Kid-friendly family lunch in Daegu, gondre rice in gim: Hyangtaek
In short
Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is a fusion Korean rice bowl and bibimbap restaurant near Gyeongbuk University Hospital Station and Kim Kwang-seok Street in Jung-gu, Daegu. On a late weekend lunch with family, the order was mackerel gondre rice (samchi gondrebap), eggplant doenjang rice bowl and pollock mulhoe yukhoe, and the mild mackerel gondre rice served with gopchang gim (thin crisp seaweed sheets) to wrap was a big hit with the child. Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is worth recommending for families after an easy, gentle meal out.

A review after finally visiting Hyangtaek, a distinctive, health-focused rice place I'd had my eye on for a while.

Where to park at Hyangtaek Daebong Branch in Daegu
At lunchtime, about 2 cars can park right in front of the restaurant. If it's full, the nearby Kim Kwang-seok Street public parking lot offers 1 hour 10 minutes free. Since the spots out front were all taken, we parked in a suitable spot on a nearby side street and walked over.

Inside Hyangtaek Daebong Branch: atmosphere and weekend wait near Gyeongbuk University Hospital Station
Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is located near Gyeongbuk Uni Hospital Station. The interior has a calm, wood-toned look that feels comfortable. The space isn't huge, but turnover is quick.

We visited a bit late for weekend lunch and got in with no wait. Customers kept streaming in while we ate, so the place stayed fully seated.

Hyangtaek Daebong Branch menu and the three dishes ordered
The menu is centered on neat, fusion Korean rice bowls and bibimbap that are easy to eat as a single-bowl meal. Also an easy spot to visit solo without feeling awkward eating alone.

We ordered three dishes: mackerel gondre rice, eggplant doenjang rice bowl, and pollock mulhoe yukhoe.

The basic side dishes are one each of mixed seafood jeotgal, pickled gungchae (stem lettuce), and broth, plus a special sauce and gopchang gim (seaweed sheets) that come with each dish.

Mackerel gondre rice: the dish the child ate up, wrapped in gopchang gim
Mackerel gondre rice comes with a large piece of mackerel sitting on top of a generous mix of gondre (dried aster greens), mushrooms, scallion, and sesame seeds, meant to be mixed together before eating. The mackerel was moist and tender, pairing well with the gondre for a mild, nutty flavor.

Since it wasn't strongly seasoned, we ordered it as our kid's meal, and once we wrapped it in the crispy gopchang gim, she ate it really well.

Eggplant doenjang rice bowl: thick doenjang-style sauce hidden under the rice
The eggplant doenjang rice bowl has moist, grilled eggplant with a generous amount of ganjang-doenjang-style (thick soybean paste) seasoning hidden underneath. The salty, savory doenjang sauce soaks into what could otherwise be a bland eggplant, and the combination worked really well — we enjoyed it a lot.

Pollock mulhoe yukhoe: one cool bowl between the warm rice dishes
Pollock mulhoe yukhoe comes generously topped with fresh raw beef yukhoe and raw pollock sashimi, plus plenty of crunchy vegetables.

The moment you take a bite, your whole mouth goes cool and tangy — such a refreshing feeling!

The chewy, springy texture of the raw pollock especially seemed to elevate the mulhoe's flavor even more~ Slipping in one cool dish between the warm, mild rice bowls was a great move.

Is Hyangtaek Daebong Branch a good family restaurant in Daegu?
Overall, the food wasn't strongly seasoned, leaning mild, with each ingredient's flavors coming together really well for a healthy meal. Great for adult tastes, and since our kid ate so happily wrapping it in gim, it's a perfect spot for a family meal out. Neat, easy-on-the-stomach fusion Korean food — recommending this Kim Kwang-seok Street rice place, Hyangtaek :)
