Seongbuk beer bar open till 8am with boneless fried chicken: Dosi Beer

On a Wednesday evening, 20-somethings and 30-somethings were having dinner and drinks with happy faces, spending their time so well.

I visited Dosi Beer, a popular bar near Seongshin Women's University.

My partner and I stopped by after work to have dinner and a light drink, and I personally loved that it tasted great while also being cheap and great value.

Where else these days can you get 1kg of salty-sweet, slightly spicy fried chicken for ₩18,000, and a mountain of tangy, savory kimchi fried rice for ₩9,500 — at a bar, no less?

My partner: "Nice pick, the portion is bigger than I expected too!"

On top of that, there was this romantic, hip yet warm combination of brick interior and soft sofas. It even had a bit of an open-air 'yajang' feel to it.

I arrived a little early at Exit 2, and there were plenty of benches right in front where I could comfortably wait for my partner.

Inside, red brick-toned tiles, orange sofas, and warm lighting come together for a comfortable retro vibe. Slightly unbalanced yet somehow just right, if that makes sense? The four-cut photo booth strips and cute dolls on the wall add a friendly touch too, making it a good fit for drinks with friends or a casual date.

My partner: "It's unique but the vibe is still clean and put-together."

The second floor also has long sofas and several tables, making it a good option for group gatherings — friend meetups, club get-togethers near Seongshin Women's University, that kind of thing.

Some seats are divided by low walls and backrests so you don't lock eyes directly with the next table, which was a nice touch. The window seats have big glass windows looking out onto the alley, so it doesn't feel cramped, and you can enjoy the lively night view too.

Menu and what two people ordered for 41,800 won

I think the signature items range from dishes under ₩10,000 that fill you up, to a 1kg chicken dish for sharing with a group — good options for any budget or group size. There are also soups, simple sides, and dry snacks, so there's plenty to choose from even if your friends' tastes differ.

My partner and I picked the boneless fried chicken, which pairs well with beer, and the sausage kimchi fried rice, which could double as a hearty dinner. For drinks, we ordered Zombie draft beer, Zombie dark beer, and Chamisul soju.

It was enough food to fill up two grown men, and the food alone came to ₩27,500. Even with three drinks ordered, the total was ₩41,800. Given today's prices, that feels like a great deal to me. I could see why this trendy, value-for-money open-air bar draws so many people in their 20s and 30s.

The free snack: Nunettine crackers

Nunettine crackers came out as the complimentary snack. Most places just give you ppeongtwigi (puffed rice snacks), but this sweet, nutty, crispy snack was great for a drink of soju or beer before the food arrived.

Boneless fried chicken with scallions, 18,000 won

Honestly, I didn't expect much boneless fried chicken for ₩18,000. These days even ordering from a regular chicken shop often costs over ₩23,000 as a base.

But it came out with a really solid spread: salad, french fries, boneless fried chicken thigh, and a generous pile of shredded scallions.

The sauce was a sweet braised soy sauce with a kick of wasabi mixed in, so the sweet-salty-spicy-tingly combo never got old, and it went especially well as a beer snack.

The thigh meat was moist and thick, and the batter was crispy enough to shatter in your mouth, which was great — but the scallion cutting was a bit uneven, which I found slightly disappointing.

My partner: "Good that the scallions aren't spicy, but some of the pieces are cut really big, right?" Me: "Some are thin too, but yeah, it's a bit inconsistent."

Other than that, the portion was generous enough for both of us to eat until full.

Sausage kimchi fried rice, 9,500 won

For ₩9,500, the sausage kimchi fried rice came with a really solid spread. Fried-looking soft-boiled egg, actually crispy fried sausage, and a generous pile of seaweed flakes.

The seasoning was spicy, salty, tangy, and slightly sweet in just the right balance, and the portion was generous enough that it worked as a full meal, not just a bar snack.

Crispy on the outside, mild-tasting sausage, and a soft-boiled egg that pretty much anyone would like — eating them together made for a really satisfying bite.

One thing though: the seasoning on its own was perfect, but if you pile on too much seaweed flake, it got a bit too salty for my taste, so I'd recommend adding it little by little.

Of course, pairing it with the refreshing Dosi draft beer that came with it balanced out that saltiness perfectly. The dark beer also had a heavy-yet-light feel without an overly bitter taste, finishing clean, which really suited my palate.
