Seolleung dinner for two: squid feast set with fried squid, Haetan

In short

Haetan Seolleung Branch is a squid-focused Korean restaurant on the 2nd floor near Exit 2 of Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Visiting for dinner with a friend, the writer ordered the Haetan Han-sang (squid feast set, ₩65,000) with two extra bowls of rice, sharing stir-fried squid, flower pork belly boiled pork, spicy squid salad, and fried squid all in one spread. The portions filled the table for two, and the spacious dining room makes it a solid pick for group dinners or work gatherings near Seolleung.

If you're looking for a hearty spread near Seolleung Station, this is a place where you can try several squid dishes alongside boiled pork all at once.

Haetan Han-sang, the signature dish at Haetan Seolleung Branch

I went to Haetan Seolleung Branch for dinner with a friend. Their signature dish is the Haetan Han-sang, a set that lets you try stir-fried squid and boiled pork together. The menu is varied and the restaurant is spacious, so it also looked like a good spot for a work dinner or group gathering in Seolleung.

Spacious restaurant interior with many tables

Atmosphere and seating

Inside, the restaurant was bigger than expected, with plenty of tables. There were also seats set up for larger groups, so it looked good for office workers nearby to visit as a group. The atmosphere works well both for a regular dinner and for a Seolleung work dinner or group gathering.

Basic side dishes including kimchi, radish, and macaroni salad

Side dishes, self-bar, and free rice refill hours

The basic side dishes were kimchi, radish, macaroni salad, wrap vegetables, garlic, and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste).

You can freely help yourself to more side dishes from the self-bar. There was plenty of lettuce and perilla leaves too, so it was easy to add more while eating the boiled pork.

Free rice refills are only available during lunch, from 11am to 2pm. Since we visited in the evening, we ordered two extra bowls of rice separately. With the Haetan Han-sang at ₩65,000 plus ₩2,000 for two bowls of rice, the total came to ₩67,000.

Savory sungnyung served before the meal
A bowl of sungnyung with plenty of rice grains

Before the food arrived, we had a spoonful of savory sungnyung (scorched rice tea) first. It was warm and mild, good for gently warming up the stomach, and had plenty of rice grains in it. It also went well alongside the spicy dishes.

What's in the ₩65,000 Haetan Han-sang

The Haetan Han-sang we ordered came with stir-fried squid for two, a small flower pork belly boiled pork, spicy squid salad, and half a fried squid. As each dish was set down, the table filled up fast. It was a satisfying spread, letting us try squid prepared several different ways alongside the boiled pork.

Spicy squid salad and white kimchi

The spicy squid salad had plenty of crunchy vegetables. The tangy-spicy seasoning livened up the appetite, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds added extra flavor. It was tasty on its own, but the combination was especially good eaten with the boiled pork or wrap vegetables. The white kimchi served alongside was cool and clean. After eating the spicy squid salad and stir-fried squid, a bite of white kimchi refreshed the palate.

Flower pork belly boiled pork

The flower pork belly boiled pork came thickly sliced and arranged in a circle with sauce in the center. It could be warmed up right at the table, so it stayed warm throughout the meal.

The ratio of lean meat to fat was just right, and it wasn't tough, so it was easy to eat.

Eaten alone, the meat was mild and savory, and layering boiled pork, white kimchi, and spicy squid salad on a perilla leaf let you enjoy several flavors and textures at once. Being able to eat boiled pork alongside squid dishes was the strength of this Seolleung restaurant.

Fried squid served long and in big pieces

Half a serving of fried squid

The fried squid first arrived long and in big pieces, then we cut it into bite-sized pieces to eat.

Biting in, the crispy batter gave way to plump squid. The squid wasn't chewy and the batter wasn't too thick, so it was easy to keep reaching for more. It was good dipped lightly in soy sauce, and also worked well eaten between bites of the spicy stir-fried squid. The portion was generous enough to share with a friend.

Griddle-fried squid stir-fry

The stir-fried squid arrived on a hot griddle. The moment it hit the table, the sizzling sound and spicy aroma spread, and rice instantly came to mind.

Spicy stir-fried squid served on a griddle

It was loaded with large pieces of squid and vegetables like cabbage, onion, and green onion, with plenty of sauce.

The squid wasn't chewy and had a nice bite, well coated with the rich sauce. The vegetables were evenly seasoned too, so it was good to pick up together with the squid. If you like spicy griddle stir-fries, this dish would suit you well as a Seolleung restaurant pick.

Stir-fried squid eaten with a bowl of rice

The stir-fried squid's sauce was rich, so it was a good call to add two extra bowls of rice. Piling the big squid pieces and vegetables on top of the rice, we finished a bowl quickly even without other side dishes.

How much food is this for two people?

We wrapped the flower pork belly boiled pork with perilla leaves, white kimchi, and spicy squid salad, and ate the stir-fried squid with rice, so each dish offered a different combination to enjoy. With two of us visiting, the portions were generous enough to fill the whole table.

After finishing the meal, we also had some ice cream set up near the entrance. Ending with cool, sweet ice cream after the spicy stir-fried squid was a great finish.

Haetan Seolleung Branch isn't a place with just one stir-fried squid dish — it's a spot where you can enjoy spicy squid salad, fried squid, and flower pork belly boiled pork all in one spread. Each dish is good on its own, and the combination of boiled pork, spicy squid salad, and white kimchi together also worked well. Close to the station with a spacious interior, it's a good option for a dinner with a friend as well as for planning a Seolleung group gathering or work dinner. If you're looking for a Seolleung Station restaurant where you can share a generous variety of dishes, the Haetan Han-sang is worth checking out.
