Korean restaurant with a spice-shy friend: galbi hot pot at Hanok

In short

Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi is a mulgalbi (spicy braised rib hot pot) and galbi hot pot restaurant on Dongmun-gil in Pungnam-dong, Jeonju. Two friends — one who can't handle spicy food and one who loves a fiery broth — shared the galbi hot pot and yukjeon (pan-fried beef) set, and both enjoyed the broth because it wasn't a capsaicin-style heat. With its own parking lot and a spice level that suits mixed groups, Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi is a solid, stress-free pick for a filling meal in Jeonju.

One of the must-try dishes when planning a Jeonju trip is mulgalbi (spicy braised rib hot pot) — a fiery broth paired with tender meat.

The alleys around Hanok Village are narrow and always crowded, so parking stress is real. This time I looked for a place I could drive to comfortably, with a clean, spacious interior as a priority. That's how I found Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi, which has plenty of parking and pleasant facilities.

Parking and the atmosphere at Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi

Usually when you're doing a food tour around Jeonju Hanok Village, you end up parking far away at a public lot and walking a long way because of the parking situation. Here, there's a generous private parking lot, so I could park easily right when I arrived.

That's a real plus for families or couples treating this as a drive-and-dine date spot.

Walking inside, the ceilings weren't cramped and the tables were spaced out nicely, giving it a pleasant feel. There was none of the smoke or oil smell typical of barbecue places — it was kept very clean, making it a solid choice as a Jeonju date restaurant.

Ordering the galbi hot pot and yukjeon set, plus the banchan

Looking at the menu, there was a set combining the galbi hot pot with yukjeon (pan-fried beef), a great pairing, so I ordered the set without hesitation.

Instead of ordering the two popular items separately, this set let us try both in one go at a good value — I loved that.

After ordering, the basic banchan (side dishes) arrived, neatly arranged. The kimchi and namul (seasoned vegetables) weren't overly seasoned or harsh, which was a nice way to whet the appetite before the main dish, and the tidy presentation showed the care you'd expect from a proper Korean restaurant in Jeonju Hanok Village.

How spicy is it, really? Testing it with a spice-shy friend

As the broth started boiling, the bean sprouts wilted down and the meat began soaking up the seasoning. I was curious how the spice level would land, since one friend with us is a self-proclaimed 'spice weakling' while the other loves a sharp, fiery broth.

After one spoonful, it wasn't an artificial capsaicin-style heat — the vegetable and meat stock came together for a clean yet deep, savory-spicy flavor.

My spice-shy friend said it wasn't a harsh burning kind of spicy and ate it without any trouble, while my other friend, who loves fiery flavors, said the broth was refreshing and satisfying — both of them ended up happy, no complaints from either side.

The rib meat, bean sprouts, and glass noodles

The ribs were cooked until the meat fell off the bone easily, tender and with no gamey smell at all. The texture combo of the crunchy bean sprouts with the chewy ribs together was excellent. The glass noodles, having soaked up the rich, spicy-savory broth, were also a real treat.

How was the yukjeon in the set?

The yukjeon that came with the set also exceeded expectations. Thin, golden-fried egg batter coated tender beef cooked through and moist inside — not greasy at all, with a light yet savory, nutty flavor.

Taking a spoonful of the sharp, fiery galbi hot pot broth followed by a bite of the light yukjeon made for a perfectly balanced meal.

The galbi hot pot and yukjeon set combo is, I think, the winning order you have to get here.

Wrap-up

Convenient private parking with no stress, a pleasant and clean interior, and a solid set menu that lets you enjoy both the galbi hot pot and the light yukjeon in one visit — overall, a very satisfying spot.

If you're traveling in Jeonju and want a filling meal without worrying about spice level, I'd recommend stopping by Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi, a mulgalbi specialist in Pungnam-dong, Jeonju.
