Dongmun Market for the end of a Jeju trip

On the day I was heading home from Jeju, there was one place I couldn't skip! Jeju Dongmun Market.

From the currently popular geobugi-bap to gireum-tteok (oil rice cakes)!! The gireum-tteok was sweet and seriously delicious 👏🏻 All of Jeju's hottest foods and souvenirs are gathered here.

There are so many tasty things to eat that it is a feast for the eyes too, and lots of shops are generous with samples! Personally, I don't usually love tourist-market type places, but Dongmun Market is fun and feels like such a warm, generous market—just walking around makes you full. I make sure to visit before going to the airport every time I come to Jeju. An essential Jeju itinerary stop!

The generous samples that stopped me in my tracks

I was passing through Dongmun Market when the generous samples stopped me in my tracks. The owner cuts the products right there for sampling and tells you to try all the different flavors too!! They let you sample so freely—what is this generosity? ✨ It was great to try everything from oranda to gwajul (a traditional puffed rice snack).

Cheongchuni Oranda says its handmade traditional sweets are roasted directly with jocheong rice syrup rather than sugar.

Soft, moist oranda full of yuzu fragrance

There are five oranda flavors: yuzu (yuzu preserve and tangerine chips), maneul (garlic and garlic butter), nut (peanuts, almonds, black sesame, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds), gamtae, and Udo peanut. Of course, I sampled the oranda too.

Store-bought oranda snacks are usually very crunchy, right? But Cheongchuni Oranda's oranda is all about being moist, fluffy, and soft. I liked that it did not stick to my teeth, and there were so many flavors. The yuzu one I had was absolutely delicious, full of yuzu fragrance.

Donut oranda and puffed gwajul

Along with regular oranda, they also sold donut oranda and yuzu gwajul. The donut oranda really was a donut in every way! There were so many flavors—coconut, cookies and cream, black sesame, yellow cheese, chocolate, tangerine chip, green tea, peanut, carrot chocolate, and strawberry—and each was individually wrapped, so they would make great gifts too 🎁

Gwajul is a Korean word for a traditional snack made by frying a dough of glutinous rice flour and coating it in rice crumbs. At Cheongchuni Oranda, there are buckwheat, brown rice, steamed rice, and white-rice puffed gwajul.

Gift sets were ready to go, and they also sold good-value bulk packs.

Dividing bulk gwajul into gifts for people I know

After sampling them and finding them so delicious, I headed home with gwajul for snacks and gifts 🛍️

When you think of oranda, you expect it to be incredibly sweet, right? But the gwajul was not sweet at all, which I loved so, so much.

Moist yet crisp... it is clearly a texture genius! My mom enjoyed it too because it does not stick to your teeth, and the more you chew, the more addictive its nutty flavor and gentle sweetness become. Best of all, the puffed rice stuck on top of the gwajul was ridiculously delicious..!

I simply left it at room temperature and ate it 3 to 4 days later, and it had not gone soggy at all, which was so nice. For reference, the shelf life is 14 days at room temperature, and they said it can be kept a little longer when refrigerated.

The puffed rice also comes in buckwheat, brown rice, white rice, and steamed rice, which makes tasting them even more fun... 💗 I bought a bulk pack, so there was a lot; I bought packaging bags at Daiso and...

I gave them to people around me too, and they were the best easy, good-value gifts. My friend and my friend's parents all said they enjoyed them. Cheongchuni Oranda is the best for Jeju Dongmun Market gifts 🛍️💗👏🏻
