Sokcho market food stall for shell-on shrimp tempura: Hwangbuja Twigim

In short

Hwangbuja Twigim is a tempura and squid sundae (stuffed squid sausage) stall inside Sokcho Tourist and Fisheries Market, also known as Jungang Market. A single bite of the nurungji (scorched rice) squid sundae, 15,000 won, changed the order, and the shrimp tempura came down to peeled nude shrimp or shell-on shrimp at 10,000 won each — shell-on won and filled a yellow bag. Unpacked at the accommodation and reheated in an air fryer at home, the fried seafood from Hwangbuja Twigim held up both times.

Where is Hwangbuja Twigim in Sokcho Jungang Market?

Hwangbuja Twigim is a tempura and squid sundae (stuffed squid sausage) stall inside Sokcho Tourist and Fisheries Market (Sokcho Jungang Market). Walking through the market, you can see the tempura literally piled up like a mountain in front of the stall.

From shrimp and squid tempura to several kinds of sundae and savory pancakes, the variety is wide enough that I naturally stopped in my tracks just looking around.

Tempura and sundae piled on display

Hwangbuja Twigim says it always uses clean oil and carefully selected ingredients, even if it means selling a little less, because they want to serve clean, delicious food consistently. Honestly, oil quality is always a bit of a concern when buying tempura at a market, so I appreciated that they take this seriously.

What is nurungji squid sundae, and why order it?

You can't talk about Sokcho Jungang Market without mentioning squid sundae (stuffed squid sausage). While I was looking around, they offered me a taste of the nurungji (scorched rice) squid sundae. I hadn't actually planned to get that one, but one bite completely changed my mind haha — it was genuinely delicious!

The squid sundae was packed full and grilled to a nice golden color — too good to pass up. If you're looking for squid sundae at a Sokcho Jungang Market restaurant, I'd say try the nurungji version alongside the regular one.

Shell-on shrimp or nude shrimp tempura: which to choose

Hwangbuja Twigim's shrimp tempura comes in two options — peeled nude shrimp tempura and shell-on shrimp tempura — so you can pick whichever suits your taste. And the range of tempura here is genuinely wide. Even in photos you can see the shrimp tempura piled high haha. When freshly fried tempura is stacked up like that at a market, walking past it is basically the hardest thing to do.

Peeled and shell-on shrimp tempura side by side

Wait, you can choose between two kinds of shrimp?! Peeled or shell-on! Personally I feel like steamed shrimp beats cocktail shrimp when it comes to real shrimp tempura, so I went with the one on the right!!

Chunky squid tempura

The squid tempura pieces were pretty big too. I always feel a little disappointed when squid tempura is small, but here they were noticeably chunky, which I loved. If you like shrimp, go for the shrimp tempura; if you like squid, go for the squid tempura — packing a mix of both together seems like the perfect move.

In the end, we filled up a whole yellow Hwangbuja Twigim bag!

Eating the takeout at the accommodation and reheating it in an air fryer

Market food spread out at the accommodation

Back at the accommodation, laying everything out one by one finally made it feel like a real Sokcho trip haha. Part of the fun of Sokcho Jungang Market food is packing a bunch of things and spreading them out for a feast back at your room.

A full tempura feast set up at the accommodation

The market has plenty more than tempura to pack alongside it too — raw fish, dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken in sweet-spicy sauce), and more — so it's a great stop for dinner or a late-night snack run. If you're planning to pack market food for a feast at your Sokcho accommodation, check out Hwangbuja Twigim :)

Plate of tempura and squid sundae

Personally, the biggest surprise at Hwangbuja Twigim was definitely the nurungji squid sundae! Sometimes the dish you stumble on by accident sticks with you more than the one you planned for, and this was exactly that case haha.

Tempura reheated in the air fryer

The leftovers went into the air fryer once we got home, too! If you're looking for a good Sokcho Jungang Market restaurant, don't just stick to the familiar dakgangjeong — check out the squid sundae and tempura too. Hwangbuja Twigim has enough variety, from the nurungji squid sundae to two kinds of shrimp tempura and chunky squid tempura, that it's a solid spot for a group to visit and pack up whatever suits everyone's taste.
