Hanwoo galbi lunch course at a Seocho Korean restaurant: Huiyeol

In short

Huiyeol Seocho Gyodae Branch is a Korean beef restaurant with private rooms, on the basement floor of 1 Beopwon-ro 1-gil near Gyodae Station in Seocho, Seoul. On a weekday lunch with a friend, the lunch special hanwoo (Korean beef) galbi course arrived as a full sequence: pre-meal rice porridge, a spread of side dishes, galbisal (short rib flap) grilled on a hot stone plate, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), seasonal hot-pot rice and omija tea to finish. The lunch special runs 35,000 to 55,000 won per person, and with several private rooms Huiyeol also works for group dinners.

This Gyodae Station restaurant I recently visited with a friend had really nice private rooms — perfect for a work dinner too! And the atmosphere and taste needed no explanation, haha. Huiyeol Seocho Gyodae Branch was a total win, so let me share the full review.

The moment we walked in, almost every table was packed with customers — yep, this is clearly a hot spot for office workers on weekday lunches, haha. I was excited for the meal ahead.

Since we came looking for a lunch spot near Gyodae Station, we checked out the lunch special and the meal menu. It had been a while since I'd seen this friend, so we decided to treat ourselves — we picked the hanwoo galbi option from the lunch special, yay. The course started with pre-meal rice porridge and went all the way through mains, sides, and dessert tea. See the prices below for reference.

  • Hanwoo bulgogi hot-pot rice: ₩24,000
  • Geumtae hot-pot rice: ₩23,000

Pre-meal porridge and the side dish spread

A full table of side dishes from the lunch special

We didn't wait long before the side dishes arrived. I'd already been thinking how nice it was that the table was spacious and the chairs comfortable... but then the visual of the table filling up with banchan (side dishes) really won me over, haha.

A bowl of pre-meal rice porridge
Refreshing salad served as an appetizer

We started with the soft, mild pre-meal porridge and a refreshing salad as the appetizer—

Seasonal pan-fried jeon side dish
A side plate of pumpkin salad
Well-seasoned namul side dish
A variety of kimchi served alongside

Seasonal pan-fried jeon, a sweet pumpkin salad, well-seasoned namul (seasoned vegetable) side dishes that felt healthy to eat, and a variety of kimchi too! Everything was so good that my chopsticks kept going back for more :) Honestly, who could dislike this kind of Korean food.. ㅠㅠ

Hanwoo galbisal grilled on a hot stone plate

And then today's main event arrived! Hanwoo galbisal (grilled short rib flap), grilled right at the table. Even the sizzling sound sounded delicious. Ha.

A piece of hanwoo galbisal grilled crisp outside, juicy inside

It came out grilled crisp on the outside and juicy inside, and since the stone plate stays hot, it keeps cooking, so you can get it to just the doneness you like. One bite and it melted in my mouth — I thought, I need to come back here for dinner meat next time. Seriously... this would be a crowd-pleaser for a group dinner, no question.

Onions and mushrooms grilled alongside the meat

Hanwoo galbisal dipped in salt

The onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes grilled alongside were sweet and a perfect pairing. Dipping it in salt alone was already perfect, but you can enjoy it however you like since there are so many ways to eat it... ^^!!! My friend and I kept saying it was delicious and immediately saved it on the map as a Gyodae Station must-visit, hehe.

Seasonal hot-pot rice, scorched rice and omija tea to finish

Doenjang jjigae served as part of the course
Hot-pot rice topped with seasonal ingredients
Rice served from the hot pot into a bowl
Scorched rice enjoyed at the end of the meal

Koreans run on rice, as they say. Doenjang jjigae and seasonal hot-pot rice came out, and after finishing that warm, delicious rice, following it up with the nurungji (scorched rice) makes for the perfect finish. Honestly, I was already stuffed from eating so much of the mains and sides, but somehow there was still room for the nurungji. I guess when it's this good, you just keep eating, hehe.

Cool omija tea served for dessert

For dessert tea, we got omija (five-flavor berry) tea. After eating such a hearty meal, finishing with something cool and refreshing like omija was the best. The atmosphere, the staff's service, and the food — all three were perfect here!!!

If you're wondering where to go for a good lunch near Gyodae Station, or looking for a restaurant with private rooms for a group dinner, definitely give Huiyeol Seocho Gyodae Branch a try! If you need to book a room, check Naver Place.
