Bok-nal (the dog days of summer) has already passed, but I've been feeling so run-down these past few days,, maybe it's the season changing, but I had no energy and felt totally drained, so I thought — time for a proper body-boosting meal!! So I headed out for eel starting at lunch. Today's pick-me-up dish: salt-grilled freshwater eel! I went to 99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch, known as an eel spot in Suwon's Homaesil neighborhood. Even the name sounds like it'll make you healthier — eat eel and live to 99, stay spry to 88~~ It's especially good for eating with parents, and I'd recommend it for family meals or if you're looking for a Homaesil work dinner spot too.

Right from the exterior, big menu items like eel rice bowl and grilled freshwater eel were posted, so you could tell at a glance it's an eel specialty restaurant.

99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch started out in 1996 in Bangi-dong, Songpa-gu, and is now run by the second generation. Centered on freshwater eel, they also serve meal dishes like eel rice bowl, fish porridge, and fish soup noodles. I didn't even have to think twice — I came here to eat eel and recharge!

The interior of 99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch has wood-toned tables and warm-colored rattan lighting on the ceiling, which gave it a cozy feel. There were also tables by the floor-to-ceiling windows letting in natural light, so it felt bright. The tables weren't packed too close together, and there were several sized for 4-6 people, so it looked great for a Homaesil work dinner or group gathering. Above all, since eel is a health-boosting food, it seemed like a perfect place for a parent's birthday or Parents' Day meal too!

Self-service corner with side dishes and small plates organized neatly

There was also a neatly organized self-service corner on one side. You could grab extra side dishes or sauces as needed, which was convenient, and small plates and utensils were all lined up tidily. Eel is fun to pair with ginger and side dishes, right? If you run out mid-meal, you can grab more without feeling awkward, which was extra nice for someone like me who likes to wrap generous lettuce bites.

Salt-grilled eel platter, 68,000 won: how to grill pre-cooked eel

Today's feast order: salt-grilled eel platter for 68,000 won and fish soup noodles for 8,000 won. Ta-da~ here comes the main event, the salt-grilled eel! Just looking at a whole platter piled with eel already feels like a proper health boost, right?

It's not even bok-nal and here I am ordering a whole eel platter starting at lunch, hahaha. But what can I do when my body's running on empty,, when you need a boost, you gotta eat properly. Seasoned-grilled probably would've been tasty too, but I wanted to really taste the eel's own savory flavor, so I went with the salt-grilled platter!

The eel comes about 70% pre-cooked, so you don't need to grill it long! There were kind instructions on the table for how to grill it — put the eel on the grill, cook it golden for about 4 minutes, flip it just once, then cook for another 3 minutes or so and you're done! Apparently you only need to cook the cut cross-sections. The key is flipping just once instead of turning it over and over. Since it's already pre-cooked, it's convenient and nice 💗

The outside cooked to a golden, crispy finish while the inside stayed plump and moist!! Since it's salt-grilled, you can really taste the eel's own clean, savory flavor. It's not just rich — the more you chew, the more that distinctive savory eel flavor comes through, and yeah, salt-grilled really is the classic way to eat eel ❤️

The complimentary doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) was also a standout! The spicy, savory broth cleared my palate perfectly, giving me a nice break between bites of eel, which can get a bit rich. One bite of eel, one spoonful of hot stew, and I was ready to go back for more eel, haha. Even as a free side dish, it was hearty and delicious — very satisfying :)

Wow~ look how plump the eel meat is, right? As it cooks, the surface glistens with a light sheen of oil, and the moment the edges turn golden, the smell gets seriously irresistible~

That savory smell wafting through the air~~ the inside was moist and tender, a perfect crispy-outside-tender-inside situation!! The eel was thick, so each bite filled my mouth with texture — very good.

Sauce, shredded ginger and wraps: how to eat the eel

Salt-grilled eel is savory enough on its own, but dipping it in the eel sauce and topping it with shredded ginger brings a whole different charm! The sweet-salty sauce brings out the eel's savory flavor, and the shredded ginger cuts through the richness nicely, so I kept going back for more. A piece of eel topped with ginger, one bite ♥ Eel + sauce + ginger — I can't resist that combo.

And wrapping it in lettuce is even better~ Put a piece of eel on lettuce, pile on chive salad, pickles, and shredded ginger, and pop it in your mouth! The crunchy vegetables paired with the tender, savory eel add so much texture. Eating eel alone for a while can start to feel a bit greasy, but wrapping it with vegetables in between fully refreshes your palate >_<

Piling eel on aged kimchi and pickled perilla leaves with shredded ginger and wasabi was also a totally golden combination!! There were so many different ways to eat the platter that I enjoyed every last piece without getting tired of it.

Lunch-special fish soup noodles, 8,000 won, with hand-torn noodle dough

I'd properly boosted my energy with eel, but of course, being Korean, you need carbs too. So I ordered the hot fish soup noodles as well!

Fish soup noodles served bubbling hot
Thick fish soup broth with dumplings inside

The fish porridge-style dish came out bubbling, with a thick, hearty broth that was savory with a spicy kick — a great hot finish after all that eel. I thought it would just have noodles, but there were also chewy dumplings (sujebi) in it? I slurped up the noodles and fished out the chewy dumplings too, which made it much more filling!

A bite of fish soup noodles topped with kimchi

Adding a piece of kimchi on top made it seriously delicious!! The rich, savory fish soup noodles paired with the crunchy, tangy kimchi really woke up my appetite, and there I was, still using my chopsticks even though I was full, hahaha. The fish soup noodles are normally 10,000 won, but during the lunch special hours of 10 AM to 3 PM they're 8,000 won! Since I visited at lunch, I got to eat it 2,000 won cheaper, which was satisfying. It's this filling, so it's not a big deal to order it as a side to share alongside eel, and I thought it'd even be fine to come just for the fish porridge at lunch on its own :)

Is 99Jangeo88 worth it for a restorative meal in Homaesil, Suwon?

Bok-nal may have passed, but does boosting your health really need a specific date~ I'd been feeling drained and low on energy these past few days, so I came looking for a fix, and after a whole platter of thick salt-grilled freshwater eel, I felt energy surging back 💪 The eel comes pre-cooked so it's easy to grill, and being salt-grilled, I could really taste the eel's clean, savory flavor!! Above all, the atmosphere is great for family meals, so I thought it'd be nice to bring my parents here next time!

If you're looking for a Suwon Homaesil health-food spot, a Suwon boyangsik (health-boosting food) restaurant to take your parents to, or a Homaesil work dinner spot, go get a hearty platter of eel at 99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch ♥ Even after bok-nal, if your body feels run down, eat some eel, okay?
