Why I went snack shopping at Jeju Dongmun Market

A blog neighbor of mine recently had some delicious snacks at Dongmun Market!! 👀 I saw the photos and suddenly wanted them too, haha. So since I was already in Jeju, I stopped by Dongmun Market to pick up some tasty snacks for myself and also to prep some for my wedding photoshoot 😎 I think I got excited about the eating part before the shoot even started, haha. Since a full day of wedding photos can leave you starving between shots, I decided to grab some easy snacks in advance!

Where to park at Dongmun Market

You can park at the public parking lot. During busy hours even getting into the lot can be slow, but there's really nothing more convenient than parking right next to the market! We went in through the entrance near Abebe Bakery, and once you're parked it connects straight to the market, so no long walk with your bags — great for browsing too. It's a paid public lot, but the rates are fairly reasonable, so it doesn't feel like much of a burden.

First snack stop: Cheongchuni Oranda

First up, Cheongchuni Oranda!! I actually bought oranda here once before with a friend on a previous Jeju trip, so seeing it again felt weirdly nostalgic, haha.

Individual wrapping vs. box packs

There were individually wrapped pieces as well as boxes with multiple pieces, so it was easy to pick separately for snacking and for gifting. The individual wrapping in particular was great for grabbing one piece at a time! Wedding photoshoots involve constant outfit changes, moving around, and shooting, so eating a lot feels like too much — but having snacks wrapped one by one was perfect for a quick bite whenever my energy dipped, haha.

You can taste before you choose

Another great thing was being able to taste-test on the spot! There were more oranda flavors than I expected, so I was torn on what to pick — but tasting before buying meant no risk of picking wrong. I tried a bit of each, and they were way better than expected, so I kept reaching for more, haha.

What's the texture of oranda like?

When you hear "oranda," you might expect it to be super hard or overly sweet, but the ones I tried were crisp without being too hard, and nutty and sweet the more you chewed — I thought they'd pair really well with coffee or tea, haha.

Each flavor had such a distinct personality that finishing one made me curious about the next 😆 They also had gwajul (Korean fried honey cookie) made fresh on-site! Watching them being made right there added to the fun of browsing.

The flavors I picked across two gift sets

After going back and forth, we picked two Cheongchuni Oranda gift sets that let us sample a variety of flavors evenly. The garlic oranda had a nutty base with a subtle garlic note that made it unusual and delicious, while the yuzu oranda had that signature bright citrus aroma layered in — sweet with a clean finish!

The surprise favorite: gamtae oranda

And the one I ended up liking more than expected was the gamtae (seaweed) oranda, haha!! I like the texture and nutty flavor of gamtae, and it felt totally different from the other oranda flavors. Garlic was nutty, yuzu was bright, and gamtae stood out for its texture alone — each had its own charm. So I was glad I went with the gift sets that had a mix of flavors, haha. There's something fun about picking whatever flavor you're in the mood for on a given day rather than sticking to one, and it's also great for sharing among a group.

Wedding shoot snack and a gift for the photographer

This time I especially needed snacks to eat between shots during the Jeju wedding photoshoot, and I also wanted to pass along a small, not-too-heavy gift to the photographer — this fit perfectly 🫶 Since it comes as a nicely packaged gift set, it works better for handing to the photographer than just eating it as a snack myself!
