Lately I've been thinking about dinner and more and more often just ending up buying side dishes from outside instead of cooking.

Making soup every day plus three or four side dishes takes up way more time than you'd think, and honestly some of the dishes I make end up barely touched anyway. Cooking takes forever and I'm definitely not blessed with skilled hands — total kitchen disaster over here ㅜㅜㅡㅜㅜ

So these days whenever I find a banchan (side dish) shop that looks decent, I just go check it out — and this time I visited Gukaechan Banchan Gwanggyo Main Store (국애찬) in Gwanggyo, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon~~~!!!

Is parking easy at Gukaechan in Gwanggyo, Suwon?

Gukaechan Main Store offers parking assistance. Honestly, before going, I was a little worried about the narrow alleys and parking hassle that side dish shops usually have, but once I got there, I felt a lot more at ease knowing they support parking. The lot is spacious too, so even beginner drivers can park comfortably.

Every time I go to a banchan shop, hunting for a parking spot is oddly stressful. Here, zero stress — parking is totally doable~~~!!!!!!

With that one thing solved, visiting definitely felt like less of a hassle. Gukaechan is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Closed every Sunday, so keep that in mind~~~~~~~~!!!

Three side dishes picked at Gukaechan Gwanggyo Main Store

What I picked at Gukaechan Main Store were yukjeon, jeyuk bokkeum, and quail egg jorim. Walking in, the selection of displayed side dishes was way more varied than I expected — enough that I paused for a moment trying to decide.

After browsing around, I ended up reaching for these three: yukjeon, jeyuk bokkeum, and quail egg jorim.

I think I mostly picked dishes I don't usually make at home.

Yukjeon especially is a dish that takes a lot of effort at home — the oil smell, the cleanup afterward — so I figured buying it ready-made was way more efficient.

How did the Gukaechan side dishes taste at home?

Gukaechan's side dishes weren't overly seasoned — they tasted close to homemade food. I brought them home and put them straight on the table, and honestly, I was a little surprised after tasting.

Side dish shop food, made in bulk as it usually is, tends to be over-seasoned or lose flavor after sitting for a while, right?ㅜㅜㅜㅜㅜㅜㅜ

But here there was none of that feeling at all!!!!! It was pretty much perfect, haha ㅎㅎㅎ

The yukjeon was slightly crisp on the outside and cooked moist and tender on the inside, and the egg coating was thin rather than thick, so it wasn't greasy.

The jeyuk bokkeum stayed true to the classic spicy-sweet flavor without being too harsh — just the right balance — and the cut of meat wasn't dry, so the texture was good to chew.

The quail egg jorim wasn't salty, with a gentle hint of sweetness soaked in — exactly the kind of side dish that makes you finish a whole bowl of rice.

After trying all three, "this is really good" just came out naturally.

I'd say you could feel the care put into each side dish.

It didn't taste like your typical side dish shop food — it had that homemade touch, which made it even more satisfying.

It made me want to try their other menu items one by one next time.
