I went to Huiyeol Seocho Gyodae Branch for lunch with a friend. It's a Korean restaurant between Gyodae Station and Seocho Station, where you can eat everything from hanwoo (Korean beef) and short rib set menus to pot rice.

That day we ordered two marinated short rib sets and added an extra à la carte portion of marinated short rib on top, so we ended up eating quite a hearty meal.

Table full of banchan side dishes

First, the table filled up with banchan (side dishes).

There was a wide variety, from bean sprouts and kimchi to namul (seasoned vegetables) and salad, and I especially kept reaching for the sweet pumpkin salad topped with nuts — it was soft and sweet.

By the time we finished the porridge that came out before the meal, the main dishes — marinated short rib, pot rice, and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) — arrived one after another.

How does the pre-grilled marinated short rib taste?

Huiyeol Seocho Gyodae Branch's marinated short rib came out on a hot iron plate already grilled to a perfect eating state, so we didn't have to grill it ourselves.

Onions and vegetables were laid under the plate, and the meat arrived still sizzling, so the smell was great the moment it landed on the table.

The marinade wasn't overly sweet or salty — it was just the right level to pair with rice — and the meat was on the thicker side, so there was a satisfying chew to it.

I picked up a piece and put it straight on the pot rice, and of course, meat with rice never fails. The marinade seeped slightly into the rice and paired well, and after eating just meat for a while, adding banchan or salad made it feel clean and refreshing again.

Pot rice, doenjang jjigae and nurungji to finish the set

Personally, what I liked most about the set was the pot rice.

When you open the lid, warm rice topped with lotus root and chestnuts appears, and I scooped out the rice first to eat.

It felt like a properly complete meal rather than just plain white rice, and it went really well with the marinated short rib.

Doenjang jjigae with tofu and zucchini

The doenjang jjigae that came with it had tofu, zucchini, and mushrooms in it. It was nice to alternate — a bite of meat, a hot spoonful of soup, then back to rice.

Nurungji made by pouring water into the pot

After the rice was scooped out, water was poured into the pot and left to make nurungji (scorched rice) at the end. Going from meat to pot rice to doenjang jjigae to nurungji, I ended up much fuller than expected.

Adding a 180g a la carte portion of marinated short rib

The meat in the set was so good that we added one more portion of marinated short rib.

Extra order of 180g marinated short rib

The extra meat also came out on a separate hot iron plate with vegetables, and since it was already grilled, it was convenient not having to wait to eat.

With two sets plus an extra portion of marinated short rib for the two of us, this amount worked out well for us since we wanted to eat plenty of meat.

After the meal, we finished cleanly with omija tea (schisandra berry tea).

On the way out, there was also puffed corn snack (gangnyeongi) ready for us.

Is Huiyeol Seocho Gyodae Branch worth it? Final verdict

Huiyeol Seocho Gyodae Branch felt less like a plain grilled meat restaurant and more like a Gyodae Station-style Korean set-course meal, with banchan, pot rice, and stew all served together as a full table.

Since you don't have to grill the meat yourself and there are private rooms available, it seemed like a comfortable choice for a meal with parents or a gathering with several people. If you're looking for Gyodae Station lunch where you can enjoy meat and pot rice together near the station, the marinated short rib set was a solid choice.
