Where is Sodamchon in Jeongja-dong, Suwon?

Now that the weather's turning cooler, I keep craving shabu shabu — hot broth loaded with fresh vegetables. This time I visited Sodamchon Suwon Jeongja Branch in Jeongja-dong, Suwon. I tried their signature wagyu shabu shabu with rice paper rolls for two, and it was light yet filling — a solid pick for a family meal or a date. ^^

Sodamchon Suwon Jeongja Branch is located in Jeongja-dong, Suwon, so it wasn't hard to find. It's also fairly close to Starfield Suwon, so it's easy to build a course around it before or after shopping. If you're driving, it's worth checking the parking situation too.

You can park at Seonil Parking Building (Lostime Building), 3rd or 4th floor, across from Lotteria, and the restaurant covers 1 hour 30 minutes of parking. On days when you don't want the outing to end after just a meal, it's nice to swing by Starfield for shopping or browsing, or if you want a more leisurely date, heading toward Hwaseong Haenggung is also a good option. Because of routes like this, I personally felt this place fits well into a full day's plan rather than being just a place to grab a meal. It's a great location especially when you want to combine a family meal with some shopping.

Inside Sodamchon: a relaxed room for a slow meal

Walking inside, the space felt clean and comfortable overall. With shabu shabu, meals naturally stretch on as you simmer the broth and add vegetables one by one, and I liked that the atmosphere suited that relaxed pace. haha

Partitioned seating areas inside the restaurant

That's probably why it would work well for people looking for a good Suwon date restaurant too. When a too-formal place feels like too much and a too-loud place isn't your thing, this hits a comfortable middle ground ^^ Since I'd made a reservation, they set aside a reserved seat for us. ^^ Each seating area is somewhat partitioned off, which I liked.

Wagyu shabu shabu with rice paper rolls and the self-serve bar

What we ordered today was one of Sodamchon's signature menus — wagyu shabu shabu with rice paper rolls, for two. I loved that it's a menu where you get to enjoy shabu shabu and rice paper rolls together!!! I'd say Sodamchon's strength is being able to enjoy fresh vegetables, deep broth, tender meat, and a varied salad bar all together. Shall we take a look at the salad bar first? haha

What comes with the wagyu shabu shabu for two

Once we got settled, let's take a look at the self-serve bar first, shall we? ^^ The variety of vegetables caught my eye. Shabu shabu is more appealing when you add plenty of vegetables rather than just eating a lot of meat, right? Especially with the rice paper rolls added in, it made for a pretty varied meal. So if you're looking for a good Suwon shabu shabu spot and want to eat lots of vegetables too, pay attention here!!

First, there's the broth for the rice paper rolls!! ^^ And soup and pre-meal bread!! I started with the bread first. haha It had a buttery, morning-bread feel, and the soup tasted like something everyone would recognize. Starting off warm before the meal felt really nice!!!

One of my favorite parts of shabu shabu is picking out vegetables to add. lol Rather than just eating meat, choosing mushrooms and vegetables to your taste and dropping them into the broth makes the flavor shift a little each time.

Sodamchon lets you enjoy a wide range of ingredients in one place, so as a diner, the options felt pretty broad. And the salad selection — there was SO much of it~ ^^ hahaha

A variety of salad bar options

It's a big mistake to think the salad bar is just salad! There was even soup tteokbokki (rice cake in broth) that kids love, along with yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi) and regular kimchi!! I made myself a salad too — they had a variety of dressings, which was great!! I piled on plenty of vegetables, added some salad, and brought it all back to the table. I also grabbed plenty of vegetables for the rice paper rolls.

How the wagyu and vegetables tasted in the broth

Now for the most important part — the taste. The wagyu, cooked briefly in the broth as shabu shabu should be, kept its tender texture beautifully. Rather than overcooking it, I only cooked it until the color changed slightly, so it stayed moist rather than getting chewy. And eating the meat alone versus eating it with vegetables felt distinctly different.

Dipping the lightly-cooked meat in sauce gave it a clean, savory flavor, and pairing it with crisp vegetables added texture that made each bite so much fuller!! As more ingredients went into the broth, the flavor from the vegetables and meat kept deepening.

Shabu shabu broth simmering with added ingredients

It started out as a relatively clean broth, but once enough ingredients had gone in, a subtle savory depth built up that kept me coming back for more.

