this place on social media forever and wanted to check it out, so when a sponsorship opportunity came up I went straight away haha

Hello! (´ᴗ`)♡ This time I made it to Ssuk's Choco Pie (Sooks) at Gwangjang Market near Jongno 5-ga!!

If you're looking for good eats near Jongno 5-ga or desserts at Gwangjang Market, write this one down right now 📝 This is the place that first made mugwort choco pie in Korea — a bakery specializing in chilled fresh-cream desserts.

What's on the shelves at Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul?

The display case at Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul had a whole range: choco pies, scones, cookies, cheesecake, even milk tea. Each item had a detailed sign explaining its flavor and aroma, which made picking one out genuinely fun.

6-piece gift set price and the free tasting

The 6-piece gift set is normally ₩28,800 but was on discount at ₩24,800, and the 3-piece set was also marked down from ₩14,400 to ₩13,400. There was a sign saying free tasting was available too, so it felt like a no-pressure environment to browse and pick flavors.

What I bought today was the 6-piece gift set!

  • 🍫 Mugwort with whole red bean
  • 🌿 Geomundo sea-breeze mugwort
  • 🍡 Mugwort injeolmi (sweet rice cake)
  • 🥜 Udo peanut
  • 🍓 Nonsan strawberry
  • 🍫 Gwangju real chocolate

So I picked out these 6 flavors.

The packaging looked so nice — it really seemed perfect for a dessert gift.

Sign explaining the Ssuk's Choco Pie brand story

The story behind Korea's first mugwort choco pie

Ssuk's Choco Pie apparently first opened in 2016, and hearing that they hold a patent as the first place in Korea to make mugwort choco pie made me trust the brand even more. I also liked that they follow a healthy '5-no' policy — no artificial coloring, no preservatives, no emulsifiers, no shortening, no margarine. It was impressive to learn that, unlike regular room-temperature choco pies, these are developed as chilled fresh choco pies, cutting down on sugar while keeping the natural fresh taste of the cream.

To keep the pies from getting damaged, they were wrapped individually in plastic and then packed in a nice box — even on the trip home, none of the pies were broken or dented, everything stayed neat and intact.

Tasting all 6 flavors solo: my pick is Geomundo sea-breeze mugwort

Back home, I had a lot of fun cutting each of the 6 Ssuk's Choco Pie flavors in half and tasting them one by one, all on my own, comparing as I went haha

This is good enough to deserve the 'first in Korea' title.

— that's honestly how polished it felt.

Several choco pie flavors arranged on a plate

My pick out of all of them was the Geomundo sea-breeze mugwort!! Apparently it's the most basic flavor of the mugwort choco pie line — the outside is coated in dark chocolate, and the inner sheet was a pale green with a subtle mugwort aroma coming through. Maybe because it's chilled fresh cream, the cream felt much lighter and fresher, which paired really well with that distinctive mugwort flavor.

Is Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul worth a stop at Gwangjang Market?

  • ☑️ Highly recommend it if you're near Jongno 5-ga or Gwangjang Market and want a distinctive mugwort dessert
  • ☑️ It really lived up to the 'first mugwort choco pie in Korea' title, and following the 5-no policy — no coloring, no preservatives, no emulsifiers, no shortening, no margarine — made it feel trustworthy
  • ☑️ Since it's made with chilled fresh cream rather than kept at room temperature, the cream felt lighter and fresher, and I kept reaching for more
  • ☑️ The 3-piece and 6-piece set options make it easy to pick something for a gift without overthinking it, and getting the discounted price on-site made it good value too
  • ☑️ All 6 flavors were solidly good, but the mugwort injeolmi and Udo peanut were my personal favorites — injeolmi for its chewy texture, and peanut for its double-layered nutty flavor
  • ☑️ Quality good enough for a holiday gift or a present for friends — next time I want to buy several boxes just for gifting

Next time I want to try the mugwort milk tea and mugwort cheesecake too. Highly recommend! I'd 200% come back (⁎˃ᆺ˂)
