Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Korean restaurant with kids: cheese tteokgalbi

In short

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, set inside a remodelled old house. On a spur-of-the-moment stop on the last day of a family trip, the writer sat in a detached annex-like seat with a kid's chair and ordered Korean beef tripe hotpot, egg rice, cheese tteokgalbi for the children and Sipjangsaeng beer. Dongyang Baekban turned out to be a quiet, easy place to eat Korean food out with kids.

Feels like fall is coming but it's still hot? Still, the weather right now is just perfect ><

A while back we went to Gangwon-do for summer vacation, and on the way back we stopped by Pohang last, but it still felt like something was missing~ So we decided to check out a Hwangridan-gil restaurant in Gyeongju +_+

Where is Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch, and what are its hours?

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch (동양백반 경주황리단길 본점) is at 1056-5 Poseok-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It's open from 11 AM to 9 PM, with a break time from 3 to 5 PM.

We stopped by on a whim, no plan at all. We were eating our way through desserts and realized we'd get home too late, so we decided to have dinner too ~ We were craving rice, and while searching for a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil, this one caught our eye, so we decided on Dongyang Baekban right away!

The detached annex-style seat inside a remodelled old house

The main branch looks like it was made by renovating an old house. I love that kind of vibe haha ><. Turns out this is the original main branch, and they also have locations inside department stores! Somehow knowing it's the main branch makes it feel more like the real deal +_+

Even the bathroom had that old-school charm, which was fun.

One unique thing about this place is that the tables aren't all in one spot — some are set apart like a separate annex. That made it feel quiet, almost like a private room, which was great!

Dongyang Baekban's menu: plenty of dishes kids can eat too

The menu has main dishes plus simpler options like beef mulhoe (cold raw beef soup) or albap (roe rice bowl). There's yukjeon (pan-fried beef) and grilled mackerel, and cheese tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) too, so it's a great spot to eat out with kids. Curious about the myeongran-bap (pollock roe rice) too :) Everything looked delicious, so we agonized over the choice for a while~

They also had tips written up for eating each dish the best way, so worth checking those out.

Braised black beans and other basic side dishes

The basic side dishes came out neat and clean. Braised black beans? Haven't seen those in a while, nice to see them again ㅎ And the mixing bowl came with savory roasted seaweed flakes on top, perfect for mixing rice with later +_+ Didn't expect that, made it even better ㅎ

The egg rice my husband raved about

My husband's order — egg rice! It had that famous 'addictive egg sauce' flavor~ He kept saying it was so delicious, totally his type haha. Better reaction than when I make it myself?

If you join the review event, you can get a strawberry ice ball or a round of old-school ppopgi candy. Nice that it's not just a drink but something fun and tasty ><

Sipjangsaeng beer, the drink with the fun name

Definitely summer season, so even during a regular meal I crave beer~ Sipjangsaeng beer (십장생맥주), a name that's fun to say haha, went down really smoothly?

Cheese tteokgalbi for the kids, plus a kid's chair

We also ordered cheese tteokgalbi for the kids. Our kids don't eat much, so we tried ordering just one, and sure enough it was plenty. Not expensive either, and having a menu made for kids is such a plus ><

They also had a kid's chair ready, so if you're looking for a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju to eat out with kids, I'd really recommend the main branch of Dongyang Baekban.

Korean beef tripe hotpot: low expectations, genuinely delicious

I spent forever agonizing over what to order, but my husband didn't hesitate at all — went straight for the beef tripe hotpot ^^ Old me would've been annoyed, but I've started eating tripe little by little these days, so I coolly said ok haha.

The beef tripe hotpot was set on a burner to simmer, which kept it nice and hot. Since it comes pre-cooked once already, we could dig in quickly.

My husband said they really loaded it with beef and tripe~ He's not a fan of glass noodles, so that part was all mine haha. Anyway, he tried it first and went 'wow, so good'~ It's not usually my kind of dish so I wasn't expecting much, but wait, this is actually really good? This is definitely a solid Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil, Gyeongju.

Mixing rice and sauce into that bowl that came with the seaweed flakes earlier, and giving it a good stir — pure gold ㅎㅎ

My husband and I already talked about trying the tomato dakbokkeumtang (spicy chicken stew) next time we come~ But after eating here this time, I feel like everything on the menu would be great. Lots of variety, plus a lot of dishes that are easy for kids to eat, so I'd definitely recommend Dongyang Baekban as a Hwangridan-gil Korean restaurant for eating out with the family ♥
