Pohang mulhoe restaurant for a late weekend dinner: Ppwang Mulhoe
In short
Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) specialist on Haean-ro by Yeongildae in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. On a return visit late on a weekend evening, the order was chamgajami mulhoe (cold raw flounder soup) and fried squid, with a sweet-tangy broth about as spicy as Jin Ramen Spicy and free squid soup from the self bar. With a dedicated lot right in front of the restaurant, Ppwang Mulhoe is an easy, parking-stress-free pick in Pohang.

Back for chamgajami mulhoe after last visit's squid mulhoe
When you think of Pohang, the first thing that comes to mind is refreshing mulhoe. There are lots of mulhoe restaurants in Pohang, but Ppwang Mulhoe is by far my favorite and the one I keep coming back to. The squid mulhoe I had here this summer was so good I kept thinking about it, so this time I came back for the savory, chewy flatfish (chamgajami) mulhoe.

What Ppwang Mulhoe feels like late on a weekend evening
Walking in, my first impression was how neat and clean everything looked. The owner greeted me warmly, which put me in a good mood right away, and the bright interior and thorough hygiene management made it a place I could eat at with peace of mind. I visited late on a weekend evening and it was busy — delivery and takeout orders kept coming in nonstop.

Ppwang Mulhoe's menu and what was ordered that night
Looking at the menu, there's a wide range — squid mulhoe, flatfish mulhoe, half-and-half mulhoe, hoe-deopbap (raw fish rice bowl), sliced raw fish, and sides. Remembering how good it was last time, I ordered the flatfish mulhoe together with fried squid.

Self-bar side dishes at Ppwang Mulhoe: don't skip the squid soup
After ordering, I checked out the self-bar set up on one side of the restaurant. Ppwang Mulhoe runs all its side dishes on a self-service system, so you can help yourself freely. Stir-fried sausage and vegetables, seasoned doraji, fish cake stir-fry, squid soup — so many options, and every single one is delicious.
Personally, the squid soup is really, really good!!!!!! Loaded with squid, the broth is slightly spicy, and it's good enough to be sold on its own. It's also great poured over rice, so definitely try it.

How the chamgajami mulhoe looks and how spicy the broth is
After bringing over and setting up the side dishes, I waited a bit and then the main dish, flatfish mulhoe, finally arrived. Fresh, chewy flatfish sashimi was piled high on top, with crunchy cucumber and pear layered generously underneath.

The mulhoe broth isn't very spicy — about as spicy as Jin Ramen's spicy version — so even people who can't handle spice well can enjoy it. Too spicy or too sweet gets old fast, but true to a Pohang mulhoe favorite, the broth is genuinely delicious (packed with umami).

The tangy, sweet, refreshing broth blends perfectly with the ingredients — complete umami explosion 🔥. It's the kind of addictive mulhoe you crave not just in summer but all year round. The fish was so generous that I could enjoy that fresh texture all the way to the last spoonful, and it was delicious whether mixed with rice or with the self-bar thin noodles added in — the broth's deep flavor held up either way. Very, very satisfying.

Ppwang Mulhoe's fried squid: the best I've had
The fried squid we ordered as a side with the mulhoe was truly next-level!!!!!! The outside was fried in clean oil, golden and crispy, while the squid inside was plump and moist — genuinely delicious. The batter itself stayed savory and crispy for a long time, and pairing it bite by bite with the mulhoe worked really well.
Honestly, it was good enough that I can confidently call it the best fried squid of my life. If you visit Ppwang Mulhoe, definitely order the fried squid alongside your mulhoe. The portion is big too, good for sharing between two (goes great with beer).

Why Ppwang Mulhoe is worth it near Yeongildae in Pohang
Friendly service, a spotless restaurant, and that unmatched mulhoe broth — Ppwang Mulhoe didn't fall short anywhere. If you're looking for a good restaurant near Yeongildae or a great spot in Pohang, I'd recommend this one without a second thought (highly, highly recommend 👍🏻).
