Noryangjin sashimi shop live shrimp prep and outdoor seats: Ttangkkeut

In short

Ttangkkeut Maeul is a sashimi shop on the 1st floor of Noryangjin Fish Market in Dongjak, Seoul. Reserved by phone for 5pm on a Saturday, a medium premium sashimi platter cost 100,000 won, and because Ttangkkeut Maeul does not sell live shrimp, the owner pointed the way next door, where the shrimp was cheaper. The platter, the shrimp and a closing spicy fish stew were all eaten at the outdoor seats of Hwanggeumeojang, the 2nd-floor dipping-sauce restaurant, and the thick-cut fish stacked two layers deep made it a completely satisfying meal.

Where do you all go for sashimi?! I used to buy it from a place near my house, but I was always a bit disappointed. So this time I decided to head to Noryangjin Fish Market!!

Where is Ttangkkeut Maeul in Noryangjin Fish Market, and what does it cost?

Booking Ttangkkeut Maeul by phone for 5pm on a Saturday

Ttangkkeut Maeul sits right on a main aisle inside Noryangjin Fish Market, so even a first-timer could find it easily. This was my first time at Noryangjin and it was overwhelming with all the people, but the signage was clear and the shop was right on the main path, so I got there quickly!!

I'd called ahead to reserve, so I didn't wander around and went straight to the shop!! I'd booked for Saturday at 5pm, and even though it was a bit before dinnertime, the place was already packed!! It was noticeably busier than other shops nearby, which got me excited!!

And do you see these packages??? Wow… this alone just made me trust the place??

This massive volume of packaging seems to tell you, without a word, that this is a verified must-visit spot!!

What fish and platter sizes does Ttangkkeut Maeul offer?

Ttangkkeut Maeul's tanks had everything from staples like flounder and rockfish to mullet, in-season summer croaker, and autumn-season black porgy. They also had a really wide variety of seafood on hand!

Being such a popular spot, there were tons of staff working! Probably because of that, plenty of people were buying sashimi without a reservation too!

The menu ranges from Ttangkkeut Maeul's signature ttangmakase (chef's choice tasting set) to assorted sashimi and the premium platter! With this variety, you can pick whatever suits your taste!

Food tastes best when it's in season, right?? At Ttangkkeut Maeul I could enjoy an assorted set of summer-season croaker and autumn-season gizzard shad! They even sold uni, which you can only eat if it's truly fresh since otherwise it smells off!! I think this might have to become my regular spot from now on

Isn't the owner's motto really something — 'A business that skimps on ingredients will fail'??? That mindset seems to come through to customers, which is probably why so many people keep coming

Buying live shrimp next door and packing everything up

Ttangkkeut Maeul didn't sell live shrimp, but since we wanted sashimi and shrimp both, we mentioned it and the owner directed us next door, where we got fresh shrimp for even cheaper than elsewhere!! Live shrimp packed up too!

The packaging was really tidy, and there was even the owner's face printed on the bag!! I loved seeing that kind of attention to small details!

The 100,000 won medium premium platter at Hwanggeumeojang, upstairs

After picking up our sashimi, we headed up to the dipping-sauce restaurant affiliated with Ttangkkeut Maeul! We went to Hwanggeumeojang on the 2nd floor, and since it overlapped with fireworks that day, indoor seating was fully booked, so we sat outside!

We got the medium premium sashimi platter, and they even gave us an ice pack to keep the fish fresh on top, so anyone taking it home to eat should be able to enjoy fresh sashimi worry-free!

They also gave us a generous variety of condiments — vinegared gochujang, soy sauce, wasabi, ssamjang — so there was no need to buy or add anything extra separately!

Aaaah~! Amazing!!!! Can you see the visuals?!?!?! Wow, is this really the medium size?? What's going on with this portion?? The sashimi was sliced so thick that even one piece filled your mouth!

I'm not a fan of thin sashimi, but honestly, what could this place possibly be lacking??

The fish was so fresh there wasn't a hint of fishy taste, and the texture and aroma were amazing enough to make you question whether it was really live-fish sashimi!!

It wouldn't feel right to eat sashimi without pickled shallots, right?? But the amount of pickled shallots here was insane. They really don't skimp on a single ingredient

Six kinds of fish in the premium sashimi platter

Ttangkkeut Maeul's premium platter is made up of black porgy, salmon, bluefin tuna, olive flounder, red seabream, and sea bass. Usually one layer of sashimi is all you get, but can you see??? There's a whole second layer of sashimi underneath?!?

Not a single mushy or bland piece — every one was chewy, firm, and glossy. Looking at it again just makes my mouth water

Everything was delicious, but this one was my personal pick! The flesh was chewy and the skin had that great firm bite!!

And this fin section…! Honestly it's hard to pick a winner since everything was so good haha

Peeling the live shrimp by hand was harder than expected

We also prepped the live shrimp we bought ourselves — I'd watched a YouTube video and confidently thought it'd be easy, but oh, next time I'm getting it pre-prepped

Fresh live shrimp prepped by hand

The shrimp were so fresh they kept flopping around..! But the meat was so plump and big it was worth the effort!! From the sashimi to the live shrimp, we ate until we were stuffed with zero misses!

A nearly emptied premium sashimi plate alongside the live shrimp

I thought there was no way we'd finish it all, but it was so good that even while feeling ready to burst, my hand kept reaching for more. Piece by piece, we ended up finishing everything!!! lol

We even topped it off with a spicy fish stew before heading home~!! I think from now on, whenever I want sashimi, I'll be heading to Ttangkkeut Maeul in Noryangjin!! A completely satisfying meal!

The timing was great that day since there were fireworks too, so we watched them to help digest before heading home! I saw plenty of people watching the fireworks with sashimi they'd packed from the fish market, so we're planning to try that ourselves next time!
