Traveling around Jeju, sometimes you want seafood and also something distinctly Jeju-Korean at the same time. This time I was driving along Hamdeok Coastal Road and stopped by a place perfect for a hearty meal right in front of the sea — Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap 🐟
Hamdeok Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap
Where is Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap, and when is it open?
Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap is a Jocheon restaurant and a Hamdeok Beach restaurant located at 418 Johamhaean-ro, Jocheon-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju. It's open daily 09:00–21:00, closed every Tuesday, and has free parking.

It's a great spot to stop along Hamdeok Coastal Road, so even before going in to eat, I already felt like I was really in Jeju. Looking toward the water, several small fishing boats were floating around, and when I looked closely at the shoreline I spotted a baby cuttlefish and watched it for a bit 🦑

There's parking right in front of the restaurant, so it was convenient to visit by car too. Above all, since it's a new building, the exterior looked well-kept and clean, and the surroundings looked tidy overall, which made a good first impression.

A wide hall and self-serve bar for travelers carrying luggage
Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap was quite spacious inside once I stepped in, more so than it looked from outside. The tables are on the larger side and the spacing between them is wide, so I never felt too close to the next table. When traveling Jeju, sometimes you bring a suitcase or luggage into a restaurant, and with this much room, that wasn't a problem at all.

And what I personally liked most was the self-serve bar 👀 There isn't just a fixed set of basic side dishes — more side dishes are set up at the self-serve bar so you can grab whatever you want. If you're like me and love having lots of different sides with your Korean meal, definitely check out the self-serve bar 🥗

Ordering mackerel ssambap for two at 36,000 won
Mackerel ssambap (2 people), ₩36,000

There were several menu items that are popular go-to meals in Jeju, so if you visit with a group, it seems fine to each pick according to taste. That day we didn't hesitate over other options and ordered the mackerel ssambap for two straight away. We both love braised mackerel and were craving a Korean meal to eat with rice, so we picked it — and after a short wait, the table started filling up!!!

I especially love salty, savory side dishes, so things like stir-fried anchovies or soy-marinated crab went really well with rice. Among them, a side dish that looked like siraegi (dried radish greens) surprisingly suited my taste too.

How did the mackerel braised with aged kimchi taste?
And finally the main dish, mackerel and aged kimchi stew, arrived. The pot was generously filled with mackerel and aged kimchi, with radish laid underneath. In particular, the aged kimchi looked so large it seemed like almost a whole head went in, which caught my eye right away 🌟

You could taste the deep flavor drawn out from the aged kimchi itself, and the seasoning blended so well with the mackerel that I kept wanting more rice. I really understood why people call this kind of dish a "rice thief." 🍚 When I eat braised mackerel, I actually like the seasoning, radish, and kimchi mixed into rice even more than the fish itself sometimes, and here all three were great together.

The mackerel also had more meat on it than I expected, which was great. When I picked at it with chopsticks, the flesh came away tender, and eaten together with the aged kimchi, the mackerel's clean flavor and the deep, rich seasoning matched really well. Sometimes with braised mackerel you end up eating mostly the kimchi or radish because the fish portion feels lacking, but here the mackerel was so generous that it never felt insufficient for two people. The radish in particular had soaked up the seasoning and cooked to a soft texture — put a piece of radish on rice with a bit of broth and that's amazing too 👍

Wrapping mackerel, rice, aged kimchi, and radish in lettuce leaves felt like the proper way to enjoy mackerel ssambap, and the clean, mild lettuce balanced out the rich seasoning nicely, so I could keep enjoying it until the very end.
