Jongno 3-ga bakery three breads eaten on the walk home: Munhwa Bakery

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a same-day-bake bakery on Donhwamun-ro, between Jongno 3-ga Station and Ikseon-dong in Seoul. Only 2 parties are let in at a time, so the line looks long but moves fast, and this visit came away with garlic bread (₩6,800), mugwort rice cake bread (₩5,700) and coffee bread (₩5,800), all opened and eaten on the walk home. All three were hits, and Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread alone is worth a return trip.

Today I'm introducing Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵), a Jongno 3-ga favorite! I found it while walking around Ikseon-dong, and apparently it's famous for its garlic bread?! There were way more kinds of bread than I expected, but to cut to the chase — everything I tried was delicious haha. Especially the garlic bread, seriously so good, ㅠㅠ

Where is Munhwa Bakery, and what are its hours?

Munhwa Bakery, a well-vibed Jongno 3-ga bakery located in Ikseon-dong!

Outside the Munhwa Bakery building near Jongno 3-ga Station

Munhwa Bakery is close to Jongno 3-ga Station, so it's a great stop while wandering Ikseon-dong! There are so many flashy cafés and bakeries in Ikseon-dong these days, but this place just fits the Jongno vibe somehow, haha.

How long is the wait at Munhwa Bakery with 2-party entry?

Munhwa Bakery lets in 2 parties at a time, so the line might look long, but the wait clears up quickly!

Also, Munhwa Bakery only sells bread baked that same day, and whatever doesn't sell gets donated to kids without meals, elderly people living alone, people with disabilities living at home, free meal centers, homeless shelters, and social welfare facilities. Knowing that a bakery runs with this kind of purpose made me like it even more.

What's on the Munhwa Bakery menu, and what does it cost?

Once you step inside, the bread is all lined up, and I was surprised by how many kinds there actually were, haha. I thought since the garlic bread is famous, maybe it's a place with just a few garlic bread varieties?! Not at all. Injeolmi bread (sweet rice cake bread), peanut bread, mugwort rice cake bread, black sesame bread, milk cream bread, cheese bread, ink condensed milk bread, and more — every shelf was packed with bread!!

And of course there was Munhwa Bakery's famous coffee bread at ₩5,800 and garlic bread at ₩6,800. Seriously that's a lot of options, right?!

Garlic bread being continuously restocked at Munhwa Bakery

The garlic bread gets restocked continuously right beside you — big chunky loaves dripping with sauce, honestly impossible not to grab one, haha. The coffee bread was huge too, looked filling enough on its own. After some deliberation I picked garlic bread, mugwort rice cake bread, and coffee bread!

The shopping bag with Munhwa Bakery's signature logo, haha, would make a nice gift too? I immediately understood why this Jongno 3-ga bakery has so many customers, haha. If you're around Ikseon-dong, you have to come by!!

Packaged coffee bread from Munhwa Bakery

Coffee bread ₩5,800 — castella-soft with coffee cream

Coffee bread, ₩5,800. And personally, this one really impressed me! Even in photos it looks long and hefty, right?! But contrary to its looks, the outside is genuinely soft and tender.

Cross-section of the coffee bread's soft exterior
Coffee cream inside the coffee bread

Kind of fluffy and soft like castella?! And inside is coffee cream — this coffee cream was genuinely outstanding, ㅠㅠ. While eating it I thought it felt familiar somehow, and it turns out it reminded me a little of a coffee version of the trendy Haryangpungcha white roll.

A bite taken out of Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread

Soft on the outside, coffee cream on the inside — it was the kind of flavor that kept my hand reaching back for more, haha. If you like coffee desserts, definitely try this one too.

Garlic bread ₩6,800 — plump rolls loaded with garlic sauce

Garlic bread, ₩6,800. First up, the one I was most looking forward to! It's Munhwa Bakery's famous item so I knew I had to try it. And it was genuinely so good, ㅠㅠ haha.

Close-up of the chunky, thick garlic bread

Unlike the usual thin, crispy garlic baguette, this bread itself is big and chunky. There's tons of garlic sauce packed in between, and one bite in, I got it — I understood why it's famous. All three breads I tried this time were delicious, but the garlic bread is the one I'm definitely buying again next visit, haha. If you're bakery-hunting in Jongno 3-ga and end up at Munhwa Bakery, make sure to grab the garlic bread.

Chewy mugwort rice cake bread

Mugwort rice cake bread ₩5,700 — too good to save for home

Mugwort rice cake bread, ₩5,700. And this one had my kind of name from the start! I love mugwort desserts so I picked it up, and the moment I took a bite the mugwort aroma filled my mouth. Couldn't resist — ended up eating it on the walk home ^-^

And I get why it's called mugwort rice cake bread — the texture is genuinely chewy. With that strong mugwort aroma plus the chewy texture, this one was also delicious, ㅠㅠ. It's not quite the signature item like the garlic bread, but if you like mugwort, I'd recommend this one too.

Is Munhwa Bakery in Jongno 3-ga worth the trip?

Munhwa Bakery, my Jongno 3-ga bakery visit! I was curious about it because of the famous garlic bread, but once I got there the variety was way more than I expected, and the garlic bread, mugwort rice cake bread, and coffee bread I picked out were all successes, haha. The garlic bread in particular is famous for a reason, and the coffee bread was surprisingly delicious too — recommend!!

Only selling same-day baked bread, and donating the leftovers to those in need — that also feels like a genuinely good feature unique to Munhwa Bakery, haha. If you're looking for a bakery to stop by while exploring Ikseon-dong, or hunting for a good bakery in Jongno 3-ga, give Munhwa Bakery a try! Next time I go, I'm definitely buying the garlic bread again, haha. 🥰
