Jeju Gujwa-eup restaurant: 3 à la carte dishes for two, Pyeongdae Alhi

In short

Pyeongdae Alhi (평대앓이) is a one-chef Western restaurant on Bijarim-ro in Pyeongdae-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju. Before catching the boat to Udo, two of us skipped the set menus and ordered three à la carte dishes — sous-vide Jeju black pork tenderloin steak, Hallasan pasta and Alhi rice bowl — and not one of them missed. Choose the dishes in advance when booking on Naver and the chef times everything to your arrival, so the whole table lands at once: book ahead rather than walking in.

Today I found a seriously good spot on the east side of Jeju before heading to Udo, so here's the review 😳 We ordered three dishes between the two of us and not one of them missed — this is my review of Pyeongdae Alhi Gujwa Pyeongdae-ri!

Finding Pyeongdae Alhi: exterior and parking in Gujwa-eup

The exterior of Pyeongdae Alhi! There's a parking lot right in front of the restaurant, so it was easy to visit.

Check the hours and notices above! The operating hours are split into brunch, lunch, and dinner.

Right as you walk in, there's a menu board. It's not just dishes — there are helpful descriptions too, which makes choosing easier haha. They also have a good variety of set menus!

What we ordered 🍽️

  • Sous-vide Jeju black pork tenderloin steak
  • Hallasan pasta
  • Alhi rice bowl

Since we wanted to try a bit of everything, we skipped the set menus and ordered three à la carte dishes instead! When you reserve through Naver, you choose your menu in advance, and they prep the food to be ready right on time — I thought that was such a nice touch! If you're planning to visit, I'd definitely recommend reserving ahead 🙌🏻

Inside Pyeongdae Alhi: pay first, then take your seat

The space was decorated in a cute, detailed way haha — nice to look around while waiting a bit!

There were chairs for waiting, and a restroom just in front of them! I also liked that it was separated into men's and women's.

In the central space, the signature menu and house rules were written out big once again. Since it's a one-chef restaurant, only up to 4 people per team can enter, you pay before entering, and none of the dishes can be packed to go!

Interestingly, the table area was separated, and just as the signs said, you could only enter after paying. Once you pay, you open the door and sit wherever you like!

Walking in, a somewhat fairy-tale-like, mysterious space unfolds. Eating by the window seats looking outside would've been so nice too!! We ordered a lot of dishes, so we just went for the big table haha.

Water is self-serve.

Tucked in the corners were signs about the Wi-Fi and a review event giving out puffed rice ice cream. Sounds perfect for dessert!

Bread first, then the whole table at once

Each seat already had its own small plate and cutlery set up!

First came the pre-meal bread haha. Dipping the soft, warm bread in oil totally woke up my appetite and made me want to dive into the main dishes right away 🤤

And then all the dishes came out at once!! Since we'd reserved ahead, everything came out fast and together — loved that 👏🏻

Sous-vide Jeju black pork tenderloin steak

Plate of sous-vide Jeju black pork tenderloin steak

This is the sous-vide Jeju black pork tenderloin steak — you eat it by topping the sous-vide-cooked black pork tenderloin with grilled vegetables, avocado, and salted pollock roe.

Because the meat was sous-vide, it wasn't dry or tough at all, and it went so well with the soft avocado and vegetables ♡

Grilled vegetables and avocado served alongside the steak

There were plenty of vegetables to pair it with too — onion, mushroom, asparagus, sweet pumpkin, and more!! My favorite combo was sweet pumpkin + onion + meat + avocado ♥

Hallasan pasta topped with pattern shrimp

Hallasan pasta

Next up, Hallasan pasta! It's piled generously with cooked pattern shrimp and whole shrimp, and the rich sauce had a slight kick of spice that made it even more delicious!

Generous noodles topped with flying fish roe

The noodles were super generous too. And there was flying fish roe on top!

Plate of pasta topped with cleaned pattern shrimp

The pattern shrimp came already cleaned, which made them easy to pick apart and eat.

Piling it on and eating it like this — so good!

Alhi rice bowl

This one is the Alhi rice bowl!!

Seeing the color of the pattern shrimp had me drooling for real 🥹

Instructions for how to eat the Alhi rice bowl

For the Alhi rice bowl, they also showed us a separate way to eat it.

Pattern shrimp meat pulled out of its shell

The shrimp meat really popped right out, which was fun lol. They'd cut it into nice bite-sized pieces to make it easy to pull apart and eat!

Following their suggestion of rice + vegetables + pattern shrimp + avocado + salted pollock roe together — so good..! Honestly I was on the fence about ordering the Alhi rice bowl because I thought the portion would be too much, but I'm so glad we did. The pattern shrimp itself was sweet and delicious, and the rice had a light seasoning too — even just rice + avocado + roe was tasty on its own... it was just, all around, delicious 😳

My friend's top pick was the Alhi rice bowl!! Me... I can't choose, everything was good. But if I come back, I'll definitely order the Alhi rice bowl again!! It had this novel feeling I hadn't tasted before haha. So — everything we ate was so delicious, big recommendation for Pyeongdae Alhi, and that's the end of this well-fed review!
