Ikseon-dong bakery snack with kids on a history walk: Munhwa Bakery

We came out to Ikseon-dong for a history experience day with the kids. There was so much to see today, and after a lot of walking, the kids started getting hungry. History exploring is a real physical workout too, so we needed to refuel with a snack to keep going. 😄

Right then we spotted Munhwa Bakery, a place I'd been curious about, so we went in with the kids.

Munhwa Bakery is a place you'll often see people lined up outside as you walk through Ikseon-dong. When we visited there was signage out front, and the shop itself is so small that it just can't fit many people at once.

It's small enough that only about two parties can be inside at a time, so the vibe is: pick your bread, then head out. Lucky for us, the line wasn't long that day. Waiting a long time isn't easy with kids in tow, so being able to walk right in was great.

What to order at Munhwa Bakery: garlic bread and onion bagel

What we ended up choosing at Munhwa Bakery were the signature garlic bread and onion bagel. The display case had a surprisingly wide variety of breads.

Since we were eating with the kids, after some back and forth we went with Munhwa Bakery's signature garlic bread and onion bagel.

After ordering, they sliced the bread up nicely so it was ready to eat right away.

Having it pre-cut like that made sharing with the kids surprisingly convenient — especially since we planned to eat it outside right away.

The kids couldn't wait, so we ate in the Ikseon-dong alley

We took the bread and were about to head back to our history walk, but the moment the kids saw it...

"Mom, can we eat this right now?"

They couldn't hold out, so we ended up just eating it right there on the street. 😂

Pulling the bread out of the bag and handing pieces around, the kids were so excited. Out for a history walk, stopping at a bakery, then eating bread on the street — little moments like this are honestly the best part of outings with kids.

Even an onion-hating child finished Munhwa Bakery's onion bagel

Munhwa Bakery's onion bagel was, in my opinion, a hit with the kids. Some of my kids usually avoid onions, but they didn't seem bothered by the onion flavor at all and ate it right up.

Maybe it was the nutty flavor, but they didn't seem to notice — or mind — that there was onion in it. Watching kids eat well always makes a mom secretly proud.

Sharing the garlic bread alongside it was plenty to take the edge off their hunger.

Back out to the history walk in Jongno

After eating, the kids seemed to get their energy back and were ready to move again in no time. Today's goal was, after all, a history experience with the kids, not a bakery visit. 😊 Still, it was nice to fuel up on delicious bread and take a short break in the middle. Ikseon-dong has so much to see and so many alleys to explore that walking around with kids always has you on the hunt for a snack, and Munhwa Bakery was a good Ikseon-dong bakery for grabbing something quick and simple to eat.

The shop is too small to sit and linger, but for grabbing a loaf while wandering Ikseon-dong with kids like we did, it worked out just fine.

Best of all, the line wasn't long that day, so we got right in. Bellies full, now back to exploring history — let's go!
