Suwon café with quiet back seats and 2,000-won cookies: Jo Hui-tak

Today I want to introduce a café near Ajou University that I found while looking for a quiet place to sit down with a coffee after a meal — Jo Hui-tak Coffee (조희탁커피). The address is 12 Ajuro 47beon-gil, 1st floor, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, and it's open from 11:00 to 22:00.

I wanted somewhere I could sip coffee slowly and chat, or just rest for a bit, rather than a crowded, chaotic café. That's how I ended up at Jo Hui-tak Coffee. It's near Ajou University so it was fairly easy to get to, and if you're driving, there's a paid public parking lot in Uman 2-dong nearby. The first hour is free, so even a short café stop felt low-pressure.

When I first saw the outside of Jo Hui-tak Coffee, it felt like a small, neat neighborhood café. Instead of a flashy exterior that grabs your attention, it had the kind of vibe that makes you want to wander in naturally while walking through the neighborhood. But once I actually opened the door and stepped inside, I was a little surprised at how much more spacious it was than I'd expected.

From the outside it looked like a small café, but the deeper in you went, the more seating there was, so I could sit down more comfortably than I'd expected. It felt less like a takeout-only coffee spot and more like a proper café near Ajou University where you could settle in and take your time.

The overall interior mood was warm yet sophisticated. Moody lighting gave the space a soft glow — not too dark or stuffy, but rather calm and easy to linger in. Some customers were chatting quietly, and it seemed like a comfortable place to sit alone too. Personally, these days I prefer cafés that are comfortable to sit in for a long time over ones that just focus on pretty interiors.

What we ordered at Jo Hui-tak Coffee and what it cost

On this visit I ordered two Americanos at ₩5,500 each, a yellow cheese cookie at ₩2,000, and a chocolate chip cookie at ₩2,000.

Americano, 5,500 won

First up was the Americano. The first sip was clean yet nutty. It wasn't too heavy or intense, but it also didn't feel thin — there was a nice, appropriate body to it. Even people who don't love coffee with strong acidity could probably drink this comfortably. Rather than leaving a lingering heaviness in the mouth, it finished cleanly, which made it pair even better with the desserts.

Chocolate chip cookie, 2,000 won

With the chocolate chip cookie, the first bite had a slightly crisp exterior while the inside stayed chewy. Rather than being purely crunchy, it had a fun chewiness that made it good to eat alongside the coffee.

Yellow cheese cookie, 2,000 won

Next I tried the yellow cheese cookie. The distinctive nutty, rich flavor of yellow cheese went really well with the coffee. Rather than being simply sweet, the cookie had that characteristic cheesy nuttiness, which made it taste even better with the Americano. Ordering both cookies together turned out to be a good call.

Overall, this café near Ajou University had roomy inner seating that belied its modest exterior, and the moody lighting made for a comfortable, calm atmosphere to spend time in. The coffee was nutty with a nice body and a clean finish, and both the chocolate chip cookie and yellow cheese cookie, at ₩2,000 each, were satisfying, easy add-ons.
