Staff-grilled eel salt platter at a Suwon Homaesil restaurant

In short

99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch is an eel restaurant in Homaesil-dong, Suwon, run by the second generation since 1996. Ordering the ₩68,000 salt-grilled eel platter for two, staff grilled the 70%-precooked eel for us, and we finished with a cold kimchi noodle dish. With 40 seats and building parking, it's a solid pick for Homaesil gatherings or family meals.

Last time I had a Homaesil family gathering at 99Jangeo88 and remember it being delicious, so this time I went back with my boyfriend!

True to its reputation as a Suwon Homaesil eel restaurant, it was just as good — and having staff grill it for us made things even easier. There's also underground parking, so parking was a breeze.

Location and parking at 99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch

It's located near Homaesil Hwahong Hospital, in the building across from the Megabox building.

For parking, use the building's lot (YJ Plaza)! You need to register at the counter, and 2 hours are covered.

A spacious interior, good for Homaesil gatherings too

Interior seating for 40 at 99Jangeo88

99Jangeo88 has been running since 1996. It's a Suwon Homaesil eel spot where you can taste the second generation's secret techniques and 23 years of eel-only know-how — the kind of place that pretty much guarantees a repeat visit.

Inside, the space is split into an entrance area and an inner area, and it's quite spacious, so it seemed like a good spot for Homaesil work dinners or family meals too. With 40 seats total, we could eat comfortably. I was satisfied when I came here for a family meal too, haha.

Menu, prices, and the lunch special

  • Salt-grilled eel platter ₩68,000
  • All-you-can-eat eel ₩49,000 per person (min. 2 people)
  • Eel rice bowl (regular) ₩29,000
  • Eel rice bowl (large) ₩37,000

There were two of us, so we had the salt-grilled eel platter, but if you're a big eater, the all-you-can-eat option seems worth it too — a reasonable ₩49,000 per person.

Lunch special (weekdays & weekends, 10am–3pm)

  • Eel soup + mini rice bowl ₩16,000
  • Eel soup ₩10,000
  • Eel rice bowl (regular) ₩24,000
  • Eel rice bowl (large) ₩32,000

The lunch special in particular gets you up to a ₩5,000 discount, so I thought I should try the eel rice bowl as a lunch special next time. Looking at other reviews, the eel rice bowl looked really tempting too.

Self bar and two kinds of special sauce

Self bar with lettuce and cabbage kimchi

These days I prefer places with a self bar. They had lettuce and cabbage kimchi too, and it was nice being able to eat as much as I wanted without feeling self-conscious, haha.

Two kinds of special sauce at 99Jangeo88

For sauce, this Suwon eel spot brings out two special house-made sauces. My favorite was the brown one with a nutty aroma.

Salt-grilled platter for 2–3, grilled entirely by staff

70% pre-cooked salt-grilled eel platter on the grill

The eel comes 70% pre-cooked — grill it golden for 4 minutes, flip once, then 3 more minutes and it's ready to eat. There were instructions on how to grill the eel well, and we were about to start grilling ourselves, but a staff member came over and grilled the whole thing for us!!

Golden brown, crispy outside and tender inside — the perfect grilled eel♥️

Golden-brown grilled salt eel

Maybe it's thanks to 23 years of eel expertise, but the eel was really well prepared — crispy, savory, and delicious.

A piece of eel with special sauce, wasabi, and onion

My favorite combo is a bit of wasabi on the special sauce with some onion on top. Eel usually gets rich after a while so you're supposed to eat it with ginger, but even though I can't eat ginger, pairing it with onion, perilla leaves, and wasabi meant I could keep eating happily until I was full, haha.

Complimentary doenjang jjigae served with the meal

On top of that, a cool doenjang jjigae came out as a free side, so there was never a chance to feel too rich, haha. The eel sauce also had a nice aroma and wasn't too salty — just the right flavor.

Finishing with kimchi noodles

Kimchi-mari guksu (cold kimchi noodle soup) was perfect for this weather. With bits of ice floating and plenty of cucumber on top, it was really refreshing — the perfect way to finish the meal.

The noodles had a nice chewy texture, and the slightly sour kimchi was right up my alley!!

True to a Homaesil eel restaurant now in its second generation, the eel was well prepared and the special sauce was delicious, so I felt like I'd had proper, real eel at 99Jangeo88 in Homaesil. The interior is spacious and there's parking too, so it's also a good spot for Homaesil gatherings. A satisfying repeat-visit review, done.
