In short
Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a buckwheat specialty Korean restaurant in Wondang, Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi, close enough to Starfield Goyang to slot into a day out. This visit brought perilla buckwheat kalguksu, bibim makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles in spicy sauce), and a half-and-half order of meat and kimchi buckwheat dumplings, along with the barley rice and yeolmu kimchi served before the meal. Where is Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, the makguksu restaurant near Starfield Goyang?
Here's my review of Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, a hidden gem in Wondang, Goyang. Now that the weather's cooling down and weekends are perfect for a drive, a lot of people head out toward Starfield Goyang, right?
It sits close enough to Starfield that it's the perfect stop for a meal after shopping or a date. If you're looking for clean, deep-flavored makguksu (buckwheat cold noodles) and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) in Wondang, Goyang, this is a place I really want to recommend.
Parking at Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu: a large private lot
Parking is one of the most important things when picking a restaurant, right? Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu has a very large dedicated lot both in front of and behind the building.
There's no parking stress at all, so even nervous drivers can pull in comfortably. When parking is tight, you're exhausted before you even sit down — but here you can walk in relaxed, which put me in a good mood from the start!!
Inside Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu: mood and seating
Walking inside, the space was much wider and cleaner than I expected. Everything felt really well kept, hygiene-wise.
The four-person tables are generously spaced, which makes it a great spot for family meals. It's totally comfortable to bring along kids or parents, and just as pleasant for a date or a relaxed meal with friends — the openness of the space really works in its favor! You can enjoy your food comfortably without feeling cramped.

There's a solid lineup of delicious buckwheat dishes. This time we tried the restaurant's signature perilla buckwheat kalguksu, the refreshing and tangy bibim makguksu, and a half-and-half order of dumplings!

Up front there's a self bar with buckwheat tea (myeonsu) and extra side dishes.

Before the meal: nutty barley rice and yeolmu kimchi
Once you order, they bring out neat basic side dishes along with barley rice to start.

I piled the crisp, cool yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi) that came as a side onto the popping barley rice, drizzled in a bit of gochujang and sesame oil, and mixed it all up. It was the perfect appetite-whetting starter! The nuttiness of the sesame oil mixed with the tang of the yeolmu kimchi made the wait for the main dishes go by without any boredom, haha.
Half meat, half kimchi buckwheat dumplings, 9,000 won

Buckwheat dumplings (half meat / half kimchi): thin wrappers, packed filling, all handmade (★strongly recommended★). If you visit Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, I really, strongly recommend you order the dumplings! (Price: ₩9,000)

We asked for half meat and half kimchi dumplings. Since the wrappers contain buckwheat, they have a subtle buckwheat tint. Most of all, the wrappers are incredibly thin and chewy, and the filling inside is packed tight with no gaps. One bite and the flavor of the ingredients bursts out in your mouth.

I personally love spicy kimchi dumplings, but here both the kimchi and meat versions are packed with filling and have great umami, so I was equally happy with both. Every dumpling has that handmade, put-real-care-into-it depth of flavor. They're the perfect pairing alongside kalguksu or makguksu!

Perilla buckwheat kalguksu, 11,000 won: the broth and the ongsimi dough balls
Perilla buckwheat kalguksu: rich, nutty broth meets chewy ongsimi (dumpling-like wheat balls), priced at ₩11,000.

Finally, the perilla buckwheat kalguksu arrived! It's served steaming hot in the bowl, and the look alone makes your mouth water.
The broth: loaded generously with perilla seeds, it's rich and thick, yet deeply nutty and savory. One spoonful and your whole body warms up and relaxes. The broth is so addictive that I couldn't put my spoon down by the end, haha.
The noodles: the buckwheat noodles have their signature nuttiness and a springy bite that pairs perfectly with the perilla broth.

There are a few chewy ongsimi and fluffy potato pieces mixed into the kalguksu! Biting into the ongsimi is a treat unto itself. I really recommend the combo of the nutty broth and chewy ongsimi.

Bibim makguksu, 11,000 won, piled with lettuce and cucumber
Bibim makguksu is priced at ₩11,000.

The last dish we tried, bibim makguksu, looks refreshing just to look at! It comes topped generously with the seasoning sauce, fresh lettuce, and cucumber, which were great to eat crunchy alongside the noodles. It wasn't overly spicy — the tangy, sweet-and-sour flavor really came through, leaving your palate feeling clean.

If you visit in summer, I'd definitely recommend this bibim makguksu! The cool buckwheat noodles combined with the savory sauce feel like they wash away the heat completely. Pouring the accompanying cold broth over it makes it even more refreshing — slurp away!

Buckwheat: good for you and good to eat!
