Seongsu restaurant for three comfort dishes with kids: Seongsu Darak

In short

Seongsu Darak is a home-style Italian restaurant in Seongdong, Seoul. After exploring Seongsu pop-ups, we ordered rose pasta, omurice, and spicy crab risotto for 55,000 won; there was still a wait at 1 pm on a weekday. Verdict: A comfortable choice for a family meal or casual brunch date.

I went to Seongsu with the kids to enjoy the pop-ups. After checking out the trendy pop-ups, we were getting a little hungry, so we found Seongsu Darak, a well-known Seongsu restaurant. It is famous for its lines, but the food has a gentle, home-style feel rather than being overly intense, so we had a delicious meal.

Seongsu Darak After Seongsu Pop-Ups

It had been a while since I visited Seongsu on a weekday, and there were so many people that I thought, Is this really Korea? Haha. We stopped by the Häagen-Dazs pop-up and looked around a cosmetics pop-up, then started feeling hungry, so Seongsu Darak was where we headed. We came hoping to enjoy a tasty meal after browsing the pop-ups in Seongsu.

Getting to Seongsu Darak

It is about 600 m from Exit 3 of Seongsu Station, or roughly a 7-minute walk.

When we first went there, we could not find the restaurant entrance and found ourselves looking around.

A Wait Even on a Weekday Afternoon

We followed the people going in and opened the door, only to be surprised by a long line stretching up the stairs. Just as people say, it really is a popular Seongsu restaurant, haha. We went around 1 pm, after peak time, but the line was still long. If we had come during lunch hours, we might have waited a long time~ haha.

Ordering While You Wait

While we stood in line, they gave us a menu and took our order in advance.

So we did not deliberate and ordered the best-selling dishes. After waiting about 10 minutes, a table opened up and it was our turn to go in~^^ Inside, there were dining rooms on the second and third floors. We were shown upstairs to the third floor.

Third floor

The third floor mostly had tables for four, and it felt a little more spacious than the second floor. The floor had a tile pattern, and long cushioned seats ran along the windows.

Tables and chairs were arranged toward the front, with people seated by the windows, and the sunlight was so lovely. It felt cozy.

Over by one side of the window, I spotted photos and merchandise from The Boyz. At this point, the owner must be a fan, right? Haha. Overall, it felt simple and comfortable rather than lavishly decorated.

For a family visit, it seemed like a cozy, comfortable place to eat. It might feel a little busy for a date, but it has Seongsu’s signature casual, simple atmosphere, so it looked nice for a light meal.

Seongsu Darak Menu and Prices

The three of us visited and ordered mostly best-selling dishes.

  • Darak Omurice — ₩17,000
  • Darak Rose Pasta — ₩19,000
  • Spicy Crab Risotto — ₩19,000

The three dishes came to ₩55,000. Since we had ordered ahead, the food came out quickly once we sat down. Still, it looked like it was just a little short of enough for my son, haha. If you visit with a group, you may want to add another dish depending on how much everyone eats.

What Does Darak Rose Pasta Taste Like?

First up was the Darak Rose Pasta.

Rose pasta topped with house-made meat sauce and whipped cream

Pasta noodles were topped with house-made meat sauce, sweet whipped cream, and Grana Padano cheese. Such an unusual look, right? It looked delicious just sitting there, haha.

Once we mixed the pasta together, it was spicy yet creamy and delicious. Even though it was rose pasta, it was not too heavy or rich, so I kept reaching for it.

Soft Darak Omurice

An omelet sat on top of fried rice.

When we made a quick cut across the top of the egg,

the round omelet spread right open to reveal its soft center. It made me want to take a spoonful immediately.

Omurice with egg and fried rice

There was fried rice underneath, so having a bite with the egg and sauce reminded me of hayashi rice curry. How can they cook eggs this soft and delicious? Haha. This was the dish my son was especially impressed by.

If you visit with children, the omurice seems like an easy dish they would enjoy, so it would work well for a family meal too.

Spicy Risotto with Crab Leg Meat

The risotto arrived on a plate topped with a crab leg and egg yolk, haha.

They say it is flavored with vegetables stir-fried in chili oil and crab meat. The aroma of crab was subtle, and my daughter, who loves crab flavor, really liked it. She especially said the crab leg meat was easy to take out and eat~ haha. Once we broke the egg yolk and mixed it in, the risotto became a little softer and nuttier.

It was a whole crab leg rather than loose crab meat, so I briefly wondered how to eat it. But if you fit the small leg at the back into it and push it straight through, the crab meat slips out neatly, haha. Eating it with the risotto lets you enjoy the crab flavor and texture just as they are, which was so delicious.

Most risottos are creamy, so I worried it might become rich, but the Spicy Crab Risotto had a pleasantly spicy kick. I could enjoy it without getting tired of it the whole time.

Three Dishes We Had with the Kids

That day, I tried the Darak Omurice, Darak Rose Pasta, and Spicy Crab Risotto with the kids.

Three dishes: omurice, pasta, and risotto

The dishes were not overly rich, and they were tasty in a comfortable, home-style Italian way. Each dish had a slightly different flavor and look, so it was fun to try all three together. It did seem just a little short for my son with three people eating, but it was fine for a light meal.

Most of all, browsing the pop-ups in Seongsu and then having delicious food made for a perfect day out. If you are looking for somewhere to eat after enjoying Seongsu pop-ups, try the pasta, omurice, and risotto together at Seongsu Darak. It was a nice place for a cozy family meal, or for a casual brunch or date in Seongsu.