And the rice paper rolls! Personally, they were my favorite part of the meal that day!! Choosing whatever ingredients you like, wrapping them in rice paper, and rolling them up meant every bite turned out a little different, even with the same menu.

Wrapping meat and vegetables together with sauce, the savoriness of the wagyu paired beautifully with the crisp crunch of the vegetables. Above all, eating meat alone in shabu shabu can start to feel a bit heavy, but adding vegetables through the rice paper rolls made it feel much lighter.

Another fun part of shabu shabu is mixing sauces. Even with the same meat and vegetables, the flavor direction shifts depending on which sauce you pair it with, so it's fun trying out different combinations. Personally, my favorite was wrapping meat and vegetables together in one bite. The clean meat plus the crunch of vegetables made for a flavor that never felt heavy and kept me eating. haha

A sauce combo topped with garlic, scallion, and peanuts

At first I skipped the toppings and just used the sauces on the table, but the owner told me it tastes even better with toppings added! Thank you so much. haha Like this — adding garlic, scallion, and peanut toppings gave it a nice crunch too, and made everything even tastier!!! Check out the topping combo above and give it a try!!

Finishing with kalguksu noodles and egg porridge

It feels like a waste to just stop after finishing most of the shabu shabu, right? haha Adding kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) to the remaining broth and finishing with egg porridge made the meal feel truly complete.

Kalguksu noodles and porridge to end the shabu shabu meal

Since the broth had simmered with plenty of meat and vegetables, adding the kalguksu made the soup taste deeper and richer than at the start of the meal, with all that flavor infused in. At first I was going to throw in every vegetable I had left, but the owner recommended which vegetables would go best with the broth and noodles, which made it even tastier. haha

A soft, warm egg porridge finish

And the final egg porridge was so soft and warm that my spoon kept going even when I was already full. lol Personally, I think the true finish to shabu shabu has to include both the noodles and the porridge. ^^

Coffee and ice cream in Sodamchon's café space

There was one more thing about Sodamchon Suwon Jeongja Branch I liked more than expected — the café space you can use right after your meal. Usually after eating your fill of shabu shabu, you have to move somewhere else for coffee, but here you can go straight into café mode after eating, which was really convenient.

A post-meal space for enjoying coffee

Honestly, this place tastes better than a regular café — it's genuinely good for coffee!!! I was surprised at how decent the coffee bean flavor was. I figured post-meal coffee at a restaurant like this would just be something light to drink, but the beans were quite good, making it a nice way to end the meal with a cup. haha So what were the beans?! Turns out it's a premium 100% arabica blend of Colombia Supremo and Brazil Cerrado, harvested within the past 6 months!! No wonder... it tasted way better than other brands' coffee beans, no comparison!!! ^^

Post-meal coffee and ice cream selection
Chocolate, cookie, and strawberry ice cream

And is this place an ice cream spot too? haha They had chocolate, cookie, and strawberry, and I scooped every single flavor. haha Personally, cookie was my favorite! Though that's probably down to personal taste. haha

I went for an affogato? lol The coffee was already delicious, but pouring it over the ice cream made it taste even more amazing... so good!! I liked it so much I went back for another cup of coffee!! By the way, they also have iced tea, not just coffee! Ice cream really is the best way to finish, a nice palate cleanser after the meal.

Personally, this post-meal café space is what bumped up my overall satisfaction with the meal. Not having to drive somewhere else after shabu shabu to find a café was convenient, and being able to go from meal to dessert seamlessly in one place turned out to be a real advantage. Especially for family meals, having to go find a café afterward can be a hassle, so having it all handled in one spot is a real plus.

Pairing Sodamchon with a Starfield Suwon day out

If you're planning a meal before or after a trip to Starfield Suwon, doing Sodamchon for the meal and coffee, then moving on, would work well. Try the shabu shabu, the rice paper rolls, the wide variety of vegetables, and finish with coffee, iced tea, or ice cream~~~~~~~

The wagyu shabu shabu with rice paper rolls I had this time brought together tender meat, crisp vegetables, and warm broth in a combination that worked really well. If you're looking for a good Suwon date restaurant, I'd recommend the course that continues on to Starfield Suwon afterward, and for a family visit, it's a comfortable place to sit and chat while eating. If you're craving shabu shabu in Suwon and want fresh vegetables with tender wagyu, save Sodamchon Suwon Jeongja Branch to your list.
