Gyudon set with poached egg at Gyudongjip, a Noryangjin donburi spot

In short

Gyudongjip Noryangjin Main Branch is a Japanese rice bowl (donburi) restaurant about 400m from Noryangjin Station Exit 3 in Dongjak, Seoul. Lunch with an elementary school child covered the gyudon han-sang set (mini udon and 3 pieces of karaage), the limited-edition sous vide chashu-don set with mini soba, a sweet potato cheese croquette and melon soda, and the poached egg mixed through the rice and the spicy karai sauce stood out most. With partitioned tables and tablet ordering, Gyudongjip suits solo diners and parents with kids equally well.

How to walk to Gyudongjip from Noryangjin Station Exit 3

I took my kid out and we went looking for a good lunch spot. Walking from Noryangjin Station Exit 3, we got there pretty quickly. Gyudongjip sits on the first floor of an alley building near the station, and the clean, tidy exterior gave off a comfortable vibe right away. Since the neighborhood is packed with cram schools, the menu felt substantial and easy to drop into without pressure — very much the feel of a budget-friendly Noryangjin restaurant.

Seating at Gyudongjip: partitioned tables and solo bar seats

Stepping inside, the interior was really well organized. There were 2-person and 4-person tables set up nicely, plus a row of single bar seats running along the wall. With tablet ordering and a real sense of partition between tables, it looked perfectly set up for nearby students or office workers eating alone.

There were actually quite a few people eating solo, but the atmosphere was so comfortable that bringing a kid along wasn't awkward at all.

The Gyudongjip menu: rice bowls, curry and sides

Once seated, I browsed the tablet menu slowly. From the main rice bowls to curry to sides, there was quite a wide range to choose from.

  • Gyudon / Gyudon set / Gyudon han-sang (full set)
  • Sous vide chashu-don / Chashu-don set
  • Yukhoe-don / Yukhoe-don set
  • 24-hour aged curry / Chashu curry / Karaage curry / Gyoza curry / Shrimp tempura curry
  • Udon / Cold mobile noodles
  • Karaage / Shrimp tempura / Sweet potato cheese croquette / Gyoza / Melon soda

We went with the signature gyudon han-sang set with mini udon and 3 pieces of karaage, plus the limited-time sous vide chashu-don set with mini mobile noodles added. On top of that we added the sweet potato cheese croquette my kid loves and a cold melon soda.

A tray fully loaded with Gyudongjip's set meal

The moment the tray arrived, packed full of food, my jaw dropped. The portions were generous and the price was so reasonable — I instantly understood why everyone calls this a budget-friendly Noryangjin restaurant.

Gyudon han-sang set: mixing in the poached egg with a kid

The gyudon han-sang my kid especially loved had tender beef piled generously on top of the rice. The seasoning was savory and salty with no gamey smell at all, pairing perfectly with the rice.

Popping the poached egg and mixing it into the meat and rice doubled the richness, and my kid couldn't stop scooping up spoonfuls, saying it was delicious.

Three crispy pieces of karaage
Warm broth of the mini udon

The karaage that came alongside was crispy outside and juicy inside, making an excellent side dish, and the warm, deep broth of the mini udon made everything feel extra satisfying. Honestly, gyudon might be one of the best hearty lunch options out there.

Limited-edition sous vide chashu-don set and spicy karai sauce

The sous vide chashu-don set I picked came with a large piece of chashu wrapped around the rice bowl. I cut it into bite-sized pieces with the scissors, and thanks to the sous vide cooking, it wasn't dry at all — it just melted in my mouth. Tender, not chewy, with a really excellent texture.

Following the instructions on the guide, I moved the chashu to a separate plate, added the spicy karai sauce, and mixed it with the rice — the sweet and salty meat with that spicy umami kick was so good I didn't get tired of it until the very last bite.

That sauce was honestly the thing we loved most. Whenever we wanted to switch things up mid-meal, adding the spicy sauce made everything taste amazing. This sauce is a total game-changer!

Sipping the cool mini mobile noodle broth, with bits of ice floating in it, between bites felt like it reset my palate completely.

Sweet potato cheese croquette, melon soda and plum tea

The crispy fried sweet potato cheese croquette was a real treat — the moment I bit into it, sweet sweet potato mousse and melty cheese stretched out in a satisfying pull. The bright green melon soda, with its refreshing fizz, paired nicely with everything too.

Table guide with instructions for requesting extra rice or side dishes

Looking at the table guide, I noticed they thoughtfully let you request extra rice, side dishes, or sauce right through the tablet if you run out.

Cool plum tea served after the meal

After finishing the meal, we wrapped it up perfectly with a cool cup of plum tea. We left feeling wonderfully full after a proper, hearty rice bowl meal — both my kid and I. Comfortable for solo dining and just as good for a group lunch, this budget-friendly Noryangjin restaurant is worth a visit whenever you're craving a hearty Japanese rice bowl.
