Shabu-shabu is easily in my top 3 favorite foods! And among shabu places, I really love Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu. With evenings getting a little cooler lately, I stopped by Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch, a well-known spot near Dongtan Lake Park :)

Where Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch is, and what the room feels like
Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch is on the 2nd floor of Gran Passage, really close to Dongtan Lake Park, so it's a great stop before or after a walk. When we arrived the place was packed with customers~~ We had a short wait, but there were chairs set up outside so we could sit comfortably while waiting.

Whoa, they even have spicy freshwater shrimp soup — how interesting haha! Sounds refreshing and delicious!

Our turn came up quickly! On one side of the restaurant I spotted a visit autograph from Ji Suk-jin. I saw his signature at another restaurant in Dongtan before too — seems like he comes to Dongtan a lot, what's going on there haha

There's a takeout event where you can buy shabu beef for ₩7,000, so it seems like a good option to take home when you feel like making shabu-shabu yourself. On days when you just want a simple shabu-shabu at home, this could be handy :)

Menu and broth options: spicy, perilla seed or clear
Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu's base menu is mushroom kalguksu, and you can choose from three broths: spicy, perilla, or clear. At the Gran Passage branch there are also special menus like spicy freshwater shrimp soup and spicy kalguksu with fish roe, worth trying haha!

What we ordered: spicy shabu kalguksu set for two, ₩30,000 (shabu hot pot + shabu beef + kalguksu & dumplings + fried rice).
On the table were soy sauce and wasabi sauce for dipping the shabu-shabu, plus kimchi, which is a must alongside kalguksu. The kimchi was nice and crunchy too, and it went perfectly with everything haha

The 30,000 won set for two with minari and mung bean sprouts
Here comes our order! For vegetables you could choose minari only, mung bean sprouts only, or minari + mung bean sprouts — we went with minari + mung bean sprouts! The shabu beef came out generously, no skimping haha. Plus kalguksu noodles and 2 dumplings.

Personally I think the fried rice is Deungchon's hidden main dish, and even the ingredients for it came out generously as part of the spread. With prices these days, ₩30,000 for two people with all this is honestly great value haha

How to eat the shabu-shabu in order, and how the spicy broth tastes
Once the broth starts boiling, first fully cook the minari, mung bean sprouts, and mushrooms, then add the shabu meat piece by piece and eat it up properly :)

Shabu-shabu really does taste best when you eat the vegetables and meat together haha. Personally I think Deungchon's kalguksu needs plenty of minari to be at its best, so next time I'll go with minari only, ha_ha

The shabu beef looked fresh, and cooked briefly in the hot broth it was soft and moist. Eating it together with the minari and mung bean sprouts added a crunchy texture too — so good!! Currently eating the fluffy cooked potatoes and vegetables like there's no tomorrow haha

Maybe because of the minari and mung bean sprouts in the spicy broth, it had a spicy-tangy yet refreshing taste. Not just spicy for the sake of it — a clean flavor coming from the vegetables! Deungchon Kalguksu is delicious every single time.

Kalguksu and dumplings, then fried rice to finish
Once you've had your fill of shabu-shabu, it's time for the next course! The kalguksu noodles!

Once the kalguksu noodles are added and simmered, the spicy broth soaks right into the noodles, feeling like a whole different dish! Eating the dumplings alongside, we were starting to get full haha
But there's a final, unmissable menu item at Deungchon Kalguksu, no matter how full you are. It's the fried rice! Staff bring it over and stir-fry it for you right there.

Nutty and savory, with egg mixed in for extra softness — even after eating so much already, my hand kept reaching for more!

In the end my husband, saying he was full, was still scraping the pot clean haha
Is Deungchon worth a return trip for shabu-shabu in Dongtan?
From the spicy broth to the shabu meat, kalguksu, dumplings, and fried rice — one meal here really fills you up. The restaurant was clean overall and the ingredients felt fresh, making Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch a satisfying find for shabu-shabu in Dongtan!
If you're looking for a place to eat at Gran Passage in Dongtan, or craving something hot and spicy, it's worth a visit. Next time I want to try the spicy freshwater shrimp soup or the spicy mushroom kalguksu with fish roe too haha. I'll definitely be back whenever I'm craving shabu-shabu in Dongtan :)
