When I wanted a hearty meal in Masan with plenty of rice and side dishes, I went looking and ended up at Masan Ssamjangjip on Daetgeori.

These days a single meal isn't cheap, but here the ssambap (lettuce-wrap rice) set is 14,900 won per person, which felt like relatively little pressure, and the table came out completely full — very satisfying.

Especially with all the side dishes plus wrap vegetables to go with them, I think this would work well for anyone who generally likes Korean food.

What I ordered was the ssambap set. Looking at the menu board, the ssambap set was 14,900 won, and add-ons included grilled mackerel at 5,000 won and stir-fried pork at 7,000 won; braised beef ribs (whole or single portion), rice, and stir-fried japchae could also be ordered separately. A neatly arranged ssambap table

The first thing that caught my eye when the food came out was just how many kinds of side dishes there were! Unlike a typical restaurant that gives you just one or two sides, here several banchan (side dishes) were each neatly plated on their own, making the whole spread look really generous.

Small dishes of side dishes on the table

There were all kinds of sides that go well with rice — seasoned greens, pickled vegetables, kimchi, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), soy-braised eggs, and more.

Soy-braised eggs and other rice side dishes

Being able to taste a little of many different sides made it fun to pick and choose while working through a bowl of rice.

Stir-fried pork with wrap vegetables

You can't have a ssambap set without stir-fried pork. The seasoning had soaked in well, and it was perfect with rice. And with fresh wrap vegetables on the side, I found myself piling on a piece of pork, a spoonful of rice, and some ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) to make one big wrap.

Personally, I think ssambap tastes best with this combo: meat + rice + wrap vegetable + ssamjang.

A savory doenjang jjigae on the side

Tofu doenjang jjigae served in a stone pot

It came out piping hot in a stone pot, so it stayed warm throughout the meal. With tofu and vegetables inside, it was great for taking a spoonful of broth between bites of the seasoned dishes like the stir-fried pork.

Self-serve dessert corner seen after the meal

There's even a self-serve dessert corner

An interesting spot I found after finishing my meal — a self-serve dessert corner set up in one section.

Rice cakes, fruit, and other simple palate cleansers were laid out, ready to be taken by yourself.

There's also self-serve ramyeon you can cook up yourself, so if you want to eat even more, it's a nice addition alongside the set meal.

Fruit for dessert prepared at the self-serve bar

I liked that there was fruit at the self-serve bar — it felt like they took care of you all the way to the end, not just during the meal.

If you're looking for a hearty Korean meal in Masan

Masan Ssamjangjip's appeal wasn't a flashy menu but the ssambap set that lets you enjoy several side dishes, wrap vegetables, stir-fried pork, and doenjang jjigae all at once.

The full 14,900 won ssambap set spread per person

I especially liked getting this many varied side dishes for 14,900 won per person, and it seemed like a good place to visit on a day when you want to eat vegetables and lots of different sides rather than just meat.
