Gyeongju café low-sugar red bean walnut pastries: Buja Hodu

I want to introduce the walnut pastries I tried on a recent trip to Gyeongju because they were so delicious. Buja Hodu is a must-stop when you visit Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju. Made with 100% Korean rice dough, these are special walnut pastries with a crisp exterior and a moist, generously filled center.

Atmospheric Exterior and Outdoor Terrace

While walking through the side streets and looking around Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, I spotted Buja Hodu, welcoming me with its warm, atmospheric lighting!

Outside, there are neat outdoor tables and seats under parasols. It was an appealing outdoor space where you could try freshly made, warm walnut pastries right away or enjoy them as a snack while exploring Hwangridan-gil.

A 15-Piece Mix Packed Near Closing

I arrived late, around closing time, and the matcha flavor was already sold out. Low-sugar red bean paste and pea cream cheese were also running low, so I sadly took home a 15-piece mix set. It really showed how popular this Hwangridan-gil dessert spot is!

The standard 15-piece mix is [5 low-sugar red bean + 5 pea cream cheese + 5 matcha]... But the owner thoughtfully filled the box with extra low-sugar red bean and pea cream cheese pastries, so I accepted it very gratefully. 😋

I also ordered an iced Americano. The cool iced Americano went wonderfully with the sweet, nutty walnut pastries! 😋

Generously Filled Walnut Pastries at Home

After bringing it home, I opened my Buja Hodu box.

Each pastry was individually and neatly wrapped, which felt hygienic and made them easy to take out one at a time.

When I cut one open, I couldn't help but marvel at how completely packed with filling it was!

Low-Sugar Red Bean Paste

The chewy 100% Korean rice dough, mild and nutty red bean paste, and the texture of big whole walnuts were absolutely excellent.

Pea Cream Cheese

The sweet, soft pea paste paired beautifully with the rich cream cheese. It felt like eating an upscale fusion dessert.
