Hapjeong café for rigatoni ragù and coffee blends: Seowon Angil

In short

Seowon Angil Hapjeong is a spacious brunch café in Hapjeong, Mapo, Seoul. I tried its rigatoni ragù pasta and compared the Angil and Seowon blend Americanos while looking around its plant-filled first and second floors. The chewy pasta and easy-to-drink coffee were especially delicious.

Seowon Angil Hapjeong is a huge Hapjeong café with tons of seating and a seriously spacious interior, serving a wide range of brunch dishes—delicious Western food, pasta, plates, salads, and even kimchi fried rice and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes)—along with coffee, beer, and wine.

A brunch café on the way from Hapjeong to Hongdae

Introduction to Seowon Angil Hapjeong

I pass along the road from Hapjeong to Hongdae often, and there is a place that suddenly catches my eye: “Oh, what is this place?” It is Seowon Angil Hapjeong, a large café known for Western-style food where you can enjoy coffee and brunch with your pet.

A menu with everything from pasta to tteokbokki

There are all kinds of pasta, cakes, and plates, plus tasty Korean tteokbokki and kimchi fried rice, so if you want brunch but feel like Korean food, this seems like a great place to come. There is plenty of coffee, too, as well as ades, bottled beer, and wine by the glass, so I think anyone looking for a big café near Hongdae or Hapjeong would enjoy it.

You could choose your coffee beans, too. The photo on the right is Seowon Angil Hapjeong’s new chicken breast steak, haha. You can also buy coffee beans and other products.

The first floor, with picture windows and plants

It is such a large place that there are seats everywhere, with all kinds of chairs and tables, and it is incredibly roomy. I could not photograph every single bit, but I will show you as much as I can!

The interior is decorated with plants here and there, and the colorful palette is so pretty, right? The first-floor window seats have wide-open, floor-to-ceiling window views that feel wonderfully refreshing and atmospheric. It is not quite as hot now and not cold yet, so it is the perfect weather to go out with friends, a partner, or a group. Having brunch or a light drink here in the gentle breeze feels really lovely.

Pet policy information at Seowon Angil

Just so you know, pets are allowed here, so anyone uncomfortable with that should keep it in mind when visiting.

More spacious seating and Wi-Fi upstairs

The café has two floors. The first floor alone is really big and has so many seats, but the second floor is the same size, so it feels like you would surely find a seat even during busy weekend times?! Please check the photo, though, because there is a time limit for using the second floor! It is just as open, fresh, and pleasant upstairs, with lots of plants for that plant-interior feel~~~ The first floor is more uniquely colorful, while the second has even more plants and these fun mother-of-pearl(?) chairs! There is Wi-Fi on the second floor, too.

Seowon Angil ragù pasta and Americanos

Seowon Angil ragù pasta order

I ordered Seowon Angil Hapjeong’s popular Seowon Angil Ragù Pasta and two Americanos.

Ragù pasta made with rigatoni

Beef ragù sauce rigatoni pasta

It is rigatoni pasta with a deeply flavored ragù sauce made by simmering beef and vegetables for a long time.

Rigatoni is a small tube-shaped Italian pasta that is larger than penne or ziti and can sometimes be curved.

Rigatoni with ragù sauce

Put simply, it is pasta with ragù sauce using rigatoni, that tube-shaped kind of pasta. It was my first time trying it, and it was really delicious.

Chewy rigatoni and beef ragù

The rigatoni was chewy and springy, with tender beef that had been finely ground and simmered for a long time!! I cannot eat much when something is very salty or sweet, but this pasta was seasoned just right, and the sauce was not overwhelming at all. Ragù sauce is so tasty!!

Comparing the Angil and Seowon blends

Two iced Americanos! The one on the left was the Angil blend, with low acidity and a stronger nutty flavor; the one on the right was the more acidic Seowon blend. They looked distinctly different even to the eye, so I ordered both on purpose to compare them! I am not really someone who enjoys Americanos all that much. Some places make them intensely bitter, so I tend not to try them, but Seowon Angil’s coffee was not overly bitter or unpleasant, and even my kid-like palate found it so delicious.

If you pile plenty of pasta and beef onto the baguette that comes with the Seowon Angil Ragù Pasta and take one big bite, the combination of crisp bread, chewy springy pasta, and tender, juicy meat is truly delicious!

Baguette paired with ragù pasta

I took one more cup to go on the way out! Haha. By the way, takeaway orders and orders in a personal tumbler are discounted from the menu price, so it is good value, too?! I recommend Seowon Angil as a Hapjeong brunch café with great pasta and Western-style dishes, and as a big café in Hapjeong~
