Jamsil lunch for two: bone soup and samgyetang sets at Boseung Hoegwan

In short

Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch is a 24-hour Korean soup restaurant on Ogeum-ro, right next to Jamsil Station in Songpa, Seoul. Ordering the bone hangover soup set (₩17,000) and the samgyetang set (₩19,000) for two brought pork jowl boiled meat, three kinds of sundae, a whole chicken samgyetang, and a bone soup packed with meat. Portions ran about 1.5 servings' worth, making it great value.

I was craving something spicy and filling for once, so while looking for a good spot I ended up at Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch, a Jamsil Station lunch spot. I seem to have caught a disease where I can't eat a single meal carelessly... I like eating properly no matter what I'm having! Boseung Hoegwan is famous enough that I'd heard of it a lot, but this was my first visit.

Being right next to Jamsil Station makes it super accessible. Parking was also available out front.

Even though I visited at an oddly off-peak time past the usual meal hours, there were quite a few customers still eating. Since there were guests around I couldn't take detailed interior shots, but overall it felt very clean and pleasant. The tables were also spaced out roomily, creating an atmosphere where you could focus comfortably on your meal. The staff were super kind too.

Menu lineup and set-meal ordering conditions

Sitting down and looking at the menu, there was quite a variety of gukbap (soup with rice) dishes — sundae gukbap, boiled meat gukbap, pork jowl gukbap, offal gukbap, hangover ramyeon, and more. Beyond the individual dishes, there was also a well-rounded set-meal menu and a solo special menu. The set meals are only available from two people and up, and come as a package with pork jowl boiled meat and sundae (Korean blood sausage).

Given the composition of the menu, the prices overall felt quite reasonable. Since we wanted to try a variety of things, we went with a combination of the bone hangover soup set and the samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) set.

The solo special also seems perfect for eating alone but still wanting something hearty.

There's also a variety of drinking-menu dishes. Sundae-gopchang hotpot, bone-and-potato stew, stir-fried sundae-gopchang, and more... Since it's open 24 hours, there are plenty of dishes that pair well with a drink, making it look like a good spot for daytime drinking too.

There's also a good range of alcohol and drinks. Even the drinks come in bold 500ml bottles...

Basic side dishes of diced radish kimchi and napa cabbage kimchi

Passing the first test: the basic kimchi

Once we ordered, the basic side dishes came out first — diced radish kimchi and napa cabbage kimchi. At a place like this, tasting the kimchi first is basically the rule. If the kimchi is good, it's a real find, and even the basic kimchi here was quite delicious. The napa cabbage kimchi especially was pleasantly sweet and crunchy, pairing wonderfully with the soup.

A dipping sauce also came out.

When the dishes came out, they were so much more generous than expected that I was a bit startled.

Two generously served set meals on the table

The pork jowl boiled meat and sundae included in the set

Pork jowl boiled meat and sundae! Included in the set menu! It kept simmering away on a burner in the middle, so I liked that I could enjoy it warm all the way through the meal.

The sundae was hearty inside with a rich, savory flavor, and the pork jowl boiled meat was very tender with no gamey smell at all. There were as many as three kinds of sundae, and the portion was so generous that it never seemed to shrink no matter how much we ate.

The pork jowl paired beautifully with the fragrant chives served alongside.

The fragrance of the chives went really well with the meat. And this alone was already a full serving! With the soup coming too, I nearly burst.

Samgyetang set ₩19,000, a whole chicken

It didn't quite come across in the photos, but the earthenware bowl seemed about twice the size of a regular one. A whole, not-small chicken sat in there, and just the sight of it felt restorative.

A whole chicken in a large earthenware bowl of samgyetang

The chicken meat was cooked so tender that it went down smoothly with no dryness at all. The broth wasn't harsh or salty either — it was clean yet deep, with a rich chicken-stock flavor. The quality was impressive, and it really felt like eating a healthy, deeply nourishing meal.

Bone hangover soup set ₩17,000, at least 1.5 servings

A generous bowl of bone hangover soup

Next came the main dish I'd ordered, the bone hangover soup. This one also arrived in an amount so massive it was startling. Comparing it to the rice bowl next to it might help give a sense of scale — either way, it was at least 1.5 servings' worth.

It had been a while since I'd had bone hangover soup, so I had high expectations, and it really felt like eating a spicy, rich gamjatang (spicy pork bone stew). The broth was fantastically punchy — a little spicy, salty, and savory all at once, and truly delicious. The bones inside were huge, and it wasn't just bone — there was a ton of meat attached.

Large bone with meat still attached

The meat was boiled so tender that the flesh pulled right off with just a touch of the chopsticks, making it easy to eat. The meat kept coming no matter how much we ate, almost overwhelming — perfect for loading up on protein.

With moist meat that pulled apart along its grain, a spoonful of rice on top made me think, yep, Korean food really is the best.

Soft dried radish greens in the bone hangover soup

The dried radish greens were also wonderfully soft. Mixed moistly with rice, it went down effortlessly. If you like bold, punchy flavors like I do, I highly, highly recommend the bone hangover soup!

The portion was genuinely huge, but we cleaned every bit of it.

Final verdict

Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch, a Jamsil Station lunch spot! Everything we ordered was truly delicious — the bone hangover soup with its deep, spicy broth like gamjatang and generous chunks of meaty bone, the samgyetang with a whole chicken in a clean yet rich broth, and the savory, tender pork jowl boiled meat with rich, chewy sundae. Above all, the value for money is excellent... and the portions are really, really huge! The meat was substantial and the quality impressive, so I left very satisfied. If you're looking for a lunch spot near Jamsil Station, I highly recommend it.
