Sokcho Korean BBQ with 1++ sirloin and short rib: Soyachon 338

In short

Soyachon 338 is a Korean beef butcher restaurant on Wonam Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, five minutes from the Seorak Sorano and Delpino resorts. On an early lunch visit, grade 1++ (BMS9) Korean beef sirloin and short rib came half-and-half over charcoal, finished with cold buckwheat noodle soup (mul naengmyeon). The thick-cut sirloin was tender and the short rib full of flavor, making Soyachon 338 a Sokcho Korean beef spot worth choosing over a resort breakfast.

What kind of Korean beef restaurant is Soyachon 338?

Today I'm introducing a Korean beef spot in Sokcho. Soyachon 338 sells grade 1++ BMS9 Korean beef and sits close to Hanwha Resort and Delpino Resort, making it a great location for family trips or golf trips.

Soyachon has been around in Sokcho for quite a while. According to a local friend, there used to be an old Korean beef restaurant called Soyachon near Sokcho Jungang Market, and it seems to have relocated and reopened as Soyachon 338. This is Soyachon 338, a Sokcho Korean beef restaurant with tradition, selling grade 1++ Korean beef. Sokcho tubbul (double-plus grade) Korean beef.

Since it's a butcher restaurant, you get to see and pick the Korean beef yourself, which is great.

Grade 1++ sirloin, short rib and cold noodle soup

Today's picks were Korean beef sirloin and short rib. Look at that marbling! This is BMS9 grade Korean beef. The thickness is also cut just right. Some butcher restaurants slice the meat thin to make the portion look bigger — watch out for those places.

Half sirloin, half short rib. There's charcoal under the grill plate, so you get that charcoal aroma as you cook.

Huge king oyster mushrooms and onions too — the grill plate is completely full. Looks so good.

Korean beef sirloin cut with scissors on the grill

Cutting the meat with scissors, the sirloin is incredibly tender. Whatever else you skip, you really should get 1++ for sirloin — otherwise it can get too chewy.

Juicy grilled Korean beef short rib

Juicy Korean beef short rib — best eaten while still moist off the grill. Korean beef is truly best a bit less done. The short rib has both chewiness and tenderness together. This flavorful Korean beef short rib is so good.

Grilled Korean beef eaten with pickled onion

We grilled through the rest of both halves and ate everything. The first bite always has to be just with salt — that's the golden rule. Also tried it dipped in pickled onion and wrapped in lettuce. Yep, this is 1++ (grade 9) Korean beef. Lots of marbling alone doesn't make good meat — you need to actually taste the beef's flavor. As befits a Sokcho Korean beef restaurant with tradition, the meat quality at Soyachon 338 is good.

The nicely browned king oyster mushrooms are nutty and delicious. The mushrooms were so big we had to grill them in two batches.

A bowl of cold noodle soup served for dessert

Mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) for dessert. The broth is quite clean. The lightly sweet broth is great, and the chewy noodles are exactly the texture I like.

The side dishes came out like this, and the cucumber pickles gave off a homemade feel. Since we had a baby with us, we also got a bowl of seasoned seaweed, which she ate well.

Inside Soyachon 338

Interior of Soyachon 338 with plenty of tables

The interior is quite spacious. I visited for an early lunch and ate quickly before heading out — a family eating meat first thing in the day, haha. At the next table, foreign travelers were eating bulgogi. Bulgogi really is the thing to have in Korea. For lunch, I'd also recommend simply going for the Korean beef bulgogi.

Outside Soyachon 338 and the parking lot

The first floor houses Sokcho BBQ 338, a Sokcho barbecue favorite, while the second floor building is used as Soyachon 338. The owners also run Aron Burger next door.

Verdict: is Soyachon 338 worth skipping the resort breakfast for?

Soyachon 338 is a Sokcho Korean beef restaurant with tradition that can seat groups of up to 200 people. Beyond top-grade Korean beef, there are plenty of menu items for a simple brunch too, like bulgogi, galbitang (short rib soup), and yukhoe mulhoe. If you're staying at Seorak Sorano or Delpino, I'd recommend Soyachon 338 instead of breakfast.
