Hanji-wrapped fruit mochi for a couple's trip in Gyeongju: Tareudang
In short
Tareudang is a giant fruit mochi specialty shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. Visiting with her boyfriend during a Gyeongju trip, the writer took mango yogurt, gold kiwi, and pineapple mochi to go and ate them back at the guesthouse, finding whole fruit inside each one and a thin, chewy rice cake skin. The hanji (traditional Korean paper) wrapping made the package feel gift-worthy, and gold kiwi came out on top of the three.

Today, since we were already in Gyeongju with my boyfriend, I looked up dessert spots on Hwangnidang-gil and ended up at Tareudang! Tareudang specializes in giant fruit mochi, and they were seriously huge and seriously delicious 👍 Let me introduce them right now~!

Tareudang's exterior on Hwangnidang-gil and the wait

Here's the exterior of Tareudang, a dessert spot on Hwangnidang-gil. It was right on the main street! There were quite a few customers ahead of us, but the wait wasn't too long, which was nice. There's no seating area — it's takeout only.

The mochi are displayed so you can see them from outside. They kind of look like the currently trendy hanjeongseon (Korean-style fruit sando), I think 🫶

Tareudang's menu — what kinds of mochi are there
Here's Tareudang's menu board. The mochi lineup seems to change depending on the day. When we visited, it was mango yogurt, peach yogurt, fig yogurt, plain chocolate, gold kiwi, and pineapple mochi. Besides mochi, they also sell egg tarts, Yangtze ganlu, and various other desserts! I heard their tarts are famous too — next time I'll definitely try one of each 🥹🩷

We packed up mango yogurt, gold kiwi, and pineapple mochi! Ah, I'm so excited,,
Opening the package at the guesthouse

Brought these guys back to the guesthouse! They were packed carefully so they arrived safely~ Which one should we eat first~?🤭

The packaging is really pretty too. It's wrapped in hanji, which makes it feel almost luxurious. Would make a great gift 👍

Gold kiwi mochi — today's number one
Let's start with the gold kiwi~! I've been really into kiwi lately. The ultimate sweet-and-tangy fruit~

I ate it right away and the gold kiwi seemed to be almost whole inside! The feeling of it filling my mouth,, and the juice was amazing ㅠㅠ It was so sweet too — the sugar content was insane 🫶 The kiwi just melts away, honestly,, The red bean paste and the rice cake skin were also chewy~ and the castella crumb coating outside blended in perfectly. We both agreed gold kiwi was today's number one mochi 🩷

Low-sugar mango yogurt mochi
Next up, the low-sugar mango yogurt~ Being low-sugar meant I could enjoy it with an even easier conscience!

The mango was whole inside too, and it was really sweet and delicious! It went so well with the yogurt cream, super soft 🩷 The mango flavor really came through, which I loved~ Maybe mango really is the king of fruit mochi..!

Pineapple mochi and the rice cake skin's texture
Lastly, we had the pineapple. One bite in and it was pure sweet-and-tangy,, with real chunks of fruit inside again, which made me so happy. Why is all their fruit this fresh?! The sweetness was great too ✨️
And now for the most important part — the rice cake skin! It was chewy, thin, and soft, which I loved. I feel like the skin alone would be delicious ㅋㅋㅋ The combo of fresh fruit, cream, and red bean paste was excellent too 👍
Would I go back?
If I visit Hwangnidang-gil again, I'd definitely come back here! Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good dessert spot on Hwangnidang-gil~
