Hwial Ajou University Branch is really popular with Ajou University students! How do I know? The friend I went with is a nurse at Ajou University Hospital, and she said it's always packed with students whenever she goes, haha.
Since students go there so often, the value for money is great and the food is all delicious. The fried dishes especially stood out, so now I'm curious about their other fried options too, haha.
Partitioned sofa seats: a date spot near Ajou University
Every seat at Hwial Ajou University Branch is a sofa, so it's comfortable, and since they're divided by partitions I didn't have to worry about the table next to me. It has a private feel, which makes it a great date spot near Ajou University.
This is the salted popcorn that comes out as a basic side snack. It goes so well with beer, and it gave off that classic university-district bar vibe, which made it taste even better.
Ube draft beer and matcha draft beer, 5,500 won each
We ordered the ube draft beer and matcha draft beer (₩5,500 each)! They're a bit sweeter than regular draft beer, with the ube and matcha flavors coming through subtly, so it almost felt like drinking a highball. These are special drinks you can only get at Hwial, a bar near Ajou University, so I recommend them.
Mala cream shrimp, 20,000 won: the best fried dish I've had
This is the mala cream shrimp that blew me away. It costs ₩20,000. The portion is huge for the price, honestly, haha. I think I'd buy it even at ₩30,000... This is a real Suwon must-visit... I'll give it the #1 spot among every fried dish I've ever had 👍
Honestly I'm such a picky eater when it comes to mala that I basically never eat mala tang, lol. I was curious about the mala-plus-cream shrimp combo so I ordered it, and it turned out sweet and savory with a mild mala kick, the kind of thing anyone would like regardless of preference.
I really want to know their batter recipe... it's on a totally different level from anywhere else, ugh. It was seriously delicious. Apparently their yurinki is famous too. People who've tried it say they order it forever afterward, since the trust in their frying skills goes way up, lol. Next time I'm coming back for the yurinki.
The shrimp inside were plump too, not skimpy at all. A cabbage salad comes on the side, which pairs with the fried shrimp to prevent you from getting sick of it — a great combination. Among the bars I've been to near Ajou University, this one's my top pick, haha.
There's also fried onion underneath, kind of like that boiling onion trend from a while back, except even better than that. I guess everything they fry here just turns out delicious...! Highly recommend this as a bar near Ajou University in Suwon!!!
Pollack roe cream jjamppong, 23,000 won: best once the sauce reduces
This is the pomfret roe cream jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup). It costs ₩23,000. The mala cream shrimp was so good it overshadowed it a bit, but the jjamppong is excellent too.
They put it on the burner and let it simmer, so I'd recommend enjoying the other dishes first and eating this once it's reduced down a bit. The broth gets thick and rich, and that's when it's tastiest, haha.
Inside there's clams, squid, blue crab, bok choy, enoki mushrooms and all sorts of other jjamppong ingredients, plus chewy noodles. There were especially a lot of clams 🫶
The ube draft beer and matcha draft beer paired really well with the side dishes too. If you're curious, don't hesitate — just order them!
Smoking zone and waiting area at Hwial
The smoking zone at Hwial Ajou University Branch is outside, set up as a booth.
If you come during peak hours you might have to wait a bit, but there's a separate waiting area! It's a non-smoking zone, so it stays pleasant.
