Gwangmyeong pork belly restaurant with folding-door patio: Sammokjip

Met up with a friend in her neighborhood after a while and we were trying to figure out what to eat — turned out there was a famous pork belly place nearby, so we went straight there haha 😆

A 5-minute walk from Exit 5, with folding doors opened wide

After about a 5-minute walk from Exit 5 of Gwangmyeong Sageori Station, you'll see the storefront of <Sammokjip Gwangmyeong Branch>!

The side of the restaurant has a huge folding door that opens right up, giving it a really open feel! It's the perfect setup for grilling meat with an outdoor-tent vibe on a nice day.

Here's the neatly arranged self-serve bar! Everything from lettuce wraps to kimchi, shredded green onion, garlic, and various sauces is generously stocked.

A neatly set basic table spread! The side dishes that go perfectly with meat were all set up.

The anchovy sauce (myeolchi-jeot) especially stood out — different from the usual store-bought kind! It seems to be made in-house, because there was zero fishy taste, just deep, rich umami left behind.

Staff grill the pork from start to finish

The biggest perk of Sammokjip! The staff carefully grill the meat all the way through from start to finish. No need to juggle grilling and conversation — you just get to sit back and wait until it's perfectly cooked. So nice 😊

Look at that gorgeous meat on the grill! Whole scallion skirt meat, thick pork belly, mushrooms, shishito peppers, even a bowl of kimchi grilled alongside — such a nice touch 💛

What the whole-scallion pork skirt meat tastes like

I was most curious about the whole scallion skirt meat, so I tried that first 😋 As the scallion grills, its sweetness comes right up to the surface for a subtle sweetness, and the skirt meat itself is lightly seasoned sweet-and-savory — the flavor combo is incredible 💚

Thick Sammok pork belly, best eaten in a lettuce wrap

While eating the skirt meat, the pork belly had gotten perfectly cooked in the meantime 🥩

The well-cooked pork belly...

...is best enjoyed wrapped in lettuce, of course! I piled thick pork belly on fresh lettuce, added shishito pepper, garlic, and ssamjang (dipping sauce), and took a big bite 🥰 A familiar taste that's scarily hard to stop eating 🧡

Finishing with brisket doenjang stew and griddle kimchi fried rice

You can't skip doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) when eating meat! With beef brisket in it, the broth was really rich and savory, plus a bit spicy, which cut right through the greasiness of the meat.

We finished with the K-dessert: fried rice ❗ The fried rice here doesn't need to be cooked separately on the grill — it comes already fully cooked from the kitchen. Pop the egg yolk and mix it in with the seaweed flakes for the perfect combo 🧡

Sammokjip was a place where I could enjoy the whole meal comfortably without having to grill anything myself, since the staff did it all! From the signature whole scallion skirt meat to the pork belly, brisket doenjang stew, and kimchi fried rice, nothing was missing and I was fully satisfied haha ㅎㅎ
