Seokchon Station Korean BBQ with wholegrain mustard: Sutbul Seonghwa
In short
Sutbul Seonghwa is a charcoal-grilled beef restaurant near exit 1 of Seokchon Station in Songpa, Seoul. Arriving right at weekend opening time, the writer ordered the Seonghwa mixed platter — 240g of Seonghwa sirloin and 160g of wine-marinated short rib — and let the staff grill it, tasting each piece with Maldon salt, house salt, wasabi, wholegrain mustard and shiitake wasabi in turn. Sirloin topped with wholegrain mustard was the best combination, and the wide spacing between tables made Sutbul Seonghwa a good choice for a quiet gathering.

These days when I go out for meat, I'm not just looking for good meat — I want a place with decent atmosphere where I can actually talk while eating. This time I went to Sutbul Seonghwa, a Korean BBQ spot near Seokchon Station.

I'd heard they use top-grade beef short rib cuts and good charcoal here, so I was curious — and after trying it myself, the meat quality was pretty impressive haha.
What Sutbul Seonghwa looks like inside: atmosphere and seating
Sutbul Seonghwa was much bigger than I expected! The tables were spaced far apart, so I didn't have to worry about the next table over, and overall it had a calm vibe rather than the usual noisy BBQ joint feel.

It looked like there were separate private rooms too, so this place would work well for family gatherings, company dinners, or even a wedding-invitation meetup.

What comes with the Seonghwa mixed platter, and who grills it
Here's the Sutbul Seonghwa menu board — actual ordering is done through the tablet haha. What we ordered was the Seonghwa mixed platter.

It's made up of 240g of Seonghwa sirloin plus 160g of wine-marinated short rib! They started by grilling the sirloin first, and since staff grilled it for us directly, it was really easy to just sit back and eat.
With beef, the quality of the meat matters, but honestly so does how it's grilled haha. Overcook it and it's a letdown, but grilling it yourself means constantly watching the meat — so having staff grill it to just the right doneness was great.

How does the Seonghwa sirloin taste?
What I enjoyed most that day was definitely the sirloin! From the moment I saw it, the marbling looked really nice, and once grilled it had a glossy sheen.

I tried a bite and the meat wasn't tough at all — it was on the tender side, and the more I chewed, the more that distinct savory beef flavor came through.
I especially liked the subtle smoky charcoal aroma that came with it. Personally I prefer meat where the flavor of the meat itself comes through rather than being masked by heavy seasoning, and the sirloin was exactly that.
At first I ate it plain without dipping it in anything, and the meat itself was so savory it was delicious on its own; dipping it lightly in salt made it taste clean too.

Best pairings: wholegrain mustard and shiitake wasabi
I also liked that there were several side condiments to eat with the meat.

Fresh vegetables, water dropwort, celery, and mushroom wasabi came out, along with Maldon salt, house salt, wasabi, and wholegrain mustard. So instead of eating it just one way, I got to try mixing and matching different combinations haha.

For me, sirloin topped with wholegrain mustard was the tastiest. The savory flavor of the meat paired really well with the little pops of the mustard seeds.

The mushroom wasabi was better than expected too. It worked best with just a small amount rather than piling it on — the sharp kick of the wasabi cut through the richness of the meat and kept things clean. I went back and forth between salt, wholegrain mustard, and mushroom wasabi haha.
Eating it a little differently each time made the same meat feel new every bite.

What struck me most that day, above all, was just how good the quality of the meat itself was! ♥️♥️ The charcoal aroma and beef flavor came together so well that anyone who loves meat would be satisfied.

Wine-marinated short rib vs. sirloin: what's the difference?
After the sirloin, we moved on to the wine-marinated short rib. Where the sirloin was a clean, straightforward showcase of the meat's own flavor, the wine-marinated short rib had seasoning in it, giving it a richer, more full-bodied taste. The two had such different characters that I was glad we'd ordered the mixed platter.
Eating just one type of meat the whole time can get a bit repetitive, but going from sirloin to seasoned short rib really changed up the mood haha.

Free ice cream dessert and the verdict on Sutbul Seonghwa
After finishing the meal, they gave us free Excellent ice cream. Ordering through the tablet and having it brought to us was convenient, and finishing off a meat meal with ice cream felt surprisingly nice haha.
Overall, the meat quality was good, and the spacious dining room made for a comfortable meal.

In particular, my favorite combination was sirloin with wholegrain mustard, and I liked being able to add a little mushroom wasabi or various salts to suit my taste. If you're looking for a decent-atmosphere BBQ spot near Seokchon Station, or a not-too-noisy place for a gathering, give Sutbul Seonghwa a try :)
