Long-time neighbors of my blog know this already — I'm a bread girl and a full-on dessert nerd. I'm especially serious about cake, so I'll travel across town for a place with a good reputation. This time I didn't even have to go far.
I had errands near Express Bus Terminal Station in Seoul, close to home, so I stopped by Sweet Park at Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam and finally visited Chef Cho, which I'd been curious about for a while. The mountains of fruit piled on top of each cake grabbed my attention instantly. I originally meant to buy just one, but ended up picking five cut cakes to take home — and oh, it was even more satisfying than expected, so let me share!
Where is Chef Cho in Shinsegae Gangnam?
Chef Cho sits in Sweet Park, basement level 1 of Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam. It connects directly to Express Bus Terminal Station on lines 3, 7, and 9, so getting there by public transit was easy — from the food hall, head toward the Honam Line terminal, and when you spot the escalator, go left.

Sweet Park itself is dessert heaven, so there's plenty to look at. But the display in front of this shop especially caught my eye with all that fresh fruit piled high. While I was staring at the showcase, someone next to me said, "The other places look pretty too, but this one actually tastes good," which only raised my expectations even more, haha.

The store signage mentioned that Chef Cho once appeared as one of the "Four Kings" on SBS TV's Master in the House, and has been making cakes for a long time. They emphasize 100% dairy cream and freshness, and eating it, the style really did feel soft and clean rather than heavy or greasy.
Chef Cho cake sizes and how the five slices were chosen
The showcase had No. 1 whole cakes alongside a mini size, which looked good for 3–4 people eating casually. The fruit inside the case also looked great — good color, and generously piled on.

The first one that caught my eye was the peach berry, loaded with peaches between the strawberries — tempting just to look at. The mango rose, arranged like a flower, seemed perfect as a birthday or housewarming gift. After a lot of deliberation, I told myself, "Okay, today let's try several flavors," and pivoted to cut slices.

What I picked at this Gangnam favorite were five in total: dark choco forest, pistachio fig, real mango, strawberry cream, and sebit crepe. Looking back at the photos now, I slightly regret not grabbing the matcha, haha.
Tasting all five Chef Cho slice cakes, one by one
1. Pistachio fig
Visually, Chef Cho's pistachio fig was the most luxurious-looking of the five. Seasonal figs sat on top, and the side showed the cross-section as-is, so you could see the layers without even cutting in. The pistachio color plus gold flakes made it even prettier.
Honestly, I don't usually seek pistachio out — but this one, the pistachio did all the work. It had a dense, nutty flavor that was rich without being sweet, and paired beautifully with the fig's gentle sweetness. I scraped up every last bit of leftover cream! Even if you're not usually into pistachio, I'd recommend trying this one.
2. Dark choco forest
Dark choco forest was the winner when my friends and I ate all five and held our own informal vote. At first glance I honestly thought, "probably just a familiar chocolate cake," but the result surprised me.

The sponge was fluffy and melted smoothly on the tongue, and instead of just a strong chocolate flavor, cherries tucked in between added a tangy brightness. The cream seemed to be a blend of two kinds, each with a different character, making it far more layered than expected. If you were expecting an ordinary chocolate cake, this one was surprisingly memorable.
3. Sebit crepe
Sebit crepe is a cake loaded with strawberry, mango, and shine muscat grapes. A single slice is ₩12,000. No matter how carefully I carried it home, it got jostled a bit and the shape was slightly pressed down — but once I tasted it, that didn't matter at all, haha.

Looking at the cross-section, the fruit proportion felt far larger than the cake itself, so the sweetness and freshness came through strongly, making it lighter to eat than expected. At first I thought, "oh, that's a bit pricey," but after eating it, the sheer amount of ingredients made the price make sense.
4. Real mango
Real mango was the staff's recommendation. Tasting it, the distinct rich mango aroma really came through, and the sponge was on the fluffier side.

Big chunks of fresh mango kept it from feeling greasy all the way to the last bite. This would probably be the safest choice if you're eating with kids or gifting to someone who loves fruit cake.
5. Strawberry cream
Strawberry cream is such a familiar cake that it's actually a good way to judge the basics. Sweet Park's Chef Cho version wasn't very sweet and felt strongly fresh.

The tart-sweet strawberries paired well with the light whipped cream, making it an easy style to please most people. If I were picking one for a parent's birthday or a family gathering, this is the one I'd recommend.
Cooler packing and pickup tips at Chef Cho
For about 30 minutes of travel, the ice packs and dry ice from Chef Cho's cut cakes were more than enough, and I was told that for longer trips, extra cooler packaging is available for ₩3,000. With 100% dairy cream, getting it home safely matters as much as buying it in the first place. My commute was about 30 minutes, and they packed the ice packs and dry ice carefully enough that I made it home without issue.
Also, if you still have errands at Shinsegae Department Store or Goto Mall after buying, you don't have to carry the cake around right away — you can leave your name and number after payment and pick it up later. That seems pretty useful if you've got a shopping schedule to keep.
One downside: the cut-cake boxes are designed to hold two slices each, so if you buy just one or an odd number, it can shift around a bit inside. Mine got jostled a little on the way home and one slice ended up pressed down.
The final ranking of Chef Cho's five slice cakes
My friends and I ate all five Chef Cho cut cakes and ranked them. First place went to dark choco forest, second place to pistachio fig.

Both were a little different from the usual flavors, which is probably why they stuck with us more. If it's your first visit, I'd suggest picking these two together. Chef Cho wasn't a place that led with looks alone — the actual eating experience and flavor combinations held up too.

The sweetness wasn't overdone, so even after sharing all five with friends, nobody got sick of it, and the generous fruit portions made it feel satisfying. If you're looking for a Shinsegae Gangnam cake shop or picking out a dessert at Sweet Park for a birthday, housewarming, or parent's birthday, it's worth a look. Next time, I need to try the matcha that kept catching my eye in the showcase!
