Went back after a while to Choburi Kimchi Jjigae Gojan Main Branch, a restaurant so famous in Gojan-dong that literally everyone around here knows it.

This place has been running for three generations, so if you live in Gojan-dong there's basically no way you haven't heard of it — a true local legend.

Why does Choburi Kimchi Jjigae serve only kimchi jjigae?
Choburi Kimchi Jjigae Gojan Main Branch stubbornly sells nothing but kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) — one menu item, period. Nowadays when you look around, everyone's mixing random menus together or leaning into fusion food, so it's honestly rare to find a place that keeps it this classic and nails a deep, proper kimchi jjigae flavor.
You can really feel the owner's pride and skill in this stew.

Inside the Gojan-dong restaurant: clean, not an old-school diner
When you hear "long-running kimchi jjigae spot," you'd normally picture a slightly run-down, cluttered old-school restaurant, but Choburi Kimchi Jjigae Gojan Main Branch is nothing like that. The building exterior is neat and tidy, and the inside is bright and spacious — pure comfort. It's always so clean that eating there is a pleasure no matter when you visit, which is why I keep coming back.

Unfortunately I always come at dinnertime, so I haven't caught the lunchtime peak, but they do run a special lunch-only event separately.

On top of that, they've got a bunch of solid perks going, like a receipt review event anyone can easily join. If you visit, I'd definitely recommend jumping on all these events and grabbing every perk you can.
What comes in the 39,000 won 3-person set?
Walking in, there's zero need to think it over — the set menu is the automatic order. Just match the set to your headcount and you're set. With prices these days making even a single meal out feel scary, Choburi Kimchi Jjigae's price-to-portion ratio is incredibly kind. For our 3-person set, at a cheap 39,000 won,
Kimchi jjigae + unlimited ramyeon sari + 1 stone-pot rice per person + a drink + perilla oil fried egg
comes as a full course. With value like this, you have to wonder if the owner is even making any money these days.

Korean napa cabbage kimchi and grade-1 Korean pork: how is the broth?
The secret behind why Choburi Kimchi Jjigae is this uniquely delicious ultimately comes down to ingredients. They insist on using only carefully selected, 100% domestic napa cabbage kimchi and chewy grade-1 Korean pork (hanwoo-grade domestic pork).
When the main kimchi jjigae finally hit the burner, the visual alone was overwhelming — thick-cut grade-1 Korean pork and well-fermented sour kimchi piled generously into the pot.

Boiled bubbling on high heat, I took one spoonful of broth, and from the very first sip a deep, heavy umami spread across the whole mouth.

The mildly sour, sharp umami from the well-fermented kimchi and the rich, savory broth from the pork blend in a perfect ratio. No heaviness at all — clean yet spicy and refreshing, so every sip of broth pulls an involuntary sigh of satisfaction. The long-simmered meat gets tender and soft the more you chew, and wrapped in kimchi it's an incredible combo.
Stone-pot gardenia rice and the perilla oil fried egg
The set at Choburi Kimchi Jjigae Gojan Main Branch comes with one stone-pot rice per person, and when you lift the lid, it's not plain white rice — it's a beautiful yellow gardenia rice!

Freshly steamed, still-steaming savory stone-pot rice next to a spicy kimchi jjigae — there's no way that's not delicious.

Plop the fragrant perilla oil fried egg on top of the gardenia rice, mix in the stew broth and meat, and it's pure bliss.

Side dishes, unlimited ramyeon sari and the sungnyung finish
The basic side dishes are also solid: salty stir-fried fish cake, tangy-spicy pickled peppers, and crispy seasoned laver — every single one made with real skill, an absolute rice thief. Even before the stew finished cooking, I was ready to polish off a whole bowl of stone-pot rice with just the sides and the fried egg.
After finishing the stew, we threw in the unlimited ramyeon sari and slurped it down, then finished it off with the warm sungnyung (scorched rice tea) that had been poured into the pot from the start — it warms you up and leaves you seriously full.

Free dessert and the kimchi jjigae meal kit 2+1 deal
Another charm of this place is that dessert service is well set up on your way out. Sweet, cool slushies, ice cream, and coffee to cleanse the palate are all available to choose from.

And looking over at the counter, they were also selling kimchi jjigae meal kits separately — and running a buy-2-get-1 deal! Taking home a pack of the stew with three generations of the owner's skill packed in, and just heating it up, means you can pull off a great meal at home too, so grabbing one is a great idea.

If you want to taste a classic, truly authentic kimchi jjigae, I strongly recommend a visit to Choburi Kimchi Jjigae Gojan Main Branch in Gojan-dong — generous portions, kind prices, and everything in between.
