It had been a while since I wandered around Yeonnam-dong. I finished up work in the morning and was heading home, but decided to swing by for lunch and maybe check out a bakery too.

While looking for somewhere to have a relaxed brunch lunch in Yeonnam-dong, I ended up at Hippo Brunch House, a brunch café that's been getting hot lately.

Yeonnam-dong has so many pretty cafés and good restaurants, but when you actually need to pick a spot for a group meetup, you end up weighing not just the food but the vibe, the seating, and how easy it is to get to.

Fall is gathering season, haha... so I dropped by this brunch café as a bit of a scouting trip.
Lately a lot of people are looking for spots in Yeonnam-dong for wedding invitation meetups with a friend who's about to get married, casual friend hangouts around Yeonnam-dong, or meetups near Hongdae.

With that in mind, Hippo Brunch House caught my eye — you can enjoy brunch, pasta, and coffee all in one place, and it's dog-friendly too.

What I ordered that day was truffle cream soup + Brunch All The Way.

What kind of place is Hippo Brunch House? (Seongmisan-ro 17-gil, Yeonnam-dong)
Hippo Brunch House is a brunch café in Yeonnam-dong, located at 85 Seongmisan-ro 17-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul.

It's a dog-friendly café in Yeonnam-dong where you can enjoy brunch, coffee, wine and French toast.

So it's a great fit when you're looking for a proper brunch spot rather than just a regular café.

Looking for a wedding-invitation gathering spot in Yeonnam-dong
These days, when friends meet up, they'd rather have a proper meal together while chatting than just drink coffee at a café.

Especially if a friend is getting married, a natural occasion comes up to hand over the wedding invitation over a meal. What matters then is: not-too-loud atmosphere + food menu + café menu + a space that's good for talking.

So if you're looking for a spot for a Yeonnam-dong or Hongdae wedding invitation meetup, choosing a brunch café is a good move. Hippo Brunch House offers not just brunch but pasta, salad, waffles and French toast, so everyone can pick what they feel like eating.

Truffle cream soup and Brunch All The Way
First up: the truffle cream soup
I wanted a warm soup alongside brunch, so I ordered the truffle cream soup.

Having soup alongside brunch makes the start of the meal feel a little softer. The cream soup especially pairs well with bread and brunch dishes, so it's good for sharing as a side when you're visiting with a group.

If you like the distinct aroma of truffle, it's worth pairing with the brunch dish.
Brunch All The Way, the signature plate at Hippo Brunch House, 21,800 won
And the dish I was most looking forward to that day was Brunch All The Way.

It's Hippo Brunch House's signature menu item. Priced at ₩21,800, it's meant to be shared by two. True to the name 'All The Way,' it's a great pick when you want to properly enjoy brunch all at once. At a brunch café,

you're always torn between salad, bread, or eggs — a brunch platter like this is appealing because you get to enjoy several dishes on one plate.

Why Hippo Brunch House works if you want good brunch in Yeonnam-dong
What I like about brunch cafés is that there's no strict line between breakfast and lunch.

You can meet late in the morning, or have a proper lunch, and finish with coffee all in the same spot. Hippo Brunch House also has a wide menu range beyond brunch — pasta, salad, French toast, waffles.

So it seemed like a menu lineup that could satisfy anyone looking for a good restaurant, a café, or pasta in Yeonnam-dong all at once.

Terrace seating and the café atmosphere in Yeonnam-dong
On nice-weather days, you want to enjoy the outdoor atmosphere rather than staying inside. Yeonnam-dong especially is a neighborhood where it's fun to wander the alleys looking for cafés and restaurants, so a lot of people prefer places with a terrace.
Hippo Brunch House is listed as having an outdoor terrace space in addition to the indoor seating, so it's worth a look for anyone seeking a Yeonnam-dong terrace café on a nice day. That said, whether the outdoor seats are open can vary depending on weather and the situation on site, so it's best to check before visiting.
For anyone searching for a dog-friendly restaurant in Yeonnam-dong
Another feature of Hippo Brunch House is that pets are welcome. As a dog-friendly café in Yeonnam-dong, it's nice to be able to eat comfortably. Going out with your dog makes finding somewhere to eat tricky to begin with, so this can be one option for anyone searching for a dog-friendly restaurant in Yeonnam-dong. That said, it's most accurate to check with the store beforehand about which seats or the terrace are available for pets.
Why a brunch café suits a Yeonnam-dong friends' gathering
For a wedding invitation meetup, people often prefer a place that's comfortable but still has a nice atmosphere, rather than somewhere too formal. Brunch cafés have an edge here.
- First, the menu choices are easy — you can pick from brunch, pasta, salad, and dessert depending on what you're in the mood for.
- Second, it's good for eating while chatting — food doesn't come out course by course quickly, so you can eat leisurely while talking.
- Third, meal and café in one — you don't need to move to another café after the meetup; you can handle both food and coffee in one space.
So if you're looking for a spot for a Yeonnam-dong or Hongdae friend gathering, a brunch café is worth adding to the shortlist.
If you also want pasta in Yeonnam-dong
Hippo Brunch House has pasta dishes as well as brunch — spicy aglio e olio, beef ragu pasta, basil cream paccheri, and more — so pasta lovers and brunch lovers can visit together and both find something to order.
So in a friend group, it's a plus that everyone can order what they like — 'I'll have brunch,' 'I'll have pasta.'
Is Hippo Brunch House a Blue Ribbon pick in Yeonnam-dong?
If you search for good restaurants in Yeonnam-dong, you'll notice Hippo Brunch House has been selected as a Blue Ribbon–recognized spot, haha. It's a place where the distinctive interior and varied menu really stimulate both the eyes and the palate, haha.
Searching for a Hongdae brunch café and ending up in Yeonnam-dong
Yeonnam-dong is an easy walk from Hongdae, and with restaurants and cafés packed into its alleys, it's a great neighborhood for a full day out. So if you're looking for a Hongdae brunch café, I'd recommend widening your search to include Yeonnam-dong.
Especially for something like a wedding invitation meetup, if your plan is to stroll around or hit another café afterward rather than just eating and splitting up, Yeonnam-dong itself becomes a whole date course.
The Hippo Brunch House menu at a glance
What I had was the truffle cream soup and Brunch All The Way. Beyond that, the menu currently includes
- Seasonal fruit French toast
- Basil cream paccheri
- Beef ragu pasta
- Avocado open sandwich
- Salmon avocado salad
- Burrata fruit salad
- Spicy aglio e olio
- Waffle menu
so there's a wide range of options from brunch to full meals to dessert.
Verdict: who Hippo Brunch House is best for
Hippo Brunch House left me with the memory of a place good for enjoying a relaxed brunch while chatting. My combination of truffle cream soup + Brunch All The Way made for a filling meal, and with pasta, salad and French toast also on the menu beyond brunch, it's a solid setup for visiting with a group.

Above all, since pets are welcome, it's worth noting for anyone looking for a dog-friendly restaurant in Yeonnam-dong, and on a nice day, the terrace is a lovely place to spend some relaxed time and enjoy that Yeonnam-dong terrace café feel. So I'd recommend this to:
