I've been feeling a bit rundown lately, so I went out for beef to get some protein and recharge a little.

After some debate over where to go, I headed to Dorimgwan Hyangnam (도림관 향남본점), already famous in the Hyangnam area for its short ribs. It's actually where my boyfriend's company holds their work dinners! Every Naver review and blog post I'd seen about this Hyangnam beef spot was glowing, so I was curious — and after going myself, I totally get why everyone recommends it. Let me break it down!
1. A spacious parking lot that makes arriving painless
You know how a cramped parking lot can drain your energy before you even sit down to eat? Here, there's a generously sized dedicated lot right in front, so even nervous drivers like me can park without any stress. Even during evening rush hour or weekend peak times, parking looked like a total non-issue. There's also separate parking space around the back! The exterior alone gives off serious "good restaurant" vibes — I was already excited.

2. Is this really a BBQ place? Roomy and private inside
What I liked most walking in was the seating layout!!! At a typical Korean BBQ restaurant, tables are usually crammed together, everything's loud and chaotic, and it's hard to even hold a conversation. Noisy places drain me, haha.

But at Dorimgwan, partitions divide the tables nicely, so it feels really cozy. It's not a fully enclosed private room, but it blocks off most of the surrounding sightlines, which made it perfect for chatting just between us over the meal. Of course, there's also open seating for anyone who prefers the classic BBQ restaurant vibe. During our visit, the table next to us was having a very heated debate about Iron Man versus Spider-Man, so some of that noise did carry over, haha.
I'd really recommend this place for a family meal out, a date, or when you're looking for a quiet, small work dinner spot. Now I get why my boyfriend's company keeps coming back here for dinners.
Since we'd made a reservation, they had the table set up in advance for us, and I walked in with a total wide-eyed reaction.

Jeolla-do food needs no introduction, but this really felt like being on a trip to Jeolla-do — clean, well put-together, delicious dishes everywhere. Time to properly stock up on nutrients, haha.

Oh, and Dorimgwan Hyangnam also serves crab stew for free!! It has a whole crab inside, plus assorted vegetables and shrimp. Couldn't get a photo, but there's also a neatly organized self-serve bar on the side, so if you run low on basic side dishes or sauces, you can just help yourself without feeling awkward about it, haha.
3. Short ribs full of charcoal aroma (plain vs. marinated)

We ordered the signature menu item — short ribs. They're sold by the half-portion (500g), which makes it easy to order based on group size. Our order, the Muan red-clay garlic ribs half-portion, came to about ₩49,000, so the price felt reasonable too! I debated between plain and marinated, but since I like sweet flavors, I went with marinated!
The moment the meat hit the roaring charcoal, that smoky aroma soaked right in — genuinely mouthwatering. Grilled golden on the outside while still juicy inside, it had zero gamey smell and was incredibly savory.

That foil packet in the middle is actually shiitake mushroom caps!! Neither of us can eat mushrooms (allergy), so we had to leave them, unfortunately. There's a sand timer, though — once you flip it and it runs out, the mushrooms are fully cooked and ready to eat!

Dipping the meat in the spicy crab sauce that comes alongside, then into the other red sauce, was my favorite combo. Turns out that red sauce is fermented hairtail innards sauce!
"Good at grilling" seat, "in charge of utensils" seat?
Here's a fun detail about Dorimgwan: there's a "good at grilling" seat and a "utensils duty" seat, haha, such a clever and playful touch. Though whoever's on utensil duty has to lean their chair back every time to grab a spoon, haha.

It's delicious eaten simply with the onion relish, and just as good dipped in the salt-sesame oil-wasabi combo.

Marinated beef is usually so sweet or heavily seasoned that a few bites in, you're already tired of it. But here, the marinade is subtle enough that it doesn't mask the meat's natural flavor, so it doesn't get old even by the end. If you're not a fan of strong seasoning, you'll still enjoy this a lot!!

My boyfriend peeled the shrimp for me — there were two hefty shrimp in the crab stew. And once we were near the end of the meat, grilling sweet potato on the grill made for a nice sweet finish, haha.
4. Sides you can't skip after all that meat
It would've felt incomplete to leave after just meat, so we made sure to fill up on sides too. We debated between cold noodles or rice, but since we're both crab-sauce fanatics, we immediately went with the spicy crab bibimbap!!

Spicy crab bibimbap (₩8,000) — everyone, please try this one. Even with my crab allergy, I barely reacted, which tells me the crab was washed well, and the taste was genuinely crazy... honestly, if I had this at home I'd eat nothing else. The portion was generous enough that I could see coming just for this alone at lunch, and the sauce combination was excellent. I demolished it in no time. I've heard the raw beef tartare here is great too, so I'll have to try that next time, haha. Apparently there's also a lunch special worth checking out.

When you're done and heading out, there are free drinks and coffee ready at the counter, and the owner thoughtfully sets out candy and caramels too.
