What kind of place is Nampo in Gyodong, Daegu?

Nampo is a grilled shellfish and seafood pub at 238 Gyeongsanggamyeong-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu. I've been on the hunt for good restaurants lately for wedding invitation dinners as I prepare for my own wedding. This time, my friends and I were looking for a place to enjoy delicious seafood with a drink, and we ended up at Nampo.

Nampo is run so that even in inland Daegu, you can enjoy the spirit of the southern sea and fresh seafood. Since I visited for a wedding invitation gathering, I was curious whether it would work well for a group. So here's my honest review of how this Daegu grilled shellfish spot actually was :)

Outside and inside Nampo

Walking along Gyeongsanggamyeong-gil, you'll spot Nampo. Since it's mainly a seafood and grilled shellfish spot, it had a bit of a pocha (street tent bar) feel rather than a typical restaurant. It seemed like a good place for a group hangout with friends or a date with a meal-plus-drinks vibe.

Inside, the atmosphere overall felt comfortable for eating and drinking. Since it's a grilled shellfish restaurant with tabletop grilling, it seemed like a great spot to chat with friends over a slow meal. At Nampo, staff explain how the tabletop grilling works and help with the prep. That made it easy even for people trying grilled shellfish for the first time.

The Nampo menu and what we ordered

Nampo sells a variety of seasonal ingredients and fresh shellfish and seafood. In particular, I got the sense that they care about freshness since shellfish and seafood are said to come in every morning. We ordered a total of four menu items that day.

  • 🦐 Raw shrimp sashimi ₩55,000

  • 🥔 Donggeuri cream potato dumplings ₩9,000

Free knife-cut noodles and pork cutlet

When we ordered the grilled shellfish, knife-cut noodles (kalguksu) and pork cutlet (donkkaseu) came out as included sides. Noodles at a shellfish place, sure, but I was a bit surprised pork cutlet came too. Thanks to that, we had something simple to eat while waiting for the main dishes. (Honestly, when you're hungry, it's genuinely delicious.)

Raw shrimp sashimi, 55,000 won — served live

The first dish to arrive was raw shrimp sashimi. Nampo uses raw shrimp delivered that same day. Most notably, the shrimp came out genuinely alive, which made the freshness even more obvious.

Seeing the shrimp move on the plate was a little startling at first, but it also made clear just how fresh the ingredients were. Eating it, the texture was springy and alive, and the more I chewed, the more that distinct sweetness of raw shrimp came through. Seafood lovers would probably be very satisfied with this.

The signature grilled shellfish 2-3, 59,000 won

The main dish of the visit was, of course, the grilled shellfish 2-3. As one of Nampo's signature menu items, it looked quite substantial just from the visuals. And of course, grilling shellfish yourself is half the fun. The staff explained the grilling method and helped with prep, so the whole process was easy even for us.

Since the shellfish take a while to cook, it was a nice stretch to chat with friends or sip a drink while waiting. The ocean scent rising as the shellfish cooked was great, and eating them warm right off the grill really brought out the appeal of grilled shellfish. Out of everything we ate that day, the grilled shellfish 2-3 felt like the most 'Nampo' dish.

How we grilled and ate the shellfish

Eating the well-cooked shellfish one by one, my hand naturally kept reaching for it as a drinking snack. That made me feel like Nampo works less as a plain restaurant and more as a proper Gyodong pub. It's great for a group of friends sharing shellfish around the table, and it also seemed like a solid spot for a seafood date with a partner.

Hot-pot fish roe rice, 6,000 won

After all that seafood, I wanted to order a rice dish too, so we added the hot pot fish roe rice. It comes out sizzling in a stone pot, which looked warm and appetizing just to see.

The popping texture of the flying fish roe was especially fun. After nonstop shellfish and raw shrimp, mixing in this rice dish in the middle worked really well as an actual meal. It's a good option for anyone who's been drinking-snack heavy and wants to finish with some rice.

Donggeuri cream potato dumplings, 9,000 won

We also ordered something a little different: the Donggeuri cream potato dumplings (ongsimi). At first, cream ongsimi at a grilled shellfish place seemed like an odd pairing, but once we tried it, the combination of cream sauce and potato dumplings worked better than expected.

The chewy dumplings paired with the smooth cream sauce gave a completely different vibe from the rest of the meal. After all those ocean-scented dishes like the grilled shellfish, adding something creamy in the middle made the whole lineup feel more varied. Personally, I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to try something different alongside grilled shellfish.
