There's so much good street food when you visit Jeonju Hanok Village, right? Half the fun of exploring the village is snacking on this and that along the way. This time I went to try one of the most famous street foods in the area — octopus skewers.

This is Munkkocchi (문꼬치). If you go looking for octopus skewers as a Jeonju Hanok Village food, this is a place that pops up a lot, so I was curious — and after trying it myself, I get why the octopus skewers here are so famous.

What we ordered at Munkkocchi in Jeonju Hanok Village

At Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch, we ordered three things: an octopus skewer, a chicken skewer, and sikhye. For the chicken skewer, we went with the cheese chicken skewer.

So our order was octopus skewer, chicken skewer, and sikhye — three items total. They sell chicken skewers as well as octopus skewers, so it was easy to pick based on your mood. There's also a cheese add-on option, so this time I ordered the chicken skewer as a cheese chicken skewer.

How spicy is the spicy option at Munkkocchi?

Munkkocchi's octopus and chicken skewers can be ordered mild or spicy, and even ordering both spicy, it wasn't numbing at all. It was gently spicy — easy to eat without any pressure.

I liked that both the octopus and chicken skewers let you choose mild or spicy. I picked spicy for both, and it wasn't an intense, mouth-numbing spice — just a gentle kick, so I could enjoy it easily.

If you're looking for octopus skewers as a Jeonju Hanok Village food, I'd say it's worth trying the spicy version too. The chewy texture of the octopus with a hint of spicy seasoning made it a flavor you keep reaching for.

Chewy octopus skewer plus a cheese chicken skewer

As the main item, Munkkocchi's octopus skewer had plump, chewy octopus. The kitchen is visible from outside and looked very clean, so there was nothing to worry about even though it's street food.

The octopus skewer had that great chewy texture you'd expect from the main menu item. And the kitchen was clearly visible from outside — it was so clean! You didn't need to worry just because it's street food.

I thought it would just be a simple bite to eat while passing by, but the octopus was more substantial and chewier than expected, making it a pretty filling snack too. There's a cheese option as well, so next time I want to try the cheese octopus skewer.

Watching the cheese stretch out, I could tell they use pretty good cheese, and octopus with cheese seemed like it would pair really well.

What I ate was the cheese chicken skewer, and it was really delicious too. There was a generous amount of cheese piled on top of the chicken skewer, stretching out in long strings — it looked amazing before I even took a bite. I also ordered this spicy, and the gentle heat combined with the savory cheese was a great match. Even labeled spicy, it wasn't too intense, so it was easy to eat without any pressure.

Air-conditioned seats you can actually sit down in

Munkkocchi has seats set up where you can sit and eat, and they run air conditioning and fans. After a long walk around Jeonju Hanok Village, hot and with tired legs, it was the perfect spot to rest for a bit.

Honestly, the hardest part of walking around Jeonju Hanok Village this time was less about the food and more about the heat and sore legs. After walking around the village for so long, I was so hot and my legs hurt so much that eating standing up would've been rough. But here there were seats to sit and eat, which was really great. Sitting down for a bit to eat while out and about in the hot weather felt like a lifesaver.

They also had the air conditioner and fans running, so I could eat while cooling off comfortably. For anyone like me who isn't a fan of eating standing up, or anyone whose legs are aching from walking around Jeonju Hanok Village for a long time, a space like this would be a very welcome sight. Most Jeonju Hanok Village food has this image of being a quick bite while walking around, but being able to sit down and rest for a bit like this feels like a surprisingly big perk, on top of the food being tasty.

Sikhye on the side: the right drink with spicy skewers

Munkkocchi also sells drinks alongside the skewers, so we ordered sikhye (sweet rice drink) too. After eating the spicy skewers, a sip of cool sikhye cleaned up the palate.

Eating just the skewers can leave you a little thirsty, so we ordered sikhye as a drink too. Sweet, cool sikhye really does suit this kind of street food. After eating a spicy skewer, one sip of sikhye and my mouth felt refreshed — I was glad we ordered it. Along with the octopus and chicken skewers, they also sell drinks, making it a nice setup for a simple snack break.

Octopus skewer or chicken skewer: which to pick at Munkkocchi?

If you're torn between octopus skewer and chicken skewer while looking for Jeonju Hanok Village food, I'd recommend ordering both and sharing. I liked the octopus skewer, but the cheese chicken skewer was surprisingly delicious too, so it felt like a shame to pick just one.

Since you can add cheese — like the cheese octopus skewer and cheese chicken skewer — and also choose mild or spicy, you can order to match your mood or taste that day.
