Family meal with kids at Mansuheon Jeongja, a Seongnam eel restaurant

In short

Mansuheon Jeongja is a charcoal-grilled eel restaurant near Jeongja Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. The writer visited with a child for a meal of pre-grilled, low-temperature-aged Japonica charcoal eel in salt-grilled and seasoned versions, paired with Jirisan doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and Koshihikari rice, all cooked ahead in an open kitchen so the table stayed smoke-free. Between the pollack roe potato salad and the seaweed set aside just for the child, this made for a genuinely warm family dinner.

The weather's been so unpredictable lately that I found myself craving something hearty to build up my stamina.

So I went looking for a charcoal-grilled eel place where I could eat cleanly, and ended up at Mansuheon Jeongja near Jeongja Station.

Parking was super easy right inside the building, which was a great start.

A place good for bringing your parents or someone special

It's a place good for bringing your parents, and also good for visiting with someone dear to you.

You can feel that calm atmosphere from the entrance, right?

Once inside, the interior — stone and wood tones blending naturally — is really neat and upscale.

There's a stability to the space itself that let me focus comfortably on the meal.

Watching the eel get pre-grilled in the open kitchen

What's special about this place is the open kitchen, so you can actually watch the eel being carefully pre-grilled over charcoal. Seeing the cooking process so transparently made the atmosphere even better and really boosted my trust in the food.

Once we sat down, they brought out warm tea in a pretty pot. It warmed us up before the meal, and sipping it between bites of eel cleaned the palate completely — it paired wonderfully with the food.

A clean table setting and thoughtful care

Before the main dishes arrived, the side dishes were set out first.

Taking one bite, I was really satisfied — there wasn't a hint of that heavy, MSG-like aftertaste. I'm cautiously guessing the seasoned lettuce salad wasn't made with store-bought sauce, haha.

Of everything, what really won me over was this potato salad topped with pollack roe (myeongnan) sauce! The nutty potato with the salty, popping pollack roe sauce was such an unusual and delicious combination. I thought I should try making this at home too.

Seaweed served to eat with the child's rice

I visited with my child, and they were kind enough to bring out separate seaweed for feeding the kid. That kind of thoughtful, warm care made my heart glow throughout the meal.

I took a photo of the menu. There's a good-value eel rice bowl (eel deopbap) at lunch that I'd love to try next time.

We ordered one serving each of salt-grilled and seasoned low-temperature-aged Japonica charcoal eel, evenly split. We also added the essential Jirisan doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and two servings of Koshihikari rice.

As I mentioned, since the eel comes pre-grilled, there's no need to worry about smoke or smell at the table — you can just dig in comfortably right away, which was great.

The eel flesh was so plump and tender, and mixing it with the neat side dishes in different combinations, there wasn't a hint of the greasy feeling eel can sometimes have — I never got tired of it even by the end.

Add a spoonful of the deep, savory Jirisan doenjang stew, then a bite of glossy, sweet Koshihikari rice, and it truly completed the meal!

Would I go back?

With the atmosphere of the space, the taste of the food, and the warm service all coming together, I'd say I'm 200% likely to return.

If you're looking for a clean, healing meal, definitely give Mansuheon Jeongja a visit 🤍
