Daejeon gopchang restaurant with chilled kimchi noodles: Uhwa Gopchang

The weather has gotten so pleasantly cool, right? It totally feels like fall lately 🍂 Weather like this is perfect for outdoor tables! That’s exactly it. I happened to be talking with my senior coworkers about having gopchang (grilled beef intestines), so we started the week with gopchang and drinks on a Monday 🍻 There’s a gopchang place near my home that I’d visited for its outdoor seating in Dunsan-dong, and since they hadn’t been, I enthusiastically recommended it and we went straight there.

I pay my own way here often too, so I recommend it if you’re visiting a gopchang place in Dunsan-dong, haha. Today I had the opportunity to visit with a discount! Even so, I’ll be writing a very honest—and delicious—review, haha.

What to check before visiting for outdoor seating

Ah, but sadly, they weren’t doing outdoor seating that day.. ㅠㅠ Such a shame.... I think it was because the day I visited was still a little warm and the weather had only just started cooling down~ I’m thinking they may open the outdoor tables from this weekend? But they might not, so I recommend contacting them before you visit.

The exterior is neat too, right? There are a lot of noisy spots in Dunsan-dong, but this alley’s outdoor-seating strip is relatively quiet, so I think it’s a nice place to enjoy outdoor tables in Dunsan-dong 💚

Complimentary sides and a look around

I arrived late.. although I was only about one or two minutes late, haha;; Everyone else had already arrived. These were the complimentary sides, and I think they served gan (liver) and cheonyeop (omasum), but none of us ate them, so we passed! For people who do eat them, they’d be perfect with drinks 🙌 The side dishes include tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and miyeokguk (seaweed soup), so if you don’t eat cheonyeop, these are perfect to snack on with a drink while you wait~

There were quite a few customers inside, so I only took photos of part of the wall! The menu is posted clearly on the wall. There are also notes about the meat and vegetables, saying they use fresh ingredients—and when you taste it, you can really tell it’s true, haha. If they’ve put that up like that, you can tell how proud the owner is of the freshness~

Assorted gopchang and staff preparation

After waiting a bit, the food came out quickly. We first ordered three servings of the assorted platter. The daechang (large intestine) was so plump.... I seriously couldn’t resist beer. With this visual ㅜ haha, we immediately ordered draft beers to enjoy with everyone 🤍 No secret that we mixed in some soju too;; Then, after you wait a little, a staff member comes over and cuts up the rest of the meat into easy-to-eat pieces!

The chadol (beef brisket) and yeomtong (beef heart) cook quickly, so they grilled them and moved them to the side, and some of the meats besides the daechang cooked first so we could eat them~ Having it cut up for us made the meal so convenient 🥺 Ah! And there’s green-onion kimchi too. They ask whether you’d like it grilled, and I strongly, strongly recommend saying yes. That’s the real kicker.... haha

Flying-fish-roe fried rice and chilled kimchi noodles

After the three-serving assorted platter, we added one serving of flying-fish-roe fried rice. Ah, looking at it again makes me want it all over... You can eat it once the egg is cooked, and there was quite a lot for one serving, so I thought we might not finish it. Because we were planning to order noodles too..

We ordered the chilled kimchi noodles too! After all the rich food and fried rice, they were absolutely perfect as a palate cleanser. We inhaled these too, haha..

And still not full, we.. ordered another fried rice and scraped the plate completely clean~ This photo shows just how delicious it was, right? Afterward, all three of us said we were stuffed to death, hahaha. We had quite a bit of soju and draft beer too, plus meat and sides until we were bursting, but the bill didn’t feel burdensome at all. I totally recommend it as a good-value gopchang restaurant! I’ll have to come back once the outdoor tables are open. A genuinely great restaurant, approved 🫶
