Family-friendly tonkatsu restaurant in Yangju: Himawari

In short

Himawari Yangju Okjeong Main Branch is a Japanese tonkatsu restaurant in Yangju, Gyeonggi. My family tried the hire katsu set, loin katsu set, and bite-size curry, and the high chair, baby tableware, scissors, and tongs made the meal especially easy. Himawari Yangju Okjeong Main Branch is a comforting choice for tonkatsu with kids.

When you go out to eat with a child, there are so many things to think about—from choosing the menu to the restaurant layout and whether there is a high chair, right? I had been craving Japanese tonkatsu with a crisp exterior and juicy interior for days, so I visited Himawari Yangju Okjeong Main Branch, a tonkatsu specialist in Okjeong-dong that is getting lots of word-of-mouth among moms.

Warm wood-toned interior and a steady stream of guests

Wood-toned interior at Himawari

The moment I walked in, the warm, cozy wood-toned interior caught my eye. The soft lighting and neatly arranged space made me feel relaxed even before the meal.

We went a little outside mealtime, but the restaurant was still packed with guests! People kept coming in throughout our meal, and before I knew it, a waiting line had formed. I thought, “Ah, this really is a truly popular tonkatsu spot in Okjeong-dong.”

Even amid all that bustle, the staff managed the flow smoothly and served us kindly, so the meal never felt chaotic and was very comfortable.

What they prepared for our child

Taking a child to a restaurant always means having lots to manage, but Himawari Okjeong Main Branch impressed me from the moment we entered.

As soon as we sat down, they brought over a high chair as standard, along with a baby spoon, fork, small scissors, tongs, and dedicated baby tableware—so thoughtfully! At many places, you have to ask separately for scissors or tongs, but here they saw we were with a child and prepared everything in advance without us saying a word.

Without scissors and tongs, cutting tonkatsu for a child takes surprisingly more effort and is inconvenient. Thanks to that thoughtful care, getting the meal ready was so much easier.

Each table has an ordering tablet, so we could browse photos and order easily. The owner has focused on Japanese-style tonkatsu for nearly 20 years, and it showed in the care given to ingredients and sourcing.

In particular, they say the coating uses no synthetic additives—just flour, egg wash, and breadcrumbs—and is quickly fried at high heat. It was clean-tasting and not greasy, so I felt comfortable giving it to my child, too.

We wanted to try a little of everything, so we put together a satisfying order of the signature dishes!

Moist and tender hire katsu set

The hire katsu set arrived first! The neatly arranged, rounded pieces had a slight glimpse of bright pink juices, and just looking at them made my mouth water.

One bite and wow—the meat was truly tender! When meat is dry or tough, children sometimes chew it and spit it out, but this one pulled apart softly along the grain, and my child happily ate it all up. Each breadcrumb was distinct and crisp on the outside, while the inside was juicy and moist. The texture was just perfect.

A little of the accompanying wasabi or simply a light dip in salt lets you taste the meat's clean, natural flavor properly.

The loin katsu set we tried next had just the right balance of the rich fat layer characteristic of pork loin and lean meat. My husband kept giving it a thumbs-up because of the savory flavor that developed with every chew.

There was a small mortar on the table for grinding sesame seeds, and it was a small pleasure to grind them together with my child and mix the sauce. Dipped in the fragrant sesame sauce we had ground ourselves, the crisp pork loin was an exact match. The cabbage salad served alongside kept it fresh with no chance for it to feel heavy, so the combination was really lovely.

The bite-size curry I was glad we added

While looking through the menu, we added the “bite-size curry” because it looked easy to enjoy without being too much. We really would have regretted not ordering it!

It had a rich, deep Japanese curry flavor. Dunking the tonkatsu coating generously into the curry sauce was a treat, and mixing it into the rice made it a true rice thief. The basic tonkatsu portion was already generous enough to fill us up, but we still cleaned up every last bit of curry.

The food and interior were great, of course, and the staff service was excellent too—they never lost their kindness despite the nonstop guests. Above all, from a mom’s perspective, the biggest appeal was being able to enjoy a meal at ease thanks to their thoughtful provision of baby tableware, scissors, and tongs.

There may be a wait on weekends or at peak times, so I recommend coming a little early! If you are looking for a delicious place to eat out with your child near Okjeong, be sure to stop by Himawari Okjeong Main Branch at least once.
