In short

Ttangkkeut Maeul is a sashimi restaurant inside Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market in Dongjak, Seoul, using two connected units, No. 42 and 43, on the first floor. On a first trip to Noryangjin, a couple picked up the Ttangkkeut Maeul premium sashimi platter of crescent sweetlip, olive flounder, red seabream, sea bass, salmon and frozen bluefin tuna, and the thick cuts and generous wasabi stood out most. Sets run 60,000–170,000 won, and a 1,000 won parking discount ticket plus a 5% Naver notification coupon soften the bill.

Ttangkkeut Maeul, a sashimi restaurant inside Noryangjin fish market

This time I'm writing up Ttangkkeut Maeul, a sashimi restaurant in the Noryangjin fish market located in Dongjak-gu, Seoul.

Inside view of Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market

I visited Noryangjin fish market — Korea's most famous seafood market — for the very first time.

A thick-cut spread of Ttangkkeut Maeul premium sashimi

I don't think I'd ever eaten seafood until I was stuffed before, but this might have been the first time. Ttangkkeut Maeul's sashimi was thick-cut and there was a lot of it. It felt like something straight out of a cooking show, it was so good — I really want to recommend it to you all.

These days fish markets take orders by QR code. Whether the owner is just a tech-savvy new generation type or not, I somehow felt like fish markets should still be bank-transfer-only places, haha.

Sashimi set types and price list
Price guide by small, medium and large sashimi set sizes

There are all kinds of sashimi sets. There seem to be seven set types altogether — small runs ₩60,000 to ₩90,000, medium ₩80,000 to ₩130,000, large ₩100,000 to ₩170,000. There are even extra-large and extra-extra-large sizes.

Looking further down, there were two more options — croaker sashimi and assorted gizzard shad sashimi.

Where is Ttangkkeut Maeul and what is the shop like?

Fish market entrance near Noryangjin Station Exit 9

Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market, a 3-minute walk from Exit 9 of Noryangjin Station, was packed with people from the entrance onward.

At Ttangkkeut Maeul, located in No. 42 and 43 on the 1st floor, there's enough of a wait that 5-6 staff members were busily slicing sashimi. They were so skilled that even with the wait, I didn't have to stand around long — I liked that!

While I waited a bit for my order, I got to check out the lively, still-swimming fish.

The store uses two connected units, live-fish tank No. 42 and 43, on the first floor of the fish market.

Uni (sea urchin roe) is ₩30,000.

In-store sign listing the price of uni

You can order via the QR code at the bottom left. There was a sign that read "a business that skimps on ingredients is a business that fails" — that's not something you can casually write down, so it must mean they're confident!

With so many people around it looked hard to get anyone's attention, but there were staff dedicated just to taking orders, which was nice. Today's workload looked massive.

What comes in the Ttangkkeut Maeul premium sashimi platter?

The full packed-to-go Ttangkkeut Maeul premium sashimi spread

The Ttangkkeut Maeul premium sashimi, made up of crescent sweetlip, olive flounder, red seabream, sea bass, salmon and frozen bluefin tuna —

Salmon and frozen bluefin tuna sashimi
Sashimi served with a generous portion of wasabi

The variety was great, and the thickness, flavor, and quantity were all really satisfying. And the amount of wasabi was insane. My girlfriend and I are both wasabi maniacs, and we've often ended up short on it — this was the first time it was ever enough.

Dipping sauce made with sesame oil and ssamjang

They also made a dipping sauce with sesame oil, minced garlic, ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), cheongyang chili, and sesame seeds.

Salad served alongside the sashimi

They also made a salad to help prevent blood sugar spikes.

Live shrimp purchased on the 2nd floor of the fish market

Ttangkkeut Maeul doesn't have live shrimp, so I bought that separately on the 2nd floor.

Receipt review sweet shrimp, the 5% coupon and parking costs

Sign explaining the sweet shrimp receipt review perk

Plenty of places give you a soda for leaving a Naver receipt review, but Ttangkkeut Maeul gives you sweet shrimp instead.

For parking, figure around ₩3,000 an hour. If you follow them via "get notifications" on Naver Place, you get a 5% discount coupon. Since a sashimi set averages around ₩80,000–100,000, that's a ₩4,000–5,000 discount — definitely worth grabbing :)

I heard last year's giant greater amberjack season started in late October, so I'll have to go back for that again this year!!
