Seoul Square Japanese restaurant with kids' tableware: Furato Shokudo

In short

Furato Shokudo Seoul Square Direct Store is a Japanese restaurant on basement level 1 of Seoul Square, right in front of Seoul Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Visiting with a child, the writer ordered one gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet), omurice and a plate of karaage with two shrimp tempura, and the staff brought a child-sized spoon, fork and small sharing plate without being asked. Between gyukatsu grilled over a small tabletop burner, crisp fried sides and quick service, Furato Shokudo was an easy pick for a meal with kids.

I went to Furato Shokudo, in the basement dining hall of Seoul Square in front of Seoul Station. Some readers might know the building better as the old Daewoo Building.

This time I visited with my child. The food was tasty and the portions generous, but what really stuck with me was how fast and friendly the staff were even while busy.

What is Furato Shokudo Seoul Square like inside?

The place had a lot of customers and quite a few tables. When I arrived there were already plenty of people eating. Inside, there were quite a lot of tables, and the bright wood-toned interior with wall art made for a comfortable atmosphere.

There were several staff members on the floor, and they moved quickly serving and clearing tables. Even though it was busy with customers, the service stayed friendly, which I liked.

Kids' spoon, fork and sharing plate brought to the table

At Furato Shokudo, they brought out a separate spoon, fork, and small plate for my child. When dining out with a kid, these little details matter as much as the food itself. It made it easy to portion out the food, and left me with the impression that this is a decent place to eat with a child.

What we ordered: gyukatsu, omurice and fried sides

We ordered a set with one gyukatsu (grilled beef cutlet), omurice, and karaage plus two shrimp tempura together. I don't remember the exact name of the fried dish, but it was a combo letting you have both at once.

I picked it thinking of sharing with my child, and I was happy I could taste a few different things and that the overall portions were generous.

The omurice came out with fluffy yellow egg mounded on top on a white plate. Salad, soup, and sauce came alongside it.

I also took a photo after cutting the egg open. The soft egg inside spread out over the rice, looking quite different from how it first arrived. Having a rice dish alongside the gyukatsu and fried items made it easy to share.

How to grill gyukatsu on the tabletop burner

Furato Shokudo's gyukatsu comes coated in breading, with the red meat visible at the cut cross-section. The plate also came with cabbage salad and wasabi.

There were instructions for how to eat it right on the table, which was handy to reference. You place the meat on the heated grill plate, cook it on both sides, then eat it with salt or sauce.

Being able to place it on the small burner and cook it further to your liking was part of the fun of gyukatsu. Grilling it piece by piece meant I could enjoy it warm throughout the meal.

This is the dish with two long shrimp tempura pieces and karaage together. You can see the crisp texture of the batter in the photos too.

Eating it in person, the crispy texture was great, and my kid ate it well, so I was glad I ordered it. I picked it as a side dish, but the portion was more generous than I expected.

With omurice, gyukatsu, and fried items all together, it was fun to pick and choose, and it made for a hearty meal.

Seoul Square parking validation hours

Here's the Seoul Square parking support schedule I was told about at the time of my visit.

  • Before 6pm: 1 hour of support
  • After 6pm: 2 hours of support

Worth noting if you're driving in. Please check with the restaurant staff during your meal for the exact time criteria and how to register your parking.

Is Furato Shokudo worth it with a child?

What I especially liked about this visit was the crispy fried food, generous portions, and friendly staff. Even with a lot of customers, service was quick, and they set aside separate tableware for my child, which made the meal easy and comfortable.

If you're looking for somewhere to eat with a child near Seoul Station, Furato Shokudo — where you can share gyukatsu with omurice and fried sides — was a decent choice.
