Daegu Korean restaurant with minari and bossam: Uldong Bossam

In short

Uldong Bossam (울동보쌈) is a Korean restaurant near Daegu City Hall’s Dongin annex in Jung-gu, Daegu. I ordered medium bossam and minari jeon, and liked the tender pork with minari and freshly ground sesame soy sauce. Solo diners can use the bar seating or order the ₩10,900 bossam set for one.

I visited Uldong Bossam (울동보쌈) in Daegu’s Gyo-dong to eat bossam (boiled pork wraps). This time, I ordered medium bossam and minari jeon (water parsley pancake). I remember the combination of pork with minari, along with making a sauce by grinding sesame seeds at the table.

Is it suitable for eating bossam alone?

The restaurant felt cleaner and more orderly than I expected. I thought it would also be fine for a date or a meal with friends.

There was also bar seating that worked well for solo diners. The bossam set can be ordered for one and costs ₩10,900. I ate the medium bossam this time, but I liked that there is also an option for coming alone and having bossam.

What did I order?

We ordered medium bossam and minari jeon. Besides bossam, the menu also had potato jeon and suyuk hot pot, so it looked suitable for coming in the evening with a drink.

How do you use the small mortar at the table?

You grind sesame seeds in the small mortar at the table, then add soy sauce to make a sauce for the bossam. I was curious about its purpose at first, but making it myself was simple.

Dipping the boiled pork in the finished sesame soy sauce gave it a nutty, salty flavor. It was a good sauce to serve with bossam.

What tasted best with the bossam?

After a short wait, the full spread was set on the table, and I was satisfied because it had more variety than expected. I especially noticed that minari came with the bossam.

Wrapping the boiled pork in minari worked well because the aromas complemented each other. The minari reduced the richness of the pork, so I kept reaching for it.

The sesame soy sauce was good too, but my favorite combination was the pork with minari, dried radish strips, and salted shrimp. The pork was tender rather than tough, and I noticed almost no unpleasant smell.

The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) served alongside was spicy and savory. It was good with rice midway through the bossam meal.

Was the minari jeon worth ordering too?

The minari jeon was browned on the outside and nutty inside, so it went well with the bossam. If bossam alone felt a little insufficient, I thought adding one pancake to share would work well.

What kind of meal is it suited to?

Overall, I liked that the food was cleanly presented without being overly strong in flavor. It seemed suitable for sharing bossam and jeon with a group, while the solo bossam set and bar seating also made it a good option for eating alone.

I felt it would work as a meal at lunchtime and as a place to have a drink with bossam in the evening. Next time, I would like to try the suyuk hot pot that was on the menu.
