Charcoal eel grill in Gusan-dong, Gimhae: Ildeung Chamsutt Jangeo

In short

Ildeung Chamsutt Jangeo is a charcoal-grilled freshwater eel restaurant in Gusan-dong, Gimhae, Gyeongnam, serving 100% domestic eel. Arriving early in the evening with my parents, I ordered 1kg of freshwater eel, which came out as about two whole eels, and the staff grilled every piece at the table so no one had to watch the coals. With fried eel bones and nurungjitang (scorched-rice water) rounding out the meal, Ildeung Chamsutt Jangeo is an easy choice for a restorative dinner with parents.

Even though it was still early evening, I suddenly got hungry and started craving smoky grilled eel. Gimhae is famous for its freshwater eel spots, so it's a place my family often goes for a meal out. I happened to be in the mood for eel, so I headed to Ildeung Chamsutt Jangeo in Gusan-dong, Gimhae. This time I went with my parents and we ordered 1kg of eel to grill over charcoal.

Inside the restaurant and the kids' playroom

Inside, there's a separate self-service corner, and overall the restaurant is quite spacious, giving families plenty of room to enjoy a meal comfortably.

Quiet dining hall during early evening

We came in during the early evening and the place was quite roomy — it looks like it'd work well for both group dinners and family gatherings.

What really caught my eye was the kids' playroom. When eating out with kids, sometimes looking after them is harder than the meal itself, so having a playroom means families with young children can eat a little more comfortably.

How much eel do you get with a 1kg order?

We ordered the 1kg charcoal-grilled freshwater eel. I wondered how much that actually was, but seeing it in person, about two whole eels came out, which felt like a pretty generous amount.

Side dishes and how the charcoal-grilled eel tasted

What we ordered that day was the 1kg freshwater eel. Here's the basic table setting.

Basic table setting for the grilled eel
Eel bone chips and nurungjitang scorched-rice water

Crispy eel bone chips and warm, refreshing nurungjitang (scorched-rice water) arrived, settling and warming the stomach. For a high-protein nourishing meal like this, a warm stomach seems to help digestion too — a good combination. As the eel sizzled golden on the charcoal, the savory smell rising up only made my hungry stomach more eager. The staff grilled the eel to just the right point, so we could eat comfortably without worrying about the grilling ourselves.

The well-grilled eel looked appetizing and the portion was generous. Eel really does show its distinctive savory flavor best when grilled over charcoal.

Savory fat rendering off the eel over charcoal

The savory fat rendering off the eel mingled with the charcoal, giving it a flavor that was both light and rich at once.

Eel wrapped with garlic and ginger in a lettuce leaf

It's delicious even eaten plain, but wrapping the eel in a lettuce leaf with garlic and ginger cut the richness and added a fragrant note that I really liked. Maybe because I was hungry going in, but with every bite the eel really did seem to fill up that empty stomach.

Dipping it in the house sauce brought out even more of the eel's flavor — there wasn't really time to reach for the other side dishes. It's the kind of bite that melts in your mouth.

Why Ildeung Chamsutt Jangeo works for a meal with parents

Coming here with my parents today felt like the right call. Eel has long been a go-to nourishing food, one of those dishes that just seems to restore fatigue and energy. For older folks, it's a nutritious meal packed with protein and healthy fats, so I'd recommend bringing them along. If you're looking for a nourishing meal to share with your parents or family, this Gimhae eel spot is one I'd recommend.
