Let's go to Gongdeok this time
Hi, I'm Edwood. In the middle of a repetitive daily grind, dinner with my wife after work is my most precious healing time. On weekdays I usually head to Yongsan about twice a week for work meetings and appointments. My wife, on the other hand, commutes to Gongdeok every day for her job. So when it comes to dinner time, she's the one who usually crosses over to Yongsan out of consideration for me, and we end up eating there together more often than not.
I'm always grateful to my wife for coming all that way, but there's also a corner of my heart that's felt a bit sorry about it. So this time, I decided to go to Gongdeok myself, timed to her end of shift. Since it was a weekday evening, I wanted a meal that would sit easy on the stomach but still be filling, rather than something too heavy or elaborate. Since we'd planned to go home after dinner and enjoy a cold drink while watching our favorite baseball broadcast, I wanted the dinner itself to be light and clean.
So we met near her office and started thinking together about what to eat. We hunted hard for a Korean restaurant that was both easy on the wallet for a weekday evening and high in quality — good value for money.

That's when Horangi Gotgan Gongdeok Branch popped up right on our radar. It's very close to the subway station, so the route was perfect for a weekday evening visit.
Arriving at Horangi Gotgan

Walking along, Horangi Gotgan's unique, stylish sign caught my eye from far away. True to the brand name, the sign featured a tiger character illustration that was really striking and easy to spot from a distance.

Stepping inside, the clean, pleasant interior stood out, and the tidy atmosphere made a great first impression right away.

What's the price range like?
This place mainly specializes in hearty bibimbap dishes and deep, rich bone broth soup. Looking over the menu, most items are priced between ₩10,000 and ₩12,000, which felt genuinely great in these times of high prices. Given the excellent value, I felt sure this would also be a well-known lunch spot in Gongdeok where you could stop by casually from early hours and fill up without worry.

While we were eating, plenty of solo diners were also comfortably enjoying meals by themselves, which told me this is a relaxed spot that anyone, of any age or gender, could comfortably visit.
We pored over the menu, happily agonizing over what to order, and decided to try a range of the restaurant's signature dishes. We went all in and picked three items: a bone broth rice we were curious about for its deep broth flavor, a beef brisket bibimbap with a mix of spicy, tangy and savory notes, and a nurungji (crispy scorched rice) sweet and sour pork to share as a side. Even after ordering so generously, the total came to just ₩30,000, and I couldn't help but marvel at the value while placing the order.

Horangi Gotgan's food: incredible value
After ordering, we chatted about this and that, and before long, neatly plated dishes were served one after another. The first thing we saw, the beef brisket bibimbap, was visually stunning.

Beef brisket bibimbap with complimentary bone broth
It was generously topped with fresh vegetables and beef brisket full of smoky char flavor. What I especially loved was that this bibimbap comes with a warm, rich bone broth as a free side when you order it. Taking a bite of the spicy bibimbap and following it with a sip of the mild bone broth created a combination that was indescribably good.

Bone broth rice: half broth, half meat
Next came the bone broth rice, served in a large bowl brimming with a milky, deep broth. When I gently lifted the surface with a spoon, I found it packed full of clean, tender beef brisket.

Calling it half broth, half meat wasn't an exaggeration — it was a touching sight that spoke to the owner's generosity. The broth wasn't overpowering and had a deep, rich flavor, so mixing rice into it with a piece of kimchi felt like it washed away a whole day's fatigue. It was, without question, one of the best Gongdeok Station Korean restaurant dishes for filling you up warmly and satisfyingly.

What does the nurungji sweet and sour pork taste like?
The last dish to arrive, the nurungji sweet and sour pork, was a real treat. Underneath the sweet and tangy sweet and sour sauce was crispy fried nurungji (crunchy scorched rice), and the combination was really impressive.

Even with the sauce poured on, the meat's natural crispiness and the nurungji's crunchy texture held up all the way through, making it fun to chew. It was an excellent side dish alongside the main course.

With its careful flavors and deep taste that I feel I could eat every day without getting tired of, I'm confidently adding this to my list of Gongdeok lunch spots and expect to come back often.

If you're looking for a proper, tidy Gongdeok Station Korean restaurant spread near Gongdeok, don't overthink it — I highly recommend paying a visit.

After a satisfying meal, we walked home lightly, watched baseball together, enjoyed a happy nightcap, and wrapped up a happy weekday.
